Specification

The present invention relates to an open gill type single roller gill box for
processing long textile fibres in a textile drawing machine. More particularly this invention
pertain to a single roller type open gill box without faller guides capable of handling long
fibres like jute, sisal, hemp and the like reducing the possibility of entanglement or
impediment of operation in a textile drawing unit as used, for instance, in jute processing.
Processing of raw fibre through different stages up to the step of spinning
necessitates use of different types of machineries. Drawing machine is one such machine
which performs a number of important functions, namely, combing, ensures separation of
fibres from entangled condition to prepare sliver or bunch of fibres suitable for spinning. A
plurality of such drawing machine varying from two to five or even more in number of
different specifications may be used to process different types of fibres. It is to be borne in
mind that raw fibres like jute has long, coarse fibres, both light and heavy, often in entangled
condition and smeared with clay and / or dust, contaminated at the time of drying and
subsequent baling.
Different types of gill boxes have been and are being used in the industry for
drawing machine / draw frames for preparing sliver suitable for spinning. Almost all the
varieties so far used in the industry are equipped with faller guides, except the multi roller
type intersecting gill box. The different types of gill boxes are briefly mentioned below :-
i) open gill push bar type
ii) open gill screw type
iii) intersecting gill, screw type
iv) intersecting gill chain type
v) open gill rotary type
vi) intersecting gill, rotary type
vii) intersecting gill, multi roller type

As mentioned above, the multi roller type intersecting gill does not employ faller
guides.
All the existing models of gill box with faller guides suffer from speed
limitation due to obstruction in movement of fallers or pinned bars by the said faller guides
which are meant for ensuring better pin penetration of the sliver into the faller pins and
holding of the sliver by means of the pins throughout the gill box. However, such faller
guides apart from having limitation of speed, also need special maintenance and cleaning in
view of the complicated system. Moreover, such maintenance and cleaning procedures are
necessary at regular intervals for maintaining a clean working environment inside the factory
premises.
The existing models of multi roller type intersecting gill box does not suffer
from limitation of speed as they do not have any faller guides, but the system is not capable
of holding the sliver inside the pins throughout the gill box. The pin projections are also very
low, which are often incapable of accommodating thick and coarse sliver inside the pins of
the gill box and is a major drawback of such machines as it does not serve like purpose
properly and satisfactorily. In other words, the gill box and pin projections are too small to
accommodate thick and coarse sliver.
The present invention aims at addressing the difficulties inherent in the
machines now in use by coming up with an improved, yet simple system to obviate such
difficulties.
The principal object of this invention to provide an open gill type single roller
gill box which does not have any limitation of speed.

A further object of this invention is to provide a single roller gill box without
faller guides to ensures freedom from speed limitation, holding of sliver inside the pins
throughout the gill box.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a single roller gill box,
equipped with apart from feeding or retaining and drawing rollers, a sliver pressing roller
placed inside the faller pins.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved single roller gill
box without faller guides wherein surface speed of rotation of faller pins matches the
rotational surface speed of the sliver pressing roller top.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide an improved single roller gill
box without faller guides wherein said sliver pressing roller presses the sliver inside the faller
pins without touching said pins at any given speed and does not permit the sliver to float over
the faller pins, thereby keeping the sliver inside the faller pins throughout its passage through
gill box.
The forgoing objects are achieved by the present invention which provides an
open gill type single roller gill box for processing long textile fibres in a textile drawing
machine by drafting and combing, characterized in that said gill box comprises :
(a) a combination of pressing roller and back retaining roller rotating in mutually
opposite directions through which the sliver of textile material is introduced ;
(b) a combination of pressing roller and front retaining roller moving in opposite
directions through which said sliver passes over a slotted drum carrying plurality of
faller bars and faller pins but without faller guides, wherein the sliver is freed from

impediments like knots, entanglements, dusts, etc., which might create problems in
subsequent stages of operation ;
(c) a sliver pressing roller rotating in the same direction as the pressing roller and front
retaining roller which presses the sliver inside the faller pins without touching said
pins, and
(d) a plurality of smaller rollers like nip roller and drawing roller moving in directions
opposite to the direction of rotation of a rubber pressing roller which combination of
rollers brings about ejection / drawing out of textile sliver in operable condition.
The drum for faller bar has evenly spaced slanting slots or housings on the
surface thereof for holding plurality of faller bars equipped with faller pins, which may be
detachably held / affixed onto the said faller bars.
The sliver pressing roller referred to above is placed inside the faller pins and
the surface speed of rotation of faller pins matches the rotational surface speed of the sliver
pressing roller top. Such an arrangement does not allow the sliver to float over the faller pins
and the sliver is kept / held inside the faller pins throughout its passage through the gill box.
The invention will now be described with the help of the accompanying
drawings in which Figs. 1 to 7 show the different types of gill boxes now in use and Fig. 8
illustrates the single roller type open gill box without faller bar of the present invention.
Drawings shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11 represent the sectional views of the important
components of the gill box of the present invention.
The drawings are described below in greater details :

