The present invention relates to a battery module and a battery pack including the same, and more particularly, to a battery module with enhanced stability and a battery pack including the same.
background
[4]
As technology development and demand for mobile devices increase, the demand for secondary batteries as an energy source is rapidly increasing. Accordingly, many studies have been conducted on secondary batteries that can meet various demands.
[5]
Secondary batteries are attracting a lot of attention as an energy source for power devices such as electric bicycles, electric vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles, as well as mobile devices such as cell phones, digital cameras, and laptops.
[6]
Recently, as the need for a large-capacity secondary battery structure, including the use of secondary batteries as an energy storage source, increases, the demand for a battery pack having a medium-to-large module structure in which a plurality of secondary batteries are assembled in series/parallel connected battery pack is increasing. .
[7]
On the other hand, when configuring a battery pack by connecting a plurality of battery cells in series/parallel, a battery module composed of at least one battery cell is configured, and other components are added using at least one battery module to form a battery pack. The way it is configured is common. Since the battery cells constituting the mid-to-large-sized battery module are composed of rechargeable batteries capable of charging and discharging, such a high-output, large-capacity secondary battery generates a large amount of heat during the charging and discharging process.
[8]
The battery module includes a battery cell stack in which a plurality of battery cells are stacked, a frame accommodating the battery cell stack, and an end plate covering front and rear surfaces of the battery cell stack.
[9]
1 is a view showing a state of ignition of a battery module mounted on a conventional battery pack. FIG. 2 is a view taken along line AA of FIG. 1 , showing a flame affecting an adjacent battery module when a battery module mounted on a conventional battery pack ignites.
[10]
1 and 2 , a conventional battery module includes a battery cell stack in which a plurality of battery cells 10 are stacked, a frame 20 accommodating the battery cell stack, and front and rear surfaces of the battery cell stack. It includes an end plate 30 , a terminal bus bar 40 formed to protrude out of the end plate, and the like.
[11]
The frame 20 and the end plate 30 may be coupled to be sealed through welding. When the frame 20 for accommodating the battery cell stack and the end plate 30 are combined as described above, the internal pressure of the battery cell 10 increases when the battery module is overcharged to exceed the fusion strength limit value of the battery cell 10 . In this case, high-temperature heat, gas, and flame generated in the battery cell 10 may be discharged to the outside of the battery cell 10 .
[12]
At this time, high-temperature heat, gas, and flame may be discharged through openings formed in the end plate 30 . In the battery pack structure in which a plurality of battery modules are disposed so that the end plates 30 face each other, high-temperature heat, gas And it may affect the battery module adjacent to the battery module ejecting the flame. Through this, the terminal bus bar 40 formed on the end plate 30 of the neighboring battery module may be damaged, and high-temperature heat, gas, and flame are exposed to the battery through the opening formed in the end plate 30 of the neighboring battery module. It may enter the inside of the module and damage the plurality of battery cells 10 .

[54]
The configuration of the battery cell 110 described above is an example, and the shape of the battery cell 110 for configuring the battery cell stack may be variously modified.
[55]
The battery cells 110 may be configured in plurality, and the plurality of battery cells 110 may be stacked to be electrically connected to each other to form the battery cell stack 120 . The upper plate 130 may be positioned on the upper side of the battery cell stack 120 , and a bus bar frame ( 140) may be located. The battery cell stack 120 , the upper plate 130 , and the bus bar frame 140 may be accommodated together in the module frame 200 .
[56]
A thermal conductive resin may be injected between the lower surface of the battery cell stack 120 and the module frame 200 , and between the lower surface of the battery cell stack 120 and the module frame 200 through the injected thermal conductive resin. A thermally conductive resin layer (not shown) may be formed. Through the module frame 200 , the battery cell stack 120 accommodated in the module frame 200 and components connected thereto can be protected from external physical impact.
