Field of the Invention:
The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for folding a longitudinally moving web and more particularly to a novel web folding apparatus for creating a folded section present on one of the sheets of the moving web towards the open edge of said web.
Background of the Invention
The apparatus for folding a continuous length web moving along a longitudinal fold line find many applications in the printing industry. In the printing industry, it is a common practice to produce one or more longitudinal folds in a travelling web of a paper or like material. One or more successive folds are created in a travelling web in the axial direction of travel between a printing unit and a cutter such that multipage folded products can be made.
In order to fold paper in a moving web, state of the art devices have traditionally relied on "plow folders". Similar in design to farm plows that "turn over" the earth, plow folders remain permanently fixed in the printing press assembly and literally turn the paper around. Plow folders are passive in design and have serious drawbacks. The first disadvantage is the generation of heat. Understandably, paper passing at high speeds through a plow folder generates a large amount of heat as well as wear. In addition, the plow folder places stress on the moving web, thereby increasing web tensions and creating potential stretching or breaking problems. Further, plow folders are not adjustable. Each new size of fold demands a separate folder. Nor does the plow folder design work well with multiple folds or pleats as are required in a gusseted design envelope. Finally, the frictional wear present in a plow folder creates additional web registration problems. Improved plow folders that minimize the wrinkles or gussets are also known.
U.S. Patent No. 4421501 discloses a “Web Folding Apparatus” that constitutes an improved plow folder enabling the highly efficient folding of a continuous length web material without forming wrinkles or gussets and without marking the web. It also facilitates on-going adjustment to accommodate different types of web materials. The plow folding mechanism is such that the plow folder includes a novel fold forming member having its longitudinal axis oriented substantially normal to the direction of the web movement and having a cylindrical outer peripheral surface portion. The fold forming mechanism quickly and readily adjusts so as to cooperate with the entrance and exit rollers to selectively form upwardly or downwardly directed longitudinal folds.
U.S. Patent No. 3401928 pertains to a machine for folding uniform width webs into a stack with each web being folded to have two quarter folds on the top surface and a half width fold on the bottom. Said machine comprises of a series of folding devices each of which overfolds the top quarter width fold and underfolds the bottom half width fold with respect to the intermediate quarter width fold. Various other apparatus are known to fold the webs of facial tissue, paper toweling etc. One such apparatus is disclosed in a U.S. Reissue Patent No. 21785E that discloses a “Napkin Folding Machine”. In the machine of the aforementioned patent, a continuous stack of folded tissue paper is formed on a moving conveyor by successively laying onto a moving conveyor the webs of material which are folded as they are drawn from plurality of parent rolls carried in a multiple spindle backstand. The moving stack of folded webs is severed at appropriate intervals to produce conveniently sized, individual stacks of folded sheets.
U.S. Patent No. 3199861 discloses an apparatus for folding webs of flexible materials and more particularly for producing stacks of interfolded webs of flexible materials such as webs of facial tissue, paper toweling etc. at high production rates. Certain pairs or sets of webs fed to the stack conveyor are preliminarily folded and interfolded away from the immediate vicinity of the stack conveyor. A reduced number of final interfold stations are thus required at the conveyor and these are of improved design capable of handling pairs or sets of preliminarily interfolded webs.
A method and an apparatus for forming printed paper products having a folded or pocket portion, for example, inserts for magazines and brochures having a reply envelope is disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4340212. Here, a longitudinally moving web of paper from which the inserts are made is first folded along the edge to form the folded or envelope portion of the insert. Thereafter, printing is carried out on the folded web. The folding precedes printing in this case, in order to accommodate a web having a width which exceeds the maximum width of the printing press. In this way, an insert having a width up to the maximum width that the printing press can accommodate and/or inserts having envelope portions and/or envelope flap portions of increased size are obtained.
None of the above existing printing machines are utilized to create a folded section on one of the sheets of the longitudinally moving web.
The present invention relates to a novel web folding apparatus for creating a folded section or a bookmark fold on a longitudinally moving web along the fold line. A “folded section” or a “bookmark fold” on a moving web refers to a fold formed by folding the extended part of one of the sheets of the web towards the open edge of the web. The terms “folded section” and “bookmark fold” can be used interchangeably. Such a folded section on the web is created after the printing of the web is completed. Moreover, the web folding apparatus of the present invention employs a new way of adjustment of the longitudinally moving web during its movement along the web path. Thus the web folding apparatus of the present invention assists in folding of the moving web with reduced wrinkling and creasing along the fold line.
