Automatic Meter Reading Modem And Method Thereof

Abstract: An automatic meter reading modem and a method thereof are disclosed. In an example embodiment, the modem includes a micro-controller unit and a memory communicatively coupled to the micro-controller unit. The memory includes a firmware and multiple meter reading protocols. In an example, the micro-controller unit identifies a protocol associated with a meter connected to the modem. Further, the micro-controller unit automatically updates the firmware of the modem based on the identified protocol. Furthermore, the micro-controller unit read data from the meter upon automatically updating the firmware of the modem, the data includes a status of the meter and values in the meter.

Specification

Claims:1.An automatic meter reading modem, comprising:

a micro-controller unit; and

a memory communicatively coupled to the micro-controller unit, wherein the memory comprises a firmware and multiple meter reading protocols and wherein the micro-controller unit is configured to:
identify a protocol associated with a meter connected to the modem;

automatically update the firmware of the modem based on the identified protocol; and read data from the meter upon automatically updating the firmware of the modem,
wherein the data comprises a status of the meter and values in the meter.

2.The modem of claim 1, wherein the micro-controller unit is further configured to:

convert the data into a predefined data format associated with the modem; and

forward the data to a remote server to which the modem connects through a communication network.

3.The modem of claim 1, wherein the micro-controller unit is configured to:

select one of the multiple meter reading protocols based on the identified protocol; and automatically update the firmware of the modem with the selected one of the multiple meter
reading protocols.

4.The modem of claim 1, further comprising:

a display unit communicatively coupled to the micro-controller unit, wherein the micro- controller unit displays the data, status and ongoing processes of the modem on the display unit.

5.The modem of claim 1, wherein the micro-controller unit is further configured to:

identify a relation between a modem number and a mobile number provided by a service provider; and
automatically update network settings of the modem as per the service provider.

6. A method comprising:

identifying a protocol associated with a meter connected to a modem;

automatically updating a firmware of the modem based on the identified protocol; and reading data from the meter upon automatically updating the firmware of the modem,
wherein the data comprises a status of the meter and values in the meter.

7.The method of claim 6, further comprising:

converting the data into a predefined data format associated with the modem; and forwarding the data to a remote server to which modem connects through a communication network.

8.The method of claim 7, further comprising:

displaying the data, status and ongoing processes of the modem.

9.The method of claim 6, wherein automatically updating firmware of the modem based on the identified protocol, comprises:
selecting one of multiple meter reading protocols embedded in the modem based on the identified protocol; and
automatically updating the firmware of the modem with the selected one of the multiple

meter reading protocols.
