Abstract: A battery management system according to the present invention comprises: a swelling detector including at least one sensor for detecting a swelling state of a battery cell; and a control circuit for generating first time-series data of the swelling state, which is repeatedly detected during a charging procedure included in a charging/discharging cycle for the battery cell. The control circuit determines, from the first time-series data, a first amount of change in the swelling state in the charging procedure. The control circuit determines whether the battery cell has an internal short-circuit failure on the basis of the first amount of change.
