Specification

[001] The present invention, in general, relates to an EGR system in an internal combustion engine and, more particularly, to an EGR system in an inclined engine.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[002] Background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention.
[003] Controlled engine exhaust gas recirculation is a known technique for reducing oxides of nitrogen in products of combustion that are exhausted from an internal combustion engine to atmosphere. A known EGR system comprises an EGR valve that is controlled in accordance with engine operating conditions to regulate the amount of engine exhaust gas that is recirculated to the induction fuel-air flow entering the engine for combustion so as to limit the combustion temperature and hence reduce the formation of oxides of nitrogen. Whereas in gasoline engines, EGR is generally added to increase the fuel economy by decreasing the part load pumping losses.
[004] The use of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems in internal combustion engines is well known. A typical EGR system takes a fraction of the exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold and injects it into the intake air for the engine where it is mixed with fresh air and fuel and then reburned. Mixing exhaust gases with fresh intake air and fuel lowers peak combustion temperatures thereby reducing formation rates of oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust gas. Whereas in gasoline engines, EGR is generally added to increase the fuel economy by decreasing the part load pumping losses. The use of an EGR system for the injection of exhaust gases into the intake air requires a plurality of separate components. The separate components can pose a problem since the space available in vehicle engine compartments is typically limited

[005] It is known to mount EGR valves on engine intake manifolds where the valves are subject to a harsh operating environment that includes wide temperature extremes, water splashes and vibrations. Further, stringent demands imposed by governmental regulation of exhaust emissions have created a need for improved control of such valves. An EGR valve that possesses more accurate and quicker response can be advantageous by providing improved control of tailpipe emissions, improved driveability, and/or improved fuel economy for a vehicle having an internal combustion engine that is equipped with an EGR system. A valve that is more compact in size can be advantageous because of limitations on available space in a vehicle engine compartment. It should also be possible to attain further economies and benefits by more fully integrating EGR valves with intake manifolds.
[006] Currently, the EGR valve is mounted on the cylinder head and the cylinder head has a gallery for EGR gas flow. An EGR outlet pipe connects the cylinder head and the intake manifold. In surge tank, EGR gets mixed with fresh air coming from throttle and distributed to each cylinder.
[007] Due to inclined configuration of engine and mounting of engine under the seats - EGR valve which is mounted on the exhaust side becomes near to the ground and the tendency for splash of water on to the EGR valve increases and also temperature is high due to less flow of fresh air due to engine mounting below seat.
[008] As the entire length of circuit is also more - the transient response of EGR whenever the EGR valve opens is very poor.
[009] Therefore, there is a need to provide an EGR valve mounting arrangement on an intake manifold which can overcome the above mentioned drawbacks.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION
[0010] It is therefore the object of the invention to overcome the aforementioned and other drawbacks existing in prior systems.

[0011] Another object of the present invention is to provide an EGR system in an inclined engine.
[0012] Another object of the present invention is a mounting arrangement for an EGR system in an inclined engine.
[0013] Another object of the present invention is to provide an EGR valve mounting arrangement on the surge tank.
[0014] Another object is to reduce the vibration on the EGR valve.
[0015] Another object of the present invention is to provide an EGR valve mounting arrangement on an intake manifold which provides a quick transient response.
[0016] Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an EGR valve mounting arrangement on an intake manifold which protects the EGR valve from water splashing.
[0017] Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an EGR valve mounting arrangement on an intake manifold which protects the EGR valve from extreme temperatures.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0037] While the embodiments of the disclosure are subject to various modifications and alternative forms, specific embodiment thereof have been shown by way of example in the figures and will be described below. It should be understood, however, that it is not intended to limit the disclosure to the particular

forms disclosed, but on the contrary, the disclosure is to cover all modifications, equivalents, and alterative falling within the scope of the disclosure.
[0038] As used in the description herein and throughout the claims that follow, the meaning of "a", "an", and "the" include plural reference unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Also, as used in the description herein, the meaning of "in" includes "in" and "on" unless the context clearly dictates otherwise.
[0039] The terms "comprises", "comprising", or any other variations thereof used in the disclosure, are intended to cover a non-exclusive inclusion, such that a device, system, assembly that comprises a list of components does not include only those components but may include other components not expressly listed or inherent to the system, or assembly, or device. In other words, one or more elements in a system or device proceeded by "comprises... a" does not, without more constraints, preclude the existence of other elements or additional elements in the system, apparatus or device.
[0040] Hereinafter an EGR system (201) in an inclined engine with a mounting arrangement (200) is explained in detail.
[0041] Referring to figures 2, 3 and 4, illustrating an EGR system (201) in an inclined engine with a mounting arrangement (200) and the sectional view of the same according to one of the embodiments of present subject matter.
[0042] The EGR system (201) in an inclined engine with a mounting arrangement (200), the arrangement (200) comprises of an EGR valve (203), an EGR cooler (204), a surge tank (205), a cylinder block (206) and an EGR pipe (207) wherein the EGR valve (203) is connected to the surge tank (205) through an adapter (208) and the EGR cooler (204) is mounted on the cylinder block (206) and connected to the EGR valve (203) through the EGR pipe (207).
[0043] The arrangement (200) allows the EGR valve (203) to be mounted towards the intake side of the intake manifold (202) where the temperature is less. The EGR

valve (203) is connected to the surge tank (205). The mounting point of the surge tank (205) is higher compared to the mounting point of a cylinder block (206) which also results in the protection of EGR valve (203) as the cylinder block (206), an oil pan (212) and a transmission unit (213) of the engine is placed below the EGR valve
(203).
[0044] The adapter (208) is a two-part structure; an upper part (208a) and a base part (208b). Further, the base part (208b) is integrated with the surge tank (205).
[0045] The adapter (208) which connects the EGR valve (203) to the intake manifold surge tank (205) is mounted on the intake manifold surge tank (205) and further provides an EGR gallery (209), which is an integrated and a protruding structure on the surge tank (205). The EGR gallery (209) and a purge gallery (210) are an integral part of the surge tank (205) and merge with a throttle (211). The gases from EGR valve (EGR gas) flows through this EGR gallery (209) and purge gallery (210) and mixes with fuel at a throttle (211) of the intake manifold (202).
[0046] In an embodiment, the EGR gallery (209) and the purge gallery (210) are placed on the opposite sides of the throttle (211).
[0047] The EGR gallery (209) and the purge gallery (210), on the surge tank (205), also increase the overall stiffness and address the Vibration issue of EGR valve (203) because they are mounted on the Intake manifold surge tank (205).
[0048] Since the EGR valve (203 is mounted directly on the Intake manifold surge tank (205) where the EGR gases gets mixed with fresh air, the transient response is good because the Exhaust gas from EGR does not have to travel a long distance to get mixed with the fresh air.
[0049] Each of the appended claims defines a separate invention, which for infringement purposes are recognized as including equivalents to the various elements or limitations specified in the claims. Depending on the context, all references below to the "invention" may in some cases refer to certain specific

embodiments only. In other cases, it will be recognized that references to the "invention" will refer to subject matter recited in one or more, but not necessarily all, of the claims.
[0050] With respect to the use of substantially any plural and/or singular terms herein, those having skill in the art can translate from the plural to the singular and/or from the singular to the plural as is appropriate to the context and/or application. The various singular/plural permutations may be expressly set forth herein for sake of clarity.