Fig.1 shows an open pushbar type gill box in which the sliver (1) goes round
retaining roller (2) and jockey roller feed pressing roller (3), passing through the pins of the
carrier wheel (4) and finally going out after passing between a drawing roller (5) and a
pressing roller (6). Such gill boxes also employ faller guides.
Fig. 2 shows an open screw gill type gill box with faller guides in which the
incoming sliver (1) passes through a set of retaining rollers (2) and a jockey roller (3), then
over gill pins (7) with holders therefor (8), and finally going out through a pair of drawing
roller (5) and a pressing roller (6) rotating in mutually opposite directions.
Fig. 3 depicts an intersecting screw gill type gill box with faller guides wherein (9)
stands for the intersecting screw, and numerals (1), (2), (3), (5) and (6) have the same
significance as given above.
Fig. 4 shows an intersecting chain gill type gill box employing faller guides wherein
intersecting chains are designated by (10) which carry pin-like bodies and the sliver (1) is
made to pass through these intersecting chains, and numerals (1), (2), (3), (5) and (6)
designate the parts as named earlier.
Fig. 5 illustrates an open rotary type gill box with faller guides which has a rotary
wheel (12) carrying faller pins (11) and operating in a fixed inner track (13). The path of
movement of sliver and directions of rotations of various rollers are shown by means of
arrow heads, numerals (1), (2), (3) and (5) having the same significance as given
hereinbefore. A rubber pressing roller (14) having a substantially larger diameter rotating in a
direction opposite to drawing roller (5) ensures easy egress of the sliver (1).

Fig. 6 shows an intersecting rotary gill type gill box with faller guides, having two
rotating gills (15) moving in opposite directions and equipped with pins (11), through which
passes the sliver. Two sets of rollers ensure ingress and egress of the sliver, and numerals (1),
(2), (3), (5) and (6) denote the same objects / parts as already shown.
Fig. 7 depicts an intersecting multi roller type gill box without faller bar and guides
which employs four rollers of larger diameter (16) and two rollers of relatively smaller
diameter in pairs, all of them carrying cogs and/or serrated spiky bodies. Two pairs of larger
toothed rollers and one pair of toothed smaller rollers are deployed through which passes the
sliver. Numerals (1), (2), (3), (5) and (6) denote the same components as shown above.
Fig. 8 shows a single roller type open gill box without faller guides which employs
three different sets of rollers for smooth ingress and egress of the sliver along the path shown

faller bar (17) having slots or housings for accommodating a plurality of faller bars (18)
equipped with faller pins (11), said pins being detachably mounted on the said faller bars.
The deployment of different rollers according to the present system has not been envisaged
before.
Another notable feature of the apparatus / system of this invention is the sliver
pressing roller (19) placed inside the faller pins which holds the sliver inside the said pins and
prevents the sliver to float over the faller pins and the nip roller designated by (20).
Components / parts designated by numerals (1), (2), (3), (5), and (14) indicate
the same parts as narrated before.

Fig. 9 shows a plan view of components like pressing roller (6), rubber pressing
roller (14), faller pins (11) on the slotted drums for faller bar (17), sliver processing roller
(19), and the feed sliver (1) along with delivered sliver (21).
Fig, 10 shows a cross-sectional representations of sliver pressing roller assembly (19),
in which grooved rollers (22) and a pair of rubber pulleys (23) have been depicted.
Fig. 11 illustrates a sectional drawing of the slotted drum assembly (17) with faller
bar pin (11), faller bar (18) and gear (24) for regulating the movement of the assembly.
The apparatus and components thereof are fabricated from materials
available in the open market. Such fabrication does not necessitate use of sophisticated or
imported machineries. The components are easy to assemble and the finished apparatus is
extremely user friendly, apart from being cost effective. Moreover, the invented machine
enables use of coarse and thick sliver, a feature not encountered before. Operation of the
