Ball Joint And Method For Manufacturing A Joint Housing

Abstract: The invention relates to a ball joint, for example for an axle system of a motor vehicle, and also to a method of manufacturing a joint housing for a ball joint Said ball joint possesses a substantially annular joint housing (3), within the cylindrical interior of which a ball shell (1) can be disposed. The ball (2) of a ball pin can be received, in a manner capable of sliding movement, within the ball shell (1) and the joint housing (3) possesses elevations (10) and/or depressions (15), which are disposed in the region of its inner superficies (13, 14), for interlocking with the surface of the ball shell (1). According to the invention, the ball joint is distinguished by the fact that the inner superficies (13,14) of the joint housing (3) is subdivided, in the axial direction of said joint housing, into at least two separate functional sections (13, 14), the inner superficies of the joint housing being of smoothly cylindrical construction in the region of a functional section (14) which is at the housing cover end, while the elevations (10) and/or depressions (15) are disposed in the region of a functional section (13) of the inner superficies of the joint housing which is at the ball pin end. The ball joint according to the invention offers firm anchoring of the plastic bearing shell within the joint housing with a simultaneous improvement in the imperviousness of the gap between the joint housing and the ball shell. Furthermore, the joint pretensioning and the frictional moments between the joint ball and the ball shell can be better reproduced.
