Specification

FIELD OF INVENTION
The invention relates to an improved pedal driven Sabai Grass Rope Making
Machine. More particularly the invention relates to an improved Sabai Grass Rope
Making machine which can be driven by leg and a single person can operate it
while feeding grass simultaneously.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Various kinds of ropes are produced from plant origin like coir rope, Manila rope
and jute rope etc. Ropes are also made of many other materials. Sabai grass is
less popular. Sabai grass is a locally available and widely grown plant in most
parts of India. A type of rope known as Sabai grass rope is prepared from the
leaves of this plant in states of Orissa, West Bengal and Jharkhand. Sabai grass
rope is used for many purposes like weaving cots and for tying various objects
like logs of wood and straw on the roof. Sabai grass grows to a height of 1 to 1.5
meters. The leaves are cut and dried on the sun. The dried leaves are twisted
manually.
This is an age old tradition being practiced for more than two centuries. The rope
needs polishing before it is sold in the market. Traditional method of polishing
involves scratching on the tree trunk by the rope, and then being pulled by the
people standing around the trunk.
Prevailing state of the arts are:-
- Traditional hand driven twisting either used wooden Tukda or manually.
- Operation involves application of force to twist the grass by hand only with the
help of a timber piece.
This is a tedious and poorly effective method, which require a lot of efforts and
time and add substantially to the cost of production.

To overcome this, enfolding of grass for making rope is carried out on a bobbin.
It has a diameter according to latai and made of various materials like wood or
iron etc. The device is fitted at the centre of a shaft.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
1. It is therefore an object of the invention to propose an improved pedal driven
Sabai Grass Rope Making Machine which is compact, sturdy, trouble free and
user friendly.
2. Another object of the invention is to propose an improved pedal driven Sabai
Grass Rope Making Machine which increases the output to a considerable extent
while reducing the fatigue of operator.
3. A Further object of the invention is to propose an improved pedal driven Sabai
Grass Rope Making Machine which maintains a uniform quality of output.
4. A still further object of the invention is to propose an improved pedal driven
Sabai Grass Rope Making Machine which makes the working condition
ergonomically safer than the traditional method.

machine.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION
When the pedal (17) is moved 'to and fro' by the foot, the 'to and fro' motion is
transmitted by the pedal rod (18) to the rotary motion of gear 1 (14). Pinion 5
(2) rotates through gear drives in a chain of power transmission from gear 1 (14)
to gear 3 (15) via intermediate pinion. Gear 7 (9) rotates because of gear drive
gear 3 (15) via intermediate shaft (18) and pinion. Gear 7(9) and rotating pipe
(6) are integral and rotate together.
Feed inlet (1) and similar conical pipes do not rotate.
A pipe is attached to Pinion 5 (2) which rotates in the Bearing A (3). This pipe
carries a guide vane (not shown in the figure) for twisting the leaf given in the
Feed inlet (1).
Bearing B (5) supports the Rotating pipe (6).
Bobbin (8) is mounted on the Rotating pipe (6). It is free to rotate on the
Rotating pipe. Due to frictional force the Bobbin (8) will rotate along with
Rotating pipe (6). The frictional force can be controlled by a spring (12). Holds a
Tightener belt (11) wound on the Groove on the bobbin (10).
Working of the machine.
Sabai grass leaves are fed in two streams through two Feed inlets (1). These are
conical pipes and these are stationery.
There are two Pinion 5 (2). These is a tube inside each pinion (not shown in the
figure). The tube carries inside a vane. The leaves are twisted when the tubes
rotate.
The tube inside the Pinion 5 (2) passes through the bearing and opens to the
Conical guide (4). The Conical guide (4) is stationery. There are two conical

guides, each receiving the twisted leaves coming through the tube inside Pinion
5(2).
The two streams of twisted leaves passes through a common conical guide and
enter inside the Rotating pipe (6). Inside the Rotating pipe (6) they form one
rope. The twisting continues because of the rotation of the Rotating pipe (6).
From the rotating pipe (6) of the rope comes out through an opening on the
side. It passes through Pin (13) and get wound on the Bobbin (8). The Pin (13)
is attached on the Latai (7). Latai (7) rotates along with the Rotating pipe (6).
Gear 7 (9), Latai (7) and Rotating pipe (6) are integral and rotate as one body.
The rope gets wound on the Bobbin (8). The rotational speed of the Bobbin (8)
and of the Rotating pipe (6) are different because of the winding of the rope on
the Bobbin (8), the streams of leaves fed at the Feed inlet (1) are sucked in by
the machine itself. Hence, the leaves are fed upto the vane inside the pipe inside
the Pinion 5 (2), it is then pulled in by the machine itself. The machine is stopped
after some time and the rope is taken out.
