The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[001] The present subject matter described herein generally relates to an exhaust system, and more specifically to an exhaust muffler of a vehicle.
BACKGROUND
[002] An exhaust system is used in all types of vehicles to direct exhaust gases or fumes produced in an internal combustion engine away from the engine. The exhaust system is configured to improve the performance of the engine, to remove harmful substances, to improve fuel consumption and to control noise. Typically, the exhaust system comprises many pipes and parts that work in conjunction to provide a way for exhaust gasses to escape the engine. These parts include the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, tailpipe, resonator and muffler. A baffle is an acoustically tuned metallic object placed inside the muffler to cancel out or muffle the sound from the exhaust outlet. Conventionally, the muffler baffle is provided inside a muffler shell and provides restriction to travelling sound waves for maximizing sound attenuation through destructive interference of sound waves and also the baffle provides support and adds stiffness to the muffler shell.
[003] The existing design of the muffler baffle is such that, the muffler baffle is placed perpendicular to the direction of the exhaust gas flow, resulting in obstruction of flow restriction and drop in the exhaust gas velocity and increased flow noise for the exhaust gas. Further the muffler baffle also increases the backpressure resulting in reduction of the engine performance. The muffler baffle is configured with a plurality of cut-outs made by a stamping process wherein one of the cut-out is configured to position and mount an outlet pipe of the muffler and remaining cut-outs are configured for flowing of the exhaust gas. Because of certain limitation of the cut-outs by stamping process certain area of the muffler baffle is retained to provide stiffness to the muffler baffle. This remaining area of the muffler baffle causes unwanted obstruction to the flow thereby resulting in increased backpressure.
[004] In one of the existing muffler baffle, as illustrated in figure 1(a), 1(b) and figure 1(c), an exhaust muffler 100 is disclosed. The exhaust muffler 100 comprises a muffler shell 101, a muffler exhaust pipe 102, and a muffler baffle 103. The muffler baffle 103 comprises cut-outs (105a, 105b) for exhaust gas flow, an opening 106 for mounting of the muffler exhaust pipe 102. The muffler baffle 103 is configured to align perpendicular to the exhaust gas flow direction 104 thereby increasing the flow restriction.
[005] Hence to overcome the aforesaid objection there is a requirement to provide the muffler baffle which will provide adequate support to the exhaust outlet/inlet pipe and by providing minimum restriction to the exhaust gas flow.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
[006] One object of the present disclosure is to provide a muffler baffle design which is compact, lightweight and cost effective due to ease of manufacturing.
[007] Another object of the present disclosure is to provide a muffler baffle with improved structural stiffness of the muffler resulting in reduced structure borne noise of the exhaust system.
[008] Yet another object of the present disclosure is to provide a muffler baffle which will provide minimal obstruction to the exhaust flow.
[009] Yet another object of the present disclosure is to provide a muffler baffle to reduce flow noise and backpressure.

For example, as an aid to understanding, the following appended claims may contain usage of the introductory phrases "at least one" and "one or more" to introduce claim recitations. However, the use of such phrases should not be construed to imply that the introduction of a claim recitation by the indefinite articles "a" or "an" limits any particular claim containing such introduced claim recitation to inventions containing only one such recitation, even when the same claim includes the introductory phrases "one or more" or "at least one" and indefinite articles such as "a" or "an" (e.g., "a" and/or "an" should typically be interpreted to mean "at least one" or "one or more"); the same holds true for the use of definite articles used to introduce claim recitations. In addition, even if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is explicitly recited, those skilled in the art will recognize that such recitation should typically be interpreted to mean at least the recited number (e.g., the bare recitation of "two recitations," without other modifiers, typically means at least two recitations, or two or more recitations). Furthermore, in those instances where a convention analogous to "at least one of A, B, and C, etc." is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention (e.g., "a system having at least one of A, B, and C" would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and/or A, B, and C together, etc.). In those instances, where a convention analogous to "at least one of A, B, or C, etc." is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention (e.g., "a system having at least one of A, B, or C" would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and/or A, B, and C together, etc.). For example, the phrase "A or B" will be understood to include the possibilities of "A" or "B" or "A and B."
[0057] Although implementations for an exhaust muffler have been described in language specific to structural features and/or methods, it is to be understood that the appended claims are not necessarily limited to the specific features described. Rather, the specific features are disclosed as examples of implementation for the exhaust muffler.
