The present invention relates to a composition used for de oxidation of steel. More particularly, the present invention relates to the deoxidizing composition which comprises CaC2, SiO2, AI2O3, CaO, Fe2O3 etc in particular ratio. Moreover this invention relates to the deoxidizing composition which removes oxygen from steel. Moreover this invention relates to the process for removal of oxygen by using deoxidizer composition.
Background of the invention and related prior Art
Deoxidation of steel is a steel making technological operation, in which concentration (activity) of oxygen dissolved in molten steel is reduced to a required level. At present steel industries use deoxidizers for removal of oxygen from the steel. The main sources of oxygen in steel are follows:
• Oxygen blowing in vessel
• Atmospheric oxygen dissolving in liquid steel during pouring operations
• Oxidizing refractory(lining of furnace)
• Rusted scrap
Oxygen is injected in hot metal during blowing operation in vessel to convert hot metal into steel. Oxygen removes impurities of steel such as silicon and phosphorus and helps in lowering carbon. All impurities are converted into oxides and removed as slag from
the top. The total oxygen present in steel is in form of oxides and dissolved oxygen.
Oxygen present in the steel in form of oxides forms non metallic inclusions entrapped within the structure which adversely affect the steel quality.
The present invention relates to deoxidizer that has been invented and used as an effective deoxidizer used for steel. Various kinds of deoxidizers are used today for bath killing like aluminium, calcium silicide, ferro silicon, etc. which is costly compounds and can form metallic inclusions. The process of the prior art is therefore more costly and less quality centric.

b) Slag off to be done if required;
c) Blowing of oxygen in furnace to achieve desired level of carbon, phosphorus and silica;
d) Removal of slag generated;
e) Tapping of steel from furnace to ladle;
f) Addition of deoxidizer composition along with other alloys during tapping;
g) Measurement of oxygen ppm in bath.
Other objects of the present invention, together with means and methods for attaining
the various objects, will become apparent from the following description and the
accompanying drawings of preferred embodiments.
Novelty of this instant invention lies on the deoxidizer composition. The invention itself, additional objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood from the following description of certain specific embodiments, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 Illustrates the Pictorial representation of addition of deoxidizer FIG. 2 Illustrates the oxygen ppm levels after addition of deoxidizer composition FIG. 3 Illustrates flow chart of the Process of deoxidation through blowing vessel and the invention to be used within the process;
During the tapping additions deoxidizer composition is been used wherein CaC2 is 54-
58%, CaO is 20-30% , Si02 is 1-4%, CaF2 is 0.5-1.5% , A1203 is 1-3%, Ti is 0.2-
0.5%, Si is 5-10% , C is 1-2%, Fe203 is 0.05-0.01 , MgO is 0.02-0.04 and LOI 1-2% in
particular ratio.
All the above ingredients are less than 1mm in size.
The compound is in the form of powder, packed in air tight sealed bags kept in drums
for additional safety.
When compound is added during tapping it reacts with the oxygen present in steel to
form oxides which are removed during slag raking.
Basic reaction principle:
CaC2 =>Ca+ 2C
Ca+O => CaO
C+O =>CO
Si+2O => SiO2
C+O => CO
Ti+2[0] => TiO2
CaC2 +S => CaS +2C
The deoxidation of steel with dissolved oxygen is done by addition of deoxidizer during
tapping of the steel to ladle. To remove the oxygen this compound is added during
tapping through a chute to achieve a continuous mix. The amount of compound added
depends on the metal carrying capacity of vessel and concentration of oxygen in steel
which is designed experimentally. The material mixes with the steel and reacts with the
oxygen. Finally slag containing oxides is skimmed out through raking process. The
compound can reduce sulphur 2-4 points and has slag fluidizers which will help in formation of thin slag.
The deoxidizer of the present invention is tested and result is given below-
Figure 2 shows the trend of temperature drop of new compound vs existing soda ash being used as slag deoxidizer. It is evident that the temperature drop is less in case of new compound when the addition of compound is kept 0.0055-0.0067% of the total hot metal weight.
The slag deoxidizer has advantage over soda ash as follows:
