Abstract: The high-pressure pump 10 comprises a CAM assembly 18 having a camshaft 20, a roller 22 positioned on the camshaft 20 and a seal ring 24 fitted around the 5 camshaft 20. The high-pressure pump 10 comprises a barrel 26 having a plunger 28 placed above the CAM assembly 18 in the high-pressure pump 10. The high-pressure pump 10 comprises a back flow unit 29 having a back flow pipe 30 for a flow of fuel from the high-pressure pump 10 to the fuel tank 12. The high-pressure pump 10 comprises a sensing element 10 32 fitted on an outer surface of the high pressure pump 10 in proximity to the CAM assembly 18 such that, an ECU 16 connected to the high pressure pump 10, detects a fault in the CAM assembly 18 based on a signal from the sensing element 32.
Claims:1. A high pressure pump (10) in a vehicle (11), said vehicle (11) comprising
- a fuel tank (12) connected to a high-pressure pump (10) via an electric feed
pump (13); a common rail unit (14) connected to said high-pressure pump
(10) via a high-pressure line (15); an electronic control 5 unit (ECU) (16)
connected to said high-pressure pump (10) and said electric feed pump (13);
said high-pressure pump (10) comprising :
- a CAM assembly (18) having a camshaft (20) , a roller (22) positioned on
said camshaft (20) and a seal ring (24) fitted around said camshaft (20) ;
10 - a barrel (26) having a plunger (28) placed above said CAM assembly (18) in
said high-pressure pump (10);
- a back flow unit (29) having a back flow pipe (30) for a flow of fuel from said
high-pressure pump (10) to said fuel tank (12);
characterized in that :
- a sensing element (32) fitted on an outer surface of said high pressure pump
(10) in proximity to said CAM assembly (18) such that, said ECU (16) adapted
to detect a fault in said CAM assembly (18) based on a signal from said
sensing element (32).
2. The high-pressure pump (10) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said sensing
element (32) is a pressure-sensing element adapted to detect a variation in a
pressure level in said CAM assembly (18) for a predefined time.
3. The high-pressure pump (10) as claimed in claim 2, wherein said sensing
25 element (32) is connected to said ECU(16) and based on a detected pressure
variation level in said CAM assembly(18), said ECU (16) controls a fuel flow from
an electric feed pump (13) to said high-pressure pump (10).
4. The high-pressure pump (10) as claimed in claim 3, wherein based on said
detected pressure variation level in said CAM assembly (18), said electric feed
pump (13) reduces said fuel flow to said high-pressure pump (10).
5. The high-pressure pump (10) as claimed in claim 4, wherein due 5 to said reduced
flow of said fuel into said high-pressure pump (10), a pressure in a common rail
unit (14) varies from a threshold pressure level.
6. The high-pressure pump (10) as claimed in claim 5, wherein said ECU (16)
10 adapted to generate an alert/warning on a dashboard of a vehicle (11), upon
detecting said variation of pressure in said common rail unit (14).
7. The high-pressure pump (10) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said fault in said
CAM assembly (18) is due to any one of the following conditions comprising a
15 blockage in a backflow unit (29) of said high-pressure pump (10), a kink in a
backflow pipe (30) of said back flow unit (29), a closed non-return valve in said
backflow unit (29) of said high-pressure pump (10) and the like.
8. A method of working of a high pressure pump (10) in a vehicle (11), said high20
pressure pump (10) comprises a CAM assembly (18) and said high-pressure
pump (10) is connected to an electronic control unit (ECU) (16) and a common
rail unit (14);
said method comprising :
25 - receiving fuel from a fuel tank (12) into said high-pressure pump (10) via an
electric feed pump (13);
- operating said CAM assembly (18) in said high-pressure pump(10) upon
receiving said fuel;
characterized in that :
30 - detecting a variation of a pressure in said CAM assembly (18) for a
predefined amount of time by a sensing element (32);
- reducing a flow of said fuel in said electric feed pump(13) based on said
variation of said pressure in said CAM assembly(18);
- detecting a variation of a pressure value in a common rail unit (14) when said
flow of said fuel is reduced in said high-pressure pump (10);
- detecting a fault in said CAM assembly (18),when said pressure 5 value in said
common rail unit (14) is less than a threshold value. , Description:The high-pressure pump 10 comprises a CAM assembly 18 having a camshaft 20, a roller
