Automatic Waste Segregator

Abstract: The problem of waste management has become a major concern in India. A study says 1,60,000 metric tonnes is the amount of garbage India generates every day! Most of this is wet waste, which can be used to produce fertilizer and generate electricity. Studies say that waste which is segregated is very valuable which can be then used to produce fertilizers, generate biogas and electricity. Whereas, waste dumped unsorted in open, like it is done presently in India, produces harmful liquids and gases that spread diseases and also make that land barren on which it is dumped. So, effective and reliable waste management has become a need of the hour. The objective of this proposed project is to design a system to segregate the household waste into dry, wet and metallic waste. Waste is pushed through a flap into the proposed system. An IR proximity sensor detects this and starts the entire system. Waste then passes the metal detection system. This system is used to detect metallic waste. After this the object falls on the circular rotating disc. The waste is sensed by capacitive sensing module which determines the dry or waste wet based on its dielectric value. The circular disc then stops rotating and the waste is made to fall in the container of the corresponding garbage type.

THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION PARTICULARLY DESCRIBES THE NATURE OF THE INVENTION AND THE MANNER IN WHICH IT IS TO BE PERFORMED: -

FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
This invention relates to the field of Electronics, Electrical and Automation
engineering.
This invention is associated with waste segregation.
More particularly, this invention relates this invention relates to a system for
automatically segregate the waste into dry waste, wet waste and metallic waste. The
segregation is done electronically. The said system can be used at home for
segregating vegetable waste, household dry waste etc., it can also be used in industry
to segregate any particular type of waste.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
There is rapid increase in volume and types of solid and hazardous waste as result of continuous economic growth, urbanization and industrialization is becoming a big problem for national and local governments to ensure effective and sustainable management of waste.
The segregation, handling, transport and disposal of waste are to be properly managed so as to minimize the risks to the health and safety of patients, the public and the environment. The economic value of the waste is best realized when it is segregated.
PRIOR ART:
Currently there is no system of segregation of dry, wet and metallic wastes at a household level. The only available method is the manual segregation method which is a tedious, time-consuming method and also risks to human life. The purpose of this

project is the realization of a compact, automated segregation system for urban households to streamline the waste management process.
OBJECTIVE OF THE INVENTION:
The objectives object of the invention is
To design a system to segregate the household waste into diy, wet and metallic waste.. To make the system energy efficient by making it solar powered.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION:
This invention, is a system for to segregate the household waste into dry, wet and
metallic waste.
The system comprises of:
A IR sensor module to detect the incoming waste pushed through flap.
Electromagnet for detecting the metallic waste.
An IR sensor module to detect the waste stuck to the electromagnet.
Capacitive sensor and capacitance to digital converter to segregate the waste.
- A circular disc to dump the waste into the correct garbage bin.
- A solar power supply for powering the entire system.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS:
The invention will now be described in relation to the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Figure 1 illustrates the system's over all working model.
Figure 2 illustrates the block diagram of overall system.

Figure 3 illustrates the block diagram of system's solar power supply.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS:
The invention will now be described in relation to the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Reference numeral 1 relates to - Flap to push the waste into the waste segregator.
Reference numeral 2 relates to - IR sensor module to detect entry of waste into the segregator.
Reference numeral 3 relates to - Triangular sloping path from which the waste will slide downwards.
Reference numeral 4 relates to - Electromagnet to detect metal.
Reference numeral 5 relates to - Rotatable circular disk connected to stepper motor shaft.
Reference numeral 6 relates to - IR receiver of metallic waste bin.
Reference numeral 7 relates to — Metallic waste bin.
Reference numeral 8 relates to - IR receiver of wet waste bin.

Reference numeral 9 relates to - IR sensor module to detect the metallic waste stuck to
the electromagnet-.
Reference numeral 10 relates to - Mechanical actuator to dump the waste into the correct bin.
. Reference numeral 11 relates to - Capacitive sensing module connected to Capacitance to Digital Convertor.
Reference numeral 12 relates to - IR transmitter mounted on rotating circular disk.
Reference numeral 13 relates to - IR receiver of dry waste bin.
Waste is pushed through a flap into the proposed system. An IR proximity sensor detects this and starts the entire system.
The waste then falls on the metal detection system. This system is used to detect metallic waste. After this the object falls onto a rotating circular disc and is sensed by the capacitive proximity sensing module. This module distinguishes between wet and dry waste on the base of its dielectric value calculated from its proximity with sensor. After

the identification of waste, the circular disc which holds waste is tilted to fall the waste into the container corresponding to the type of garbage which is positioned under it. An 1R sensor module ensures that the circular disc outlet is properly positioned over correct corresponding garbage container. The waste in the containers now can be collected separately and sent for further processing.
. The novel features include:
A compact system for segregating the waste. An energy efficient solar powered system.
While this detailed description has disclosed certain specific embodiments of the present invention for illustrative purposes, various modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the following claims, and it is to be distinctly understood that the foregoing descriptive matter is to be interpreted merely as illustrative of the invention and not as a limitation.
