Specification

This invention is directed to an injector coupler tool for ergonomic assembly of
electric coupler(s) on fuel injector(s).
ACKGROUND/PRIOR ART
Vliring harness coupler (electric couplers) is assembled on fuel injector to
provide electrical connection to the fuel injector for injecting fuel into the
combustion chamber.
In mass production, electric couplers are assembled on fuel injector by
assembly operator with hand.
In MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection) technology, fuel injectors are not very close
. .
to combustion chamber and therefore fuel injectors are clearly visible for the
couphng of electric couplers. Therefore coupling of electric coupler with"injector
~an be carried out easily without the issues of ergonomics and also without
hurting the .user's hand due to interference with the adjacent parts.
In order to increase fuel efficiency and meet strict emission norms,GDI
(Gasoline Direct Injection) technology and downsizing of engines is required,
which necessitates placement of said injectors directly on the combustion
chamber.
However, due to the proximity to combustion chamber the coupling with
injector is difficult because adjacent parts cause interference with user's hand.
This may hurt user's hand and ergonomic assembly criteria is not met (User
. may bend). This also consumes more time for assembly as user is· required to
locate it. Thus due to space constraint, operator finds difficulty to insert hand
for assembling electric couplers. This leads to fouling of operator's hand with
peripheral components, which may hurt operator's hand and even increase in
cycle time.

In order to addres::; the aforesaid issues, present invention has been introduced
by devising a novel injector coupler tool.

the prior art (s).
Another object of this invention lS to propose an injector coupler tool for
ergonomic assembly of electric coupler(s) on fuel injector(s)which avoids
chances of fouling of operator's hand with adjacent parts.
Further object of this invention is to propose an injector coupler tool for
ergonomic assembly of electric coupler(s) on fuel injector(s) which results in
improved cycle time and ease in assembly.
Yet another object of this invention is to propose an injector coupler tool for
ergonomic assembly of electric coupler(s) on fuel injector(s) which does not
involve any issues of ergonomics.

,DETAiL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE
ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
The instant invention discloses an injector coupler tool for ergonomic assembly
of electric coupler(s) on fuel injector(s).
!n th1s regard, reference may be made to fig 1 wherein the tool constitutes a
single piece including a handle (1) integrated to a curved part (2) having a
substantially U jC section without restricting scope of the invention to the
same. Said curved part comprises atleast two arms (3, 4) maintaining a gap
therebetween as shown. The arm (3, 4) ends with a coupling means (5) having a
plurality of fingers (F) for coupling with the electric coupler (fig 2). The tool and
coupler is illustrated in fig 3A and 3B in assembly condition and in the
assembled condition.
The gap between the two arms creates a hollow space, which is employed to
accommodate the parts between two injectors during assembly thereby
avoiding fouling with said ·tool.
The profile of the coupling means participating in coupling corresponds to that
of the coupler slot(S).
According to another embodiment as best seen in fig 4, the coupling means (5)
is integrated to side fingers (F'). Here, the coupling mea11:s (5) takes part in the
.coupling and the side fingers (F') act as a guide for the coupler while coupling.
For the assembly and assembled form of this embodiment, reference may be
made to fig SA and SB. The curved part with U-section and C-section is
illustrated in fig SC and SD respectively.
The above discussed tool with dual arms IS implemented for two injectors
sirnultC;lneously. However, for assembly of coupler on a single fuel injector a

separate tool as in fig 6 is provided relying on the same concept. Thi·s tool
comprises a handle (lA) ending with a coupling means (2A) having multitude·of
fingers as already discussed. This tool with coupler in assembly condition and
in assembled condition is depicted in fig 6A and 6B.
Tn accordance with another embodiment, the tool for a single injector forms a
smgle arm (3) ending with coupling means (5) as in fig 1.
According to yet another embodiment, the tool in provided to couple with three
electric couplers simultaneously. In this respect, reference may be made to fig
7 in which the tool is having a hp_ndle (lB) integrated to a curved part (U /C
section) (C) comprising of three arms (2B) ending with coupling means (3B) and
side fingers (4B). There is a gap between two adjacent arms to accommodate
the parts between injectors in the course of assembly. The tool is a single
str11cture.
As already mentioned in case of other embodiments hereinabove, the tool can
be devised without the side fingers (not shown) as well.
Now reference may be made to fig 7 A and 7B for assembly condition and
assembled condition.
This further helps in cycle time reduction.
The tool of preserit invention is · made of plastic (Nylon) by the method of
injection molding. However, other materials and methods readily apparent to a
person skilled in the art are understood to be within ambit of the invention.
During operation, two electric couplers are firstly inserted in injector coupler
tool at location (5). Operator holds the injector coupler from location (1) and
· guides the tool to assemble electric couplers on fuel injectors. The injector
coupler tool is designed in such a way that the disassembly force of electric

coupler on fuel injector is more than disassembly force of injector coupler tool
with the electric coupler. This results in easy disassembly of injector coupler
tool from electric coupler when operator pulls back the tool.
Advantageous Features
Easy and e:rgonomic assembly of electric coupler on fuel injector.
Avoids fouling of operator's hand with adjacent ·parts, thereby avoiding
any injury to operator.
Improvement in cycle time owmg to simultaneous assembly of
twin/ multiple injector couplers.
It is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications,
adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant embodiments
employing the concepts and features of this invention are intended to be within
the scope of the present invention, which is further set forth under the