The web folding apparatus of the present invention can be easily incorporated in the existing printing press. The purpose of creating the folded section on one of the sheets of the moving web is to create extra space on the folded product, for instance, on one of the sheets of the newspaper thereby drawing the attention of the customers.

Hereinafter, a web folding apparatus (1) for creating a folded section (3a) or a bookmark fold on the moving web will be explained in more details. The same reference numerals are given to the same parts as those of the aforementioned embodiments and their minute explanation have been omitted. The term “bookmark” is referred to the extended part of one of the sheets of the web which is used to create a folded section (3a) or a bookmark fold on the web. The term “folded section” or “bookmark fold” on the web refers to a fold formed by folding the extended part of one of the sheets of the web towards the open edge of the moving web. The terms “folded section” and “bookmark fold” can be used interchangeably.
The term “longitudinally moving web” is alternatively referred to herein as “moving web” or “running web”.
Referring now to the drawings and in particular to Fig 1, the apparatus illustrated provides the web folding apparatus (1) for creating a folded section on the longitudinally moving web (not shown) comprising a stationary angle bar (5) and an edge breaking roller (4) mounted on a shaft (4a) such that the longitudinally moving web (not shown) having a folded section (not shown) on one of the sheets of the web passes onto the edge breaking roller (4). The edge breaking roller (4) defines the folding edge of the folded section and allows the folded section to come over to the front sheet. The adjustment means (5c) is clamped on the roller mounting shaft (4a) that helps in adjusting the folding width of the longitudinally moving web. The angle bar (5) is mounted on a support plate (5b) which is fixed to the adjustment means (5c). The angle bar (5) guides the folded section and allows it to come over to the open edge of the moving web. The air blast system is attached to the angle bar (5) at a suitable position that reduces the friction between the moving sheet and the angle bar. The air blast system comprises of plurality of perforations (5a) through which air can be blown out that helps to reduce the ink deposition on the angle bar thereby ensures the smooth operation of folding in long run.
A two dimensional view of the web folding apparatus (1) is represented by Fig. 2. The angle bar (5) is mounted on the support plate (5b). The adjustment means (not shown) is fixed to the shaft (4a) by means of plurality of fastening means collectively referred to as (5d) and allows the convenient adjustment of the folding width of the folded section (not shown) present on one of the sheets. The angle bar (5) is inclined to the edge breaking roller (4). The angle at which the angle bar is inclined to the edge breaking roller (4) and the horizontal distance of angle bar (5) can be varied. As the angle at which the angle bar is inclined to the edge breaking roller varies, the folding length of the folded section varies in the range of 40-70mm. In a preferred embodiment, the angle bar (5) is inclined at an acute angle 65-70° with respect to the edge breaking roller (4).
Referring to the Fig. 3, an exploded view of the angle bar assembly can be explained. The angle bar (5), the support plate (5b), the edge breaking roller (4), the shaft (4a) and the adjustment means collectively referred as (5c) are entangled into each other by means of plurality of fastening means collectively represented by reference numeral (5d). The angle bar (5) is fixed to the support plate (5b) by means of the fastening means ((5d'''). The support plate, in turn, is fixed to the lower part of the adjustment means (5c'') by the fastening means (5d''). The upper part of the adjustment means (5c') is further fixed to the shaft (4a) by using the fastening means (5d').
Fig.4 shows the perforated slitting (6') and the offset slitting (6'') of the moving web of a suitable length. As the web passes through the slitter, it is cut into unequal halves when present on the lower knife shaft (6b) by shifting the slitter (not shown) at the lead level. In a preferred embodiment, the web is cut away from the center by an offset continuous slitter assembly (6a). In the most preferred embodiment, the web of 1397mm length is cut 40-70mm away from the center by an offset continuous slitter assembly (6a), after the printing is completed. At the same time the perforated slitter assembly (6) forms perforations at the center of the running web. However, other sizes of the web can be cut appropriately using the web folding apparatus (1) of the present invention without undue experimentation.
