DESC:TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates generally to mechanical clamping methods for round objects like round bar, conductor, fuses etc. More particularly, present invention provides an arrangement of mechanical clamping with multiple clamping points, horizontal and compact access for tightening hardware’s which is easy for manufacturing and use.
BACKGROUND AND THE PRIOR ART
There are several mechanical clamping methods for round objects are available. All methods are having specific use with certain limitations like difficulties for accessing hardware’s, bulky arrangements, excessive manual force, clamping localized area, access to hardware’s not in line with clamp centre line etc.
In many industries, for mass production clamping/holding is required to be done in minimum possible time. In electrical applications cartridge fuses are hold by mechanical half round or full round clamps. Here current involved is abnormally high & to carry such a high current, clamps are required to hold fuse terminal throughout the fuse terminal length with sufficient force. In addition to above there are instances when fuse replacement activity is required to be done quickly. But space in which clamp is mounted is too small to permit easy replacement of a blown fuse.
It is required to invent a new clamp which will overcome all above difficulties and provide secure & efficient contact between the clamp and holding object. It should provide positive joints without slipping. For electrical application, it will be very efficient to carry high current & at the same time said arrangement will allow fuse replacement activity to be done very quickly.
US2002125388 disclosed a multi-jaw clamp capable of attaching to various sized cylindrical objects such as iris rods of a professional movie camera. The multi-jaw clamp includes two housings that each hold a cylinder with at least two circular sections in the sides of the cylinders that are rotatable to change the size of the circular opening for the circular object to which the clamp can attach. The two housings contain hinge means for opening and closing the clamp and at each free end of the housings is a means for closing the clamp and locking the clamp in position around the cylindrical object.
Limitation in above cited prior art document:
· More number of assembly components.
· This clamp is not suitable for applications having space constrained.
· Clamp mounting screw cannot access from front side of object to be clamped.
· For current carrying components, it is required that clamp material shall be better conductor like cu, Al etc. But in this arrangement, manufacturing clamp components in Cu, Al would be very difficult & costly.
· This arrangement is suitable for only one diameter of round object. Variation in diameter may affect the effectiveness of arrangement.
US8276854 disclosed a clamp includes first and second parts, each of the parts having a circular central section and a pair of straight extensions extending away from the circular central section in opposite directions. In the first part the holes are closed holes, while in the second part the holes are open holes, connected by slots to an upper edge of the part. Bolts may be pre-located through the closed holes, with nuts threaded onto the bolts, but not tightened. The pre-placed bolts may be received through the slots and into the open holes of the second part. The nuts may then be tightened against the second part to clamp the circular central sections on opposite sides of a circular object, such as a vertical pipe run, between the parts. According to a variant, the bolts are permanently secured to the first part so as to prevent rotation of the bolts.
Limitations
· Clamp mounting screw can not access from front side of object to be clamped.
· Two numbers of clamping hardware required to properly tight the clamp.
· Clamping/unclamping operation is comparatively slower, as two bolts are required to tight/loose.
US3237980 disclosed a releasable clamping device for gripping cylindrical objects comprising, in combination: a supporting yoke provided with two opposed protruding arms, a swinging link associated with each protruding arm and having one end pivotally joined to its protruding arm at an intermediate point there along for swinging movement toward and away from the outermost portion of the arm, a clamping jaw associated with each swinging link and pivotally anchored thereto for rocking pivotal movement incorporating an integral actuator protruding from the clamping jaw beside and beyond its swinging link and the intermediate pivot point on its arm toward the supporting yoke, and extensible actuating means connected pivotally to a free end of each actuator near the yoke to rock both clamping jaws toward and away from each other upon command.
Limitations
· More number of assembly components.
· This clamp is not suitable for applications having space constrained.
· Clamp mounting screw can not access from front side of object to be clamped.
· This arrangement can not be used for parts carrying currents for long time.
