Abstract: The present invention provides an improved process for preparation of anastrozole wherein the said process comprises of, a) reacting α, α, α’, α’-tetramethyl-5-bromomethyl-1,3-benzenediacetonitrile with sodium 1,2,4-triazole, b) isolating the anastrozole from the reacting mass thereof.
