Abstract: The present invention provides an organic tanning agent composition and a process for preparing tanning agent composition and process for applying tanning agent composition for tanning of pickled pelt of hides/skins (leather). Particularly, the present invention relates to a composition containing higher concentrations of 2, 3-dihydroxypropanal commonly known as glyceraldehyde as the active tanning components, along with other organic additives such as various cross-linkers. The active ingredient glyceraldehyde is prepared in situ by substantial / near complete oxidation of glycerin. The invention relates to a novel tanning agent composition from organic resources, devoid of inorganic metals, employed in the tanning of hide/skin. The invention also pertains to a tanning process for eco-benign leather processing