· For current carrying components, it is required that clamp material shall be better conductor like cu, Al etc. But in this arrangement, manufacturing clamp components in Cu, Al would be very difficult & cost
US1946898 disclosed a fuse clamp having a base portion having a fuse holding contact jaw integrally connected therewith, a movable jaw hinged to said base and screw co-acting with a part of the hinged jaw for forcibly tilting and clamping the movable jaw against the terminal of a fuse.
Limitations
· This clamp is not suitable for applications having space constrained.
· Clamp mounting screw can not access from front side of object to be clamped.
As bolt is applying force from one side only, there are chances that clamp may bent or tilt to other side.
There can be point loading because of excessive tightening of bolt. With this we could not get uniformly distributed force over periphery of object to be clamped.
For current carrying components, it is required that clamp material shall be better conductor like cu, Al etc. But in this arrangement it would be difficult for Cu, Al to sustained high clamping force.
The present invention provides an arrangement for mechanical clamping with multiple clamping points, horizontal and compact access for tightening hardware’s which is easy for manufacturing and use.

Accordingly, present invention provides an arrangement of mechanical clamping with multiple clamping points, horizontal and compact access for tightening hardware’s which is easy for manufacturing and use. The present invention used 2 members with taper surface. Both members are hold together with the help of Bolt & lock nut arrangement. This member assembly can be placed in clamp for tightening the round object hold inside the clamp.
FIG.1 shows member 1 & 2 having taper surface A, B, C and D hold together with bolt 3 & lock nut 4. Taper member 2 is having tapped hole and member 1 is having plain hole. This invention is based on relative movement of member 1 & 2 with respect to bolt movement. If we hold & separate member assembly with some spacer and start rotating the bolt, then both members will come closer to each other. This is because of the tapping at one end and plain hole at other end. Here, we have utilized this relative movement of members with respect to bolt rotation for clamping the holder/clamp.
FIG.2 shows member assembly mounted on holder 5. Holder is provided with square slot at open end & other end of holder is kept closed (as shown in FIG.3.) Taper member can be assembled through this square slot & ensuring that all four taper surface A, B, C and D are in contact with inner surface of holder slot. Bolt 3 & lock nut 4 can be mounted in member hole as shown in FIG.3. In this way complete assembly of holder with taper member can be made.
FIG.4 is showing complete assembly of clamp. It can be easily understood that if we rotate bolt 3, bolt will try to pull member 2 inward (because of the tapping provided). Same time member 2 will impart opposite force on member 1 which is freely mounted on bolt & secured in square slot of clamp. Therefore, both members are moving closer to each other. Opposing force by clamp body will be imparted on taper surface A, B, C & D in contact. If we go on rotating the bolt, it will force both members to move inward & act against the clamp force. Ultimately taper surface provided on member will push the clamp inward. In this way we can achieve the positive tightening of clamp.
Here, the limited access is required for hardware’s tightening. Clamp arrangement is easy for manufacturing and simple for assembly.
While opening the clamp, it is required to simply rotate the bolt 3 in reversed direction. While rotating bolt in reversed direction, there can be jamming of clamp because of burrs, manufacturing error, over tightening etc. Same can be overcome with the help of lock nut provided near member 1. When we rotate the bolt for tightening the clamp lock nut will freely rotate with bolt. But during opening, it will get locked with taper member 1. This will push both the members outward & help clamp for opening during abnormal conditions.
The present invention relates to arrangement used for clamping round bar, Electrical fuses, round links etc.
Basic objective of present invention is to provide clamping arrangement with multiple clamping points, horizontal & compact access for tightening hardware’s, easy for manufacturing & use, suitable for application where there is limited access to clamping hardware’s & inexpensive for production.
ADVANTAGES
· Lesser number of components
· Access to clamping hardware is from front side of object to be clamped.
· Suitable for application where limited space is available, as clamp assembly components do not required wide opening area.
· Clamping/unclamping operation is faster, as only one bolt is required to tight/loose.
· In this arrangement current carrying clamp material is copper & tapered links are made in steel. So, we can get effective current carrying though copper clamp & sufficient application of clamping force though steel links
