Angle Setting And Holding Fixture For Laser Beam Welding

Abstract: A method and apparatus for laser beam welding. The present improved invention is a fixture that holds and positions the thin sheet metal work pieces at a particular accurate angle during welding and holding of one work piece that rotates easily between two welded work pieces after laser beam welding.

Specification

Present invention relates to the bonding of thin sheet metal work pieces.
More particularly, it relates to laser beam welding of two thin metal work pieces at
a predefined accurate angle under commercial manufacturing condition. The
10 fixture facilitates accurate dimensional control during and after laser beam
welding and the correct matching of the surfaces of the work pieces after laser
beam welding. Fixture also support and position another work piece, sandwiched
between two welded work piece and rotated freely between welded work pieces
after welding.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Laser welding offers several advantages over other type of welding
specifically, it offers excellent precision welds with a minimum heat-zone which
20 allows welding near heat-sensitive zone of the work piece.
Laser welding is non-contact method of welding which prevents tool wear
and also enables welding without application of a mechanical load on the work
piece. Moreover, it is highly reproducible and creates a weld with clean
appearance. Laser welding is used for a wide variety of application, including
25 automotive, micro technology, telecommunication, packing and medical devices.
The present improved invention is a fixture that holds and positions the thin
sheet metal work pieces at a particular accurate angle during welding and
positioning and holding one work piece that is easily rotates between two welded
work pieces after laser welding.
30 Correct matching of the surfaces of the work pieces welded plays an
important role to get the proper shape of the assembly after laser beam welding.
to achieve this purpose, the arrangement are made in laser beam welding fixture
for automatic matching of work piece surface.

SUMMARY OF PRESENT INVENTION
In accordance with one aspect of present invention is to provide a fixture
that facilitates angle setting, holding and positioning 5 ing of thin metal work pieces
welded in laser beam welding operation.
In accordance with second aspect of present invention is to provide a
fixture for laser beam welding operation for accurate positioning of work pieces
on fixture.
10 In accordance with another aspect of present invention is to provide a
fixture for laser beam welding operation having a locating pin to position the work
piece in fixture with respect to Dialling face.
In accordance with yet another aspect of present invention is to provide a
fixture for laser beam welding operation adapted to be placed on laser beam
15 welding machine.
In accordance with another aspect of present invention is to provide a
lighter fixture to hold the thin metal sheet work pieces.
In accordance with yet another aspect of present invention is to provide a
fixture for laser beam welding operation that can be properly and effectively
20 utilized to hold, position and angular setting of work pieces during laser beam
welding by lesser skilled individuals.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Referring Fig.1, Fig.2, Fig.3 & Fig.4 the present invention is an improved
fixture 18 that holds and positions the thin sheet metal work pieces 5 at a particular
accurate angle during laser beam welding with the correct matching of surface of
work piece welded to get the assembly in proper shape. One such assembly is
showed in fig. 4.
Fixture 18 for laser beam welding comprises a Base Plate 1 made of EN8,
10 having grind top surface A and bottom surface B. Surface A and surface B are
parallel to each other within 0.010 mm to maintain the parallelism of top surface
A with respect to machine bed 20. Surface B rest on the laser beam welding
machine bed 20 and attached to the machine bed 20 with the help of two slots
19, which are fabricated in Base plate 1.
15 Fixture 18 for laser beam welding comprises a support block 2 made of
EN31, hardened and grind to 50-55RC, fixed on the surface A of Base Plate 1
with Allen head screw 7 & dowel pin 6.support block houses the Position Pin 3
and two guide pins 10 to position and hold the work piece in place & also have a
stepped shape to provide proper position to the work piece.
20 Position Pin 3 made of EN31, hardened and grind to 50-55RC, position
the work piece 15 at predetermined accurate position. Position pin has sliding fit
with hole provided in support block 2.
Fixture 18 for laser beam welding comprises a locating Pin 4 which is fixed
on the surface A of the base plate 1 through the hole made in base plate 1.
25 Locating pin 4 locates the work piece 15.A chain 8 which is attached with the
base plate 1 by Cheese Head Screw and holds the position pin 3.
Two guide pin 10 are fixed on the surface D of the Support Block 2, which
positioned the work piece 17 at predefined angle. Block 12 made of EN8 fixed on
the surface A of Base Plate 1 with Allen screw 13 & dowel pin 14 which
30 positioned the work piece 16.
Dialing face C in base plate 1 used as a datum for the manufacturing of
fixture 18 to maintain the position of all the items as describe above with in the
geometrical tolerance .This dialing face C is used to position the fixture parallel to
35 any one axis of the laser beam welding machine.

1. A fixture that holds and positions the thin sheet metal work pieces at a particular accurate angle during laser beam welding and adapted to be positioned on work table of laser beam welding machine. The angle setting and holding fixture for laser beam welding comprising
- Base plate adapted to be fixed to the bed of laser beam welding machine and provides base surface to other sub component of fixture.
- Position pin that restrict the rotational movement of the work piece
- Location Pin that locates and position the work piece to be weld by laser beam welding.
- Two guiding pins are provided on the support block to provide the accurate angular position to one of the work piece with respect to other work piece to be welded.
2. The fixture for angle setting and holding of work piece for laser beam welding of claim 1 wherein, top and bottom surfaces of the base plate are substantially flat and parallel.
3. The fixture for angle setting and holding of work piece for laser beam welding of claim 1 wherein, Support Block that position one of the work piece at predefined desired angle.
4. The fixture for angle setting and holding of work piece for laser beam welding of claim 1 wherein, locating pin fixed in the base plate and used to locate one of the work pieces to be laser welded.
5. The fixture for angle setting and holding of work piece for laser beam welding of claim 1 further comprising a Dialling face that provides reference edge for the other sub component of fixture. ,TagSPECI:As per Annexure-II
