Abstract: The present invention relates to an herbal cream formulation useful for therapeutic and cosmetic applications for the treatment of chronic skin disorder-Vitiligo. For the first time the extract of Psoralea coryifolia seeds (Bakuchi) was isolated and used for herbal formulation.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly, studies were undertaken to develop a cream base herbal formulation containing
single herbal drug and synthetic ingredients for topical application over the affected areas which
has been found to help in curing the disease Vitiligo. This formulation has proven usefulness in
removal of pigmentation on surface of the skin.
It was more effective and activated in presence of sunlight.Bakuchi (Psoralea coryifolia) causes
irritation on the skin and it removes the upper layer of the skin and brings healthy skin by
improving the .distribution of the melanin in the skin and cures this condition
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
The objective of the present invention is to provide an herbal formulation useful to treat chronic
skin disease such as vitiligo and depigmentation activity, which obviates the drawbacks of the
present'formulations available in the market.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a herbal cream formulation useful for the treatment
of chronic skin diseases such as vitiligo, depigmentation and anti-fungal activity. This comprises
plant parts or oils from medicinal plants or any drug or their mixture thereof having antiinflammatory,
high anti-fungal and antibacterial property like Psoralea corylifolia (bakuchi).
The extraction of bakuchi seed powder was done using hexane as solvent in a soxhlet apparatus
for 18hrs and then the extract is concentrated under vacuum at 50°C. Major constituent-
Psoralen was used for the treatment which was obtained as solid by evaporation of the solvent.
The compound was purified by recrystallization method from ethanol.
Psoralen
This extract formed was used further for the treatment and management of skin disease such as
vitiligo. Bioactive is separated from plant Psoralea corylifolia and developed as an ingredient
for topical preparation i e herbal formulation for the treatment of disease.
Formulation listed below was used for preparing the herbal cream.

Method of preparation: Bakuchi seed extracts was initially dispersed in a propylene glycol and
placed on shaker for complete mixing. Carbomer, Imid urea and water were heated in vessel at
78 "C (phase A) and separately LLP (Light liquid paraffin) and Stearic acid were heated in a
separate vessel (phase B) at 78 "C and then the phase A and B are mixed in homogenizer for 1
hrs and finally the seed extract is mixed at 40 O C for the preparation of final product.
We claim:
1. Psoralen has been extracted from Bakuchi seed for the first time which also contains
some other major products along with isopsoralen and bavachinin.
2. The claim 1 product along with a mixture of psoralen and isopsoralen,
has been recommended for topical application in leucoderma( Vitiligo).
3. The claim 1 and 2 product has been used for the first time as isolated products for
tropical application for Vitiligo.
4. The claim 1 product was attributed to the interaction of microemulsion components with
skin resulting in permeation enhancement and retention of Psoralen into skin layers.
5. It was concluded that claim 1 loaded gel formulation could be a promising formulation
for effective treatment of vitiligo.
6. The claim 1 product is a furanocoumahs which are a subgroup of phenolic compounds
included in the coumarins group. They can be subdivided into two types: linear, and
angular generically known as psoralens.
7. Psoralen-containing plants have been used for centuries in a popular medicine to treat
vitiligo, a skin disease characterized by lack of pigmentation but always as crude
product.
8. The claim 1 product is formulated with LLP, Irnid urea, Carbomer, Stearic acid and
propylene glycol for the preparation of tropical ointment.
