FIKLIJ OF INVENTION
This invention relates to an improved ring gasket less prone to falling and for
•case of assembly. The ring gasket is implemented for joint of two pipe flange
assembly to prevent leakage of fluid therefrom.
BACKGROUND /PRIOR ART
A metallic ring gasket is employed for joining two metallic pipe flange assembly
for prevention of leakage from said pipes. In this regard reference rnay.be made
to figl, wherein a metallic ring gasket (1) is placed between two metallic pipes
(2, 3) assembled with flange (2' 3') around circumference thereof. One pipe (3)
is provided with two bolts (Bi, B2) and another pipe (2) is provided with
corresponding Nuts (Ni, N2) diametrically opposite in the flange. Either Nuts or
bolts are welded with the flange.
The ring is assembled onto protruded pipe (3) which can be any of the two
pipes. This forms ring gasket assembly on flange pipe joint as shown in fig 2
indicating bolt-nut fastener (N2, B2) and gasket (1). Following assembly the ring
is crushed between two pipe flange assembly to fill the clearance therebetween
for accomplishment of effective sealing against any leakage of fluid from the
pipes. Thus, the ring gasket is placed between the joint of two pipe flange
assembly so as to ensure sealing at the joint. The ring gasket is having a
circular cross section with a filler material (F) caulked inside, as in fig 2A.

The ring gasket is diametrically inserted over the pipe and the two flanges are
then tightened with fasteners, thereby crushing the ring gasket therebetween,
so that it forms a seal between said two flanges. However due to the tolerances.
between the pipe outer diameter and the gasket inner diameter, during the
gasket insertion, it is highly possible for the gasket, to either make a diametric
clearance (looseness) with the pipe which may result in the falling of the gasket
from the pipe in the course of assembly of the flange joint, alternatively make
the gasket fitment hard for insertion (tightness) on the pipe by manual effort
leading to operator fatigue. This, can be best seen in fig 3, in which it is loose
enough to fall or tight enough for hard fitment. Further reference may be made
to fig 3A and fig 3B indicating the condition of gasket falling down (Dl) and
gasket not fitting (D2).
The aforesaid drawbacks can be briefly listed hereinunder:-
In case gasket is creating a clearance fit with pipe, it is possible for the
gasket to fall down during, the course of assembly. This can result in
tightening of pipe joint without gasket which can cause leakage.
- In case the gasket internal diameter is provided at minimum tolerance
and pipe outer diameter is at maximum tolerance, it becomes very hard .
for the operator to fit the gasket, thereby causing fatigue to operator.
In order to address the aforesaid shortcomings of prior art, the present _
invention proposes an improved ring gasket which is less prone to falling and
for case of assembly as well.
Some known patents/publications may be discussed hereinbelow.