The perspective view of the web folding apparatus (1) with a moving web is indicated by the Fig.5. The moving web (2) with a bookmark (3) on one of the sheets of the web passes onto the edge breaking roller (4) and thereafter is folded to create a folded section (3a). The angle bar (5) is fixed on the (5b) support plate. The adjustment means (5c) is fixed to the support plate (5b) and simultaneously clamped on the shaft (4a). The side view of the web folding apparatus with a moving web is represented by the Fig. 6.
The folding mechanism of the angle bar can be clearly seen in the top plan view of the web folding apparatus (1) of Fig. 7. The running web (2) with a bookmark (3) on one of the sheets of the web is guided by the angle bar (5) which is inclined at a suitable angle to the edge breaking roller (4) and is thereafter folded to produce a folded section (3a). In a preferred embodiment, the angle bar and the edge breaking roller are in an axial relationship and inclined at an acute angle of 65-70°. The angle bar (5) is clamped on the support plate (not shown) which is present at the bottom of the adjustment means (5c). The angle bar, the support plate and the adjustment means are clamped on the shaft (4a) by means of plurality of fastening means collectively represented by the reference numeral (5d).
The web folding apparatus (1) of the present invention further comprises of the gluing and the perforated slitter arrangement. With the help of this arrangement, the folded edge of the folded section (3a) is perforated and is glued towards the open edge of the moving web.
The placement of the web folding apparatus (1) in an existing printing press can be seen in the Fig. 8. After printing is completed the longitudinally moving web goes to the slitter (not shown) that is preferably located in between a conventional printing unit and conventional turner bar assembly. The slitter is followed by the former (8) wherein the web gets its first fold. The web passes through plurality of the nipping rollers collectively represented by the reference numeral (9). The term “Nipping roller” refers to the pressure rollers that push the web towards the running direction and maintains the tension of the web. After passing through the nipping rollers, the web moves towards the web folding apparatus (1) of the present invention where the folded section (3a) is created. Thereafter the web moves onto another nipping roller (9), cutting cylinder (10) and the collecting and folding cylinder (11) in succession.
Fig. 9 shows a perspective view of one of the sheets of the moving web with a folded section (3a). The bookmark (3) on one of the sheets of the web is folded by the web folding apparatus illustrated in the preceding figures to create a folded section (3a). In a preferred embodiment, 40-70mm of the folded section (3a) present on one of the sheets is allowed to come over to the first sheet. In the most preferred embodiment, 40-70mm of the bookmark present on the last sheet of the web is allowed to come over to the first sheet at 180°.
Fig. 10 shows the perspective view of the sheets of the web having a folded section (3a) or a bookmark fold that have been severed and folded by utilizing the apparatus illustrated in the preceding figures.
The above description constitutes a brief description of major components of the web folding apparatus that embody the invention. The method for creating the folded section (3a) on the longitudinally moving web contemplated by the invention and the steps involved in the method can be best ascertained by the Figs. 5, 6 and 8 which diagrammatically display the folding operations performed on the web passing through the web folding apparatus.
Referring to Figs. 5, 6 and 8 the web path in an offset printing press can be explained. A longitudinally moving web (2) comprising plurality of sheets passes through a printing unit (not shown). After the printing is completed, the web moves through a slitter (not shown) wherein the web is cut into unequal size by shifting the slitter at the lead level 40-70mm away from the centre. The offset slitting and the perforated slitting are indicated in the Fig. 4. Thereafter the web passes through the turner bars (not shown) which are fixed at the turner bar structure after the lead level slitter wherein the running web is turned and shifts its position. The web is then passed through a former (8) in quick succession and gets its first fold. After getting the first fold, the web passes onto the edge breaking roller of the web folding apparatus (1) and the folded section (3a) is folded by the angle bar (5) that locks the sheets just before the web enters the cutting cylinder of folder (10). The cutting cylinder of the folder (10) cuts the moving web horizontally which gives the web the final cut. In a preferred embodiment, the cutting cylinder of the folder (10) cuts the moving web horizontally to convert the web into a newspaper copy which is represented by Fig. 10. The arrangement of the web folding apparatus (1) of present invention can be altered by a person skilled in the art to get the desired result on various other types of the printing machines by obvious modifications without undue experimentation.
