An end shield 20 for mounting on a stack 24 of laminations 26 forming the stator 22 of an electric motor, the end shield 20 having an inner face 30 facing the stack 24, mounting openings 34 alignable with holes 28 extending into the stack 24, and a spacer 42 on the inner face 30 adjacent at least one of the mounting openings 34 to space the inner face 30 from the stack 24 so that a threaded fastener 48 extending through a mounting opening 34 and into a hole 28 in the stack 24 can more readily pull material from the top-most lamination 26 surrounding the hole 28 to form a protuberance 50 on the surface to engage and resist movement of the end shield 20 relative to the stack 24.