IJB3278883. It is directed to combined gasket and grounding device for
bushings. The combination gasket and grounding means comprises a pair of
ring shaped gasket members with a conductive ring shaped member
therebetween. There is provision of a conductive grounding strap which
extends from the inner edge of the conductive member with inner and outer
flanges- below the lower gasket member. This grounding strap is adapted for
connection to a grounded portion of an electrical apparatus.
A prior art is known to be available in respect of a gasket less prone to falling
which comprises a gasket body with a plurality of protrusions on at least one
end face thereof made of flexible materials. The upper ends of the protrusions
are open, and the lower ends of protrusions are closed. The upper end face and
the lower and face consist of coaxial round surfaces, in which the diameter of
the upper end face is larger than that of the lower end face, and the lower end
face is embedded in the gasket body. During use of the gasket, air in the
protrusions is compressed, and pressure difference outside and inside the
gasket can firmly fix a connector, so that the gasket is not easy to lose and fall.
Another known art teaches regarding a toric ultraflexible gasket to ensure
imperviousness between two mediums with different temperatures, wherein
these two mediums are delimited by two walls with a space therebetween. Said
gasket: comprising: a ring-shaped flexible strip with a determined width larger
than the width of said space. There is a ring-shaped internal casing within a
central portion of said flexible strip; and a rigid external casing surrounding
said central portion of said flexible strip such that end portions of said flexible
strip form two impervious extremities which are radially deformed in the space.
The flexible strip consists of inner and outer elements, wherein said inner
-5-
clcmcnt is located at a radially inner side of said internal casing and said outer
clement is placed at a radially outer side of said internal casing. The inner and
outer elements each having a bulged central portion to surround said internal
casing and end portions to constitute the twu impervious extx^emities of the
.flexible, strip.
Also there is disclosure of a joint between two mediums with different
temperatures comprising: a first fixed part centered about a longitudinal axis
arid having a longitudinally facing first surface. There is provision of a second
fixed part centered about said longitudinal axis and having a longitudinally
facing second surface. Both the surfaces face each other with a space
therebetween. In addition to the above, there is provided a toric ultraflexible
gasket including a generally ring-shaped flexible strip centered about said
longitudinal axis and having a longitudinal length larger than the longitudinal
length of said space. Said flexible strip is formed by separate inner and outer
elements. The inner element is located radially inside said outer element,
wherein a ring-shaped internal casing remains at a central portion of said
flexible strip and between said inner and outer elements, and a rigid external
casing surrounds said central portion of said flexible strip such that end
portions of said flexible strip form first and second impervious extremities. Said
first impervious extremity engages with said first surface and radially deformed
thereby and said second impervious extremity is engaged with said second
surface and radially deformed thereby.

UKTAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE
ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
The invention makes a disclosure relating to an improved ring gasket, which is
less prone to falling and for ease in assembly. The ring is formed from a
metallic sheet with filler material thereon, which is rolled to form a ring shaped
gasket. The sheet metal is integrated to atleast one strip at one end to obtain
said ring gasket with the strip along internal diameter thereof which is
illustrated in fig. 4 indicating ring (1) with strip (2).
-8-
The gasket is cut/stamped out from the sheet metal with atleast one small
flexible strip at one end. The strip (2) may be of any desired shape preferably
rectangular. The strip is curved which is rolled around the ring to exert spring
back pressure on the pipe surface thereby fixing the gasket to pipe during
assembly as in fig. 5A and 5B. Thue, the gasket i3 sustained in pusition by
means of the support strip in proper contact with the protruded outer surface
of pipe.
According to another embodiment, the strip(S) can be present in plural as seen
in fig. 6. The multitude of strips can be symmetrical/asymmetrical with respect
to each other regarding shape /size. The strip is positioned along internal
diameter of ring gasket.
Thus the novel gasket has been devised by providing an additional support
strip or 'n' number of strips to a ring gasket wherein the strip(S) always exerts
a spring back force on the pipe during assembly. This restrains the gasket from
falling off owing to constant contact between the gasket and pipe.
In conjunction with the above, this gasket internal diameter (ID) is modified
such that there is required clearance fit between the pipe outer diameter and
gasket internal diameter. The internal diameter of ring gasket is for example .
T3+0.5' to 'D+1.5' as compared to prior gasket internal diameter tolerance of 'D'
to D I 1.5'. Thus the internal diameter tolerance of ring gasket is incremented by
0.5' accordingly to an exemplary embodiment without restricting ambit of the
invention to the same.

The above provision is made to ensure ease of assembly during insertion.
The ring gasket of instant invention can obviate the drawbacks of known art
without compromising in sealing performance.
The material can be any metal such as Steel, Copper. However, the material of
pipes, flanges and ring should be same like steel in case it.is employed as
exhaust pipe.
The material of ring can be different from that of pipe flange assembly which
depends on the application area and also properties of fluid flowing through
pipe. The gasket can be manufactured by roll forming method without
restricting scope of the invention to the same.
Thus other suitable materials/method readily apparent to a person skilled in
the art are understood to be within perview of the invention.

- Ease of assembly for operator.
Sustaining the gasket in proper position during assembly with pipes.
Less time consuming assembly, (improved tact time)
No compromises in sealing performance.
It is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications,
adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant embodiments
