FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to an improved garnish for maintaining designed gap
betweenquarter glass and body panel of vehicle.
BACKGROUND/PRIOR ART
Quarter glass of vehicle is mounted by various ways of mounting i.e. direct
mounting and encapsulation by means of a garnish. For direct mounting,
reference may be made to fig. 1, wherein the quarter glass (1) is attached to a
molded plastic part (2) on one side towards front of vehicle. The quarter glass
with plastic part is fastened to body panel of vehicle at three locations (3).
However, it is associated with the following drawbacks:-
-: I Attachment of Fasteners (clips) depends on Glass Accuracy in terms of
Curvature and trimline. Therefore, there are chances of inaccuracy in
positioning of fastener.
- Values of gap and level difference on vehicle level get affected directly due
to glass accuracy, fastener positioning and Method of mounting Glass on
:Body|Panel.
Regarding encapsulation, reference may be made to fig 2 in which a molded
plastic garnish forming a closed loop (4) is implemented to encapsulate quarter
glass (5) for covering the gap from all sides. This encapsulated glass is fastened
to theibodiy panel with the help of a plurality of fasteners (6) as shown.
However,!^itj involves the disadvantage of very high manufacturing cost.
Now reference may be made to an existing patent KR100341502 directing to
quarter glass mounting means of automobile.

It comprises of elastic clips, one end of which forming a supporter and other
end constitutes a supporting protuberance. The supporter is accommodated in
an inserting,groove of a plastic molding so as to make the elastic clip fix to the
molding.: Aj glass is secured to a quarter panel by making the protuberance
engaged on flanges formed at the quarter panel.
However, the above does not fulfill requirements of the instant invention.
In view of the above, there is a requirement to devise a garnish so as to address
prior issues,; for which the instant invention has been proposed.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An object of this invention is to propose an improved garnish for maintaining;
designed;gap,bgtween quarter glass and body panel of vehicle.

Another object of this invention is to propose an improved garnish for
maintaining designed gap between quarter glass and body panel of vehicle
which obviates shortcomings of prior art (s).
Further object of this invention is to propose an improved garnish for
maintaining designed gap between quarter glass and body panel of vehicle
which fixes: quarter glass in one position.
Yet another object of this invention is to propose an improved garnish for
maintaining designed gap between quarter glass and body panel of vehicle
which is cost effective and requires minimum time of assembly.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided an improved garnish for
maintaining designed gap between quarter glass and body panel of vehicle

comprisirig; a longitudinal member including a supporting member mounted
with a dividing member having clip mounting to obtain two parts, wherein one
part, end of which is integrated to a flange member to receive quarter glass of
vehicle.

The present: invention makes a disclosure regarding an improved garnish for
maintaining designed gap of quarter glass from body panel of vehicle.

Now reference may be made to fig 3 in which the garnish comprises a
longitudinal member (G). For detailed view from one end of the garnish,
reference may be made to fig 4.
The longitudinal member includes a supporting member (1') mounted with a
dividing member (2') dividing the supporting member into two parts. One of the
parts. (3') is employed to hold quarter glass of vehicle. The supporting member
is having: substantially S-section as shown. Both the members (1', 2') are
integrated to form a single structure.
The dividing member is integrated to a clip mounting (4') at/in proximity to
both ends as illustrated in fig 3.
This end remains at the top while being assembled in the vehicle. For detailing
out other end of the garnish, reference may be made to fig 5. There is provision
of a member (5') to restrict downward movement (i.e. towards the ground) of the
quarter glass following assembly onto the vehicle.
The member (5') is a quadrilateral member, which is integrated to other end of
the divided part (3') of the garnish. The member constitutes a flange and is
protruded in the transverse direction facing the dividing member as shown. Its
one surface (6') receiving the glass acts as a resting surface for the glass, which
is substantially flat, whereas its other surface may be tapered. Alternatively,
said other surface can be flat as well.
Various dimensions of the member including length, width, thickness are
devised according to the size of the quarter glass wherein the width is as per
thickness/styling surface of the glass. So that at the time of assembly it is not
broken by the force and also following the assembly it is not broken by the
weight of glass.

The inner surface (7') of the part (3') is attached with the help of adhesive tape
to one edge, of the glass being supported by the same.
The member (5') maintains horizontal gap (8') from the dividing member for
allowing expansion/contraction of glass during usage. It also maintains a
vertical gap (9') from the extreme end of the dividing member as best seen in fig
6 to maintain required gap of the glass from the body panel.
The provision of member in the garnish gives rise to the following.
- Provision of a reference at the time of Garnish and Glass assembly, while
doing manually or mechanically. Thus it facilitates assembly Procedure
for Garnish and Glass Assembly due to provision of a reference point for
Glass Assembly.
- At the time of fixing Glass Comp Qtr. Window on Side Body Panel, as the
movement of Glass is restricted in Z direction due to proper assembly,
therefore the values of Gap With rest of the components in the body are
maintained within Tolerance.
- Hides the corner of the glass, which improves appearance.

ADVANTAGEOUS FEATURES
- Coverage to edge of quarter glass, thereby improving aesthetics.
- Controlling downward movement of the quarter glass during assembly
thereby maintaining designed gap.
- Helps in locating glass in garnish according to design condition for
' manual/robotic assembly.
It is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications,
adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant embodiments
employing the concepts and features of this invention are intended to be within
the scope jof the present invention, which is further set forth under the
following claims :-

WE CLAIM;
1. An improved garnish for maintaining designed gap between quarter glass
and body panel of vehicle comprising a longitudinal member including a
supporting member mounted with a dividing member having clip
mounting to obtain two parts, wherein one part, end of which is
integrated to a flange member to receive quarter glass of vehicle.
2. An improved garnish for maintaining designed gap between quarter glass
;and body panel of vehicle as claimed in claim 1 wherein the supporting
member is having substantially S-section, which is divided into two parts
by the dividing member integrated to the clip mounting at/ in proximity
to both ends thereof constituting a single structure.
3. An improved garnish for maintaining designed gap between quarter glass
arid body panel of vehicle as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein said one
part inner surface of which is attached with the help of adhesive tape to
one edge of the quarter glass and bottom end of the part directing
downwards during assembly is integrated to the flange member.
4. An improved garnish for maintaining designed gap between quarter glass
and body panel of vehicle as claimed in any of the proceeding claims
wherein the member comprises a quadrilateral member, which is
protruded in the transverse direction facing the dividing member.

5. An.iriiproved garnish for maintaining designed gap between quarter glass
and body panel of vehicle as claimed in any of the proceeding claims
wherein the quadrilateral member, one surface of which receiving the
glass acts as a resting surface for the glass is substantially flat.
6. An; improved garnish for maintaining designed gap between quarter glass
and body panel of vehicle as claimed in any of the proceeding claims
wherein the other surface of the member can be tapered or flat.
7. An improved garnish for maintaining designed gap between quarter glass
and body panel of vehicle as claimed in any of the proceeding claims
wherein the member maintains horizontal gap from the dividing member
for allowing expansion/contraction of glass during usage.
8. An improved garnish for maintaining designed gap between quarter glass
and body panel of vehicle as claimed in any of the proceeding claims
wherein the member maintains a vertical gap from the extreme end of the
dividing member to maintain required gap of the glass from the body
panel.
9. An improved garnish for maintaining designed gap between quarter glass
and body panel of vehicle as claimed in any of the proceeding claims
wherein the width of the member is according to thickness/styling
surface of the quadrilateral glass.

is associated with the advantageous features such as herein described.
