Arsenic Removal Adsorbent For Treating Contaminated Water And A Process Of Preparation Thereof

Abstract: The invention relates to the process for the preparation of a novel filtering media / sorbent for the removal of arsenic from contaminated water. This method is used for application in water treatment for drinking purpose in commercial, industrial and municipal installations. The filtering media/sorbent is prepared by depositing oxy- hydroxides of transition metals on a specially treated activated carbon. The preparation of this sorbent involves several steps comprising of activation of activated carbon with acid treatment, impregnation, precipitation deposition as hydroxides / oxy hydroxides / oxides of metals of which the iron – manganese combination was found to be most suitable in reducing arsenic from 200 ppb to less than 10 ppb level. A low temperature dried iron – manganese-based filtering media on acid treated activated carbon exhibited the highest adsorption capacity in continuous flow test
