Application Process And Tooling For Providing Polysulphide Sealant Material In A Confined Space

Abstract: This method brings into play while applying Polysulphide sealant material manually by the technicians in a very narrow/confined space. The Polysulphide sealant material application process requires skill, localized illumination, in order to apply the sealant effectively to prevent any fuel leaks . Since the Polysulphide sealant material application generates flammable fumes , proper ventilation / air circulation to be provided in order to prevent fire accidents , operator & aircraft safety. In order to achieve this, compressed air was used with very low pressure to provide air shower at the application area to dilute / remove the accumulated dense flammable fumes generated out from the Polysulphide sealant material. Due to the positive pressure created at the application area, the fumes become diluted & even if it comes in contact with the hot surface they are not able to produce any fire which in turn prevents the fire accidents. This unique method is very much useful to prevent fire accidents which in turn saves the life of the technicians and prevent damages to the Aircrafts.

Specification

1. Title of the invention
Application process and tooling for providing Polysulphide sealant material in a confined space.
2. Field of invention
This invention is related to the application of Polysulphide sealant material manually by the technicians while overhauling of the Aircrafts. This invention is designed to prevent fire accidents and creating safe environment while applying Polysulphide sealant material in a confined space.
3. Use of invention
This invention is used to prevent fire accidents and to provide safety to the personnel while using Polysulphide sealant material in the confined working place.
4. Prior art
Many a times mild explosions have occurred during the Polysulphide sealant material application in the confined space. Inside the fuel tank there is no scope for ventilation. The specific chemical is highly inflammable with a flash point of -4 degree Celsius. Application invariably produces vapor which can explode if the concentration reach the requisite proportion. Workmen assigned were using required personal protection gear like respirator, gloves etc.
5. Draw backs of prior art
No prior warning/ precaution was available to prevent the accidents from happening. The low flash point and usage of inspection lamps used inside the confined space enhanced the risk.
6. Comparison between prior art and present invention
The new method ensured that the inflammable vapor and oxygen never allowed to become an explosive mixture by continuously flushing the fuel vapor from the confined space.

7. Aim of the invention
Aim of the invention was to develop an.effective, efficient and safe method to apply the Polysulphide sealant material in a confined space without causing any damages to the property, personnel during the application process.
8. Summary of the present invention
The Polysulphide sealant material need to be applied at different confined space/locations of the Aircrafts. The locations of the application is mostly inside the fuel tank (Fl, F2,F3 & F4 tanks) of the Aircraft where the illumination is blocked, very little space to manoeuvre, in addition absolutely no possibility of natural ventilation. Vapour is generated during application of Polysulphide sealant material. In absence of ventilation, vapour accumulate inside the confined space. This at times reach the required proportion for being an explosive mixture. Being a flammable vapour with sub zero flash point, slightest spark, either from the Electric lamp or from the static electricity can result in an explosion/fire, resulting in injury to the technicians and damage to the Aircraft.
In order to prevent this, a special air circulation system was designed as shown in the diagrams given below by using Compressed air at a very low pressure. The skid type arrangement was fabricated by using below items:-
a. Ball valve - to open/close the air entry from the main air supply line.
b. Air filter with Regulator & pressure gauge (0-10 Bar) to control the air pressure at the
secondary (outlet) side to the required pressure by adjusting the regulator.
c. Hand held air shower (similar to bath shower) to provide air curtain.
All the above items are mounted on a metallic/ply wood sheet by using Quick release couplings so that the unit can be easily positioned at the designated locations at the time of applying the Polysulphide sealant material by the technicians.
While applying the Polysulphide sealant material , technician has to open the inlet air valve. The pressure of the air will be set at very low pressure ( 0.2 bar to 0.3 bar). The hand shower with extended hose, long enough to place the shower inside the confined space, make the air shower flush the inflammable vapour. Thus the chances of any fire hbz&d is completely eliminated.

9. Brief description of drawings
FIG.l is a perspective view of the Aircraft where Polysulphide sealant material application will be carried out.
FIG.2 Illustrates different components used for supplying compressed air supply to the confined space.
FIG.A Illustrates the Air Regulator, Hose , Air shower & QRC couplings in assembled condition.
FIG.B Illustrates Air Regulator with QRC fitting.
FIB.C Illustrates Air shower hose .
10. Statement of invention
This new method is much useful for applying the Polysulphide sealant material in confined space where there is lack of air circulation. This method provides safety to the technicians & prevents fire hazards.
11. Detailed description of invention
a) Polysulphide sealant material need to be applied manually at different locations of the Aircraft viz., cockpit area, wings, fuel tanks etc to prevent fuel leakages.
b) Positioning of the local compressed air supply system near the Polysulphide sealant material application area.
c) Connecting the compressed air hose from the header to the local air supply system thru quick release couplings.
d) Open the inlet air valve and position/hold the air shower to the Polysulphide sealant material application area.
e) Set the pressure at 0.2 to 0.3 bar and let the sir shower flush the confined space before Polysulphide sealant material application and throughout the application process.
f) After completion of the Polysulphide sealant material application, allow the compressed air to flow for 5 to 10 minutes to remove all the fumes from the location. Afterwards, cwDserttie air supply valve.
