Abstract: Abstract:- Presently about 1500 t/year of Magnesium foundry sand is used for making moulds and cores. The presence of KBF4 in sand doesn't permit the reclamation of burnt Magnesium sand by the thermal regeneration. In the present invention, the burnt Magnesium sand will be subjected for a series of operations like mechanical, chemical treatment followed by adjusting the ADV of sand with Type A or Type B chemical buffer mixtures. The addition of these chemical mixtures will automatically adjusts any changes in pH of sand and thereby it reduces binder consumption and time. The reclaimed sand in all respects is similar to virgin sand, and this reclaimed sand can be reused for making Magnesium alloy sand casting moulds. This innovative method is not only eco friendly, less binder consumption and thereby it brings in huge savings.
"We claim"
1. A combination of eco friendty Wet process followed by Thermal process for reclamation of waste Magnesium foundry burnt sand with Optimized Acid Demand Value (ADV) parameters is used to make Magnesium foundry moulds and cores. The cluster less Magnesium foundry burnt sand has been bonded by an phenolic resin binder along with Potassium fluroborate is mixed with hot water (70 - 80°C) in the ratio of 1:2 with a contact time of 30mins. To the subsequent dried sand adding a calculated amount of acidic buffer mixture prior to the thermal treatment of the sand -developed at Foundry & Forge Division, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is a new process developed for the Complete reclamation process for burnt Magnesium foundry sand, the details of which are not available in open literature.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the acidic buffer solution is selected from definite amount of Sodium acetate & Acetic acid mixed with water.
3. The process as claimed in claim 1, where if Acid demand value(ADV)is 1.51 - 3.0, then Type A (Buffer) with a composition of Sodium acetate (0.20gms), Acetic acid (0.5gms) and 50ml water to 1kg of sand.
4. The process as claimed in claim 1, where if Acid demand value (ADV) is 3.10 - 6.0, then Type B (Buffer) with a composition of Sodium acetate (1 .Ogms), Acetic acid (0.5gms) and 50ml water to 1kg of sand.
5. The process as claimed in claim 1, where in thermal reclamation is carried out at 600 - 700°C for 1 hour.
6. The reclaimed sand produced using the processes as claimed in claim 1, having Loss on Ignition (LOI) (<0.25%), pH (6.0 - 8.0) and ADV (<1.5).
