[0001] The present invention generally relates to a synergistic herbal composition and more particularly relates to the herbal composition useful for treating lung diseases, bronchitis, acute bronchitis, persistent cough, headache, wheezing and difficulty in breathing, bacterial and viral respiratory infections, colds, flu, asthma, allergies, dust mites, sinusitis laryngitis, asthma, seasonal cough, pneumonia, cough with mucus etc.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Cough and difficulty in breathing are common problems in every age group whether it be a young children, adult, or seniors. The causes range from a mild, self-limited illness to severe, life-threatening disease.

[0003] Excess smoking irritates the bronchial tubs; and lowers their resistance so that they become vulnerable. It leads to a condition called bronchitis. The inflammation of the mucus membrane lining the bronchiole and bronchial tube within the chest with breathing disorder affecting the expiratory function is the characteristic feature.
In most cases of bronchitis, the larynx, trachea and bronchial tubes are acutely inflamed. The tissues arc swollen due to irritation. Large quantities of mucus are secreted and poured into the windpipe to protect the inflamed mucus membrane.
The phlegm, when expelled is found to be viscid and purulent. There is usually a high fever, some difficulty in breathing and deep chest cough. Other symptoms are hoarseness and pain in the chest and loss of appetite. Breathing trouble continuous till the inflammation subsides and mucus is removed. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) features progressive chronic airflow obstruction due to chronic bronchitis, emphysema or both. The obstruction of airflow may be partly reversible and some patients may manifest bronchial hyper-responsiveness.

However, the above formulations are not so effective against chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchitis and respiratory disorder.

[0005] Wide arrays of antitussive combinations are commercially available. The combinations can consist of two to four active ingredients and include any combination of an antitussive plus sympathomimetics, antihistamines, expectorants and/or analgesics. These cough products are very controversial and rarely offer an advantage.

[0006] The over-the-counter (OTC) market has offered products for throat soothing for many years. Majorities of these products utilize phenol as their active ingredient. Phenol is the simple alcohol derivative of benzene. Both of these chemicals are listed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as extremely carcinogenic.

[0007] Histamine is an endogenous mediator and plays an important role in bronchoconstriction. Mainly it acts through different receptors in the bronchial muscle. The histamine is stored in the mast cells during stress or abnormal physiological function, the mast cell degranulates and the histamine is released. The mediator histamine is playing a key role in the cough and throat infections.

[0008] A natural non-carcinogenic formulation for treatment of cough, soothing of throat is an alternative of phenol especially for the speakers, who need to speak for a longer duration of time, to prevent the breakdown of voice and dryness of the mouth. Hitherto, an herbal formulation is the need of the hour having throat soothing activity along with prevention of dryness of mouth and breaking of voice. Only on oral tradition prevalent in certain group of South Indian Brahmin (Aiyangar) particularly those families who participate in vedic recital for days together, (one of the authors of this patent is from one such family) we have proposed an entirely novel formulation(s). These people use Piper cubeba for clearing throats and to maintain a healthy and sound vocal system, while they recite veda continuously for over a week. Based on this lead we propose a novel formulation(s) in a combination with a better dosage form and activity.

[0009] During the last two decades there has been an increasing interest in utilization of Indian Medicinal plants for treating chronic respiratory disorders as some of these plants are known to be used in traditional formulation for at least alleviating the symptoms associated with them.

[0010] Ayurvedic System of Formulation originated in India more than 5000 years ago, utilizes the curative properties of plants for treating diseases. Ayurveda recognizes three different humors, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which control the body metabolism. Vata controls all the movements of the body as it releases energy mainly from the catabolic reactions, while Pitta is responsible for the enzymatic reactions responsible for both anabolic and catabolic pathways. However, Kapha is responsible for anabolic reactions, which are responsible for all synthetic compounds deposited in the body. A harmonious working of the above three humors in a balanced manner is responsible for the optimum functioning of a healthy individual. Any imbalance in the harmonious working of the three humors leads to imbalance of body metabolism as well as body functions, which ultimately result, into different ailments. The primary purpose of Ayurvedic System of Formulation is to bring about a balanced state of three humors and to exert prophylactic or curative effects.

[0011] Phytochemical investigation of the herbal drugs or their extracts reveals the presence of several chemical compounds. Through all the ingredients do not possess specific therapeutic activity, it is believed that the different chemical compounds present in the plant or its extract act in harmonious manner and possibly due to synergistic effect of the compounds, some ingredients potentiate the therapeutic activity of the main active ingredient or even retard the undesirable actions of the main compound because individual compounds may not be as effective as that of the mixture of compounds present in the plant.

[0012] Multi-ingredient therapy is preferred over single drug therapy since the therapy may be effective in any one of these three humors i.e. Vata, Pitta & Kapha for the manifestation of the diseases. At the same time, most of the diseases are associated with imbalance of more than one humor producing different symptoms involving various organs of the body. Hence a multi-ingredient therapy includes a combination of herbal drugs which may have either a complimentary or supplementary action for each other.

[0013] Using these Ayurvedic principles as a guide, the inventor created herbal cough remedy formulation with carefully chosen herbal ingredients that balance the body's three basic humors. By administering a safe and effective dose of composition made up of these ingredients, all types of coughs can be treated.

[0014] As a result of the inventors' thorough research into the aforementioned goals, new formulations for oral ingestion have been created that use herbal medications of natural origin and incorporate them into binders and diluting agents to create oral dosage forms.

An advantage of the present disclosure may be that it is natural, and no side effects of this formulation has been seen so far.