[57]
The bus bar frame 140 is positioned on the front and rear surfaces of the battery cell stack 120 , respectively, to cover the battery cell stack 120 and at the same time guide the connection between the battery cell stack 120 and external devices. can do. Specifically, the bus bar 141 and the terminal bus bar 142 may be mounted on the bus bar frame 140 . The electrode leads 111 and 112 of the battery cell 110 may be bent after passing through the slit formed in the bus bar frame 140 to be bonded to the bus bar 141 or the terminal bus bar 142 . The battery cells 110 constituting the battery cell stack 120 through the bus bar 141 may be connected in series or in parallel, and an external device through the terminal bus bar 142 exposed to the outside of the battery module 100 . [58]
The end plates 301 and 302 are formed to cover the front and rear surfaces of the battery cell stack 120 . A mounting portion 310 for coupling with the pack frame is formed on the end plates 301 and 302 . Specifically, the first end plate 301 and the second end plate 302 may be positioned on the front and rear surfaces of the battery cell stack 120 , respectively. The end plates 301 and 302 can protect the bus bar frame 140 and various electrical components connected thereto from external impact, and for this, they must have a predetermined strength and may include a metal such as aluminum.
[59]
Terminal busbar openings 320 and connector openings 330 are formed in the end plates 301 and 302 for connecting the terminal busbars 142 and connectors (not shown) mounted on the busbar frame 140 to the outside. and gas or heat generated from the battery cell 110 through the openings 320 and 330 may be discharged to the outside of the battery module 100 . The end plates 301 and 302 and the module frame 200 are coupled by welding, and the module frame 200 and the plurality of battery cells 110 located inside the end plates 301 and 302 are welded to the sealed end. Through the coupling structure between the plates 301 and 302 and the module frame 200 , connection with the outside may be blocked except for the above-described openings 320 and 330 .
[60]
The conventional battery module, as described above, can discharge high-temperature heat, gas, or flame generated in the battery cell through the openings. However, in a battery pack structure in which a plurality of battery modules are disposed so that the end plates face each other, high temperature heat, gas, flame, etc. ejected from the battery module may damage neighboring battery modules.
[61]
Accordingly, the venting part 400 is formed on the side surface of the module frame 200 according to the present embodiment, so that heat, gas, flame, etc. discharged through the openings 320 and 330 can be dispersed. The venting part 400 may have a hole structure formed on the side surface of the module frame 200 . As shown in FIGS. 3 and 5 , the hole structure according to the present embodiment may have a shape in which the side end of the module frame 200 is partially cut.
[62]
By diversifying the exhaust path inside the battery module 100 through the venting part 400, it prevents the concentration of exhaust to only a part of the battery module 100 during ignition, and prevents the discharge of high-temperature heat, gas and flame. can be dispersed.
[63]
Also, referring to FIGS. 5 and 6 , the venting unit 400 according to the present embodiment is formed at a position corresponding to a portion of the battery cell 110 where the cell terrace 116 is located. A lot of heat is generated in the electrode leads 111 and 112 of the battery cell 110 and the cell terrace 116 adjacent thereto, and the sealing of the cell terrace 116 is released due to a change in pressure inside the battery module 100 . high temperature heat, gas and flame may be emitted. At this time, the venting part 400 according to the present embodiment is formed at a position corresponding to the cell terrace 116 to immediately discharge high-temperature heat, gas, and flame to the outside of the battery module 100 . Specifically, as the plurality of battery cells 110 constituting the battery cell stack is formed, the plurality of cell terraces 116 may be formed to form the cell terrace assembly 116G. The venting part 400 may be formed on a side surface of the module frame 200 corresponding to the cell terrace assembly 116G. The portion in which the venting part 400 is formed according to the present embodiment may be formed adjacent to the cell terrace assembly 116G rather than the battery cell stack 120 . For example, the venting part 400 may be formed at a position corresponding to the cell terrace assembly 116G.
[64]
Although not shown, a venting part may be additionally formed adjacent to the second end plate 302 . In this case, the additionally formed venting part may be formed to discharge gas toward the first end plate 301 .
[65]
Hereinafter, a venting unit according to modified embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. 7 to 9 .
[66]
7 is a perspective view illustrating a battery module according to another embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 8 is a plan view taken along the cutting line CC of FIG. 7 . 8 is a plan view taken along the XY plane of FIG. 7 and viewed in the C direction. 9 is a perspective view showing a battery module according to another embodiment of the present invention.
[67]
Referring to FIGS. 7 and 9 , the venting units 500 and 600 according to the present embodiments are the end plates positioned further from the venting unit 500 among the first end plate 301 and the second end plate 302 . It can be formed to exhaust gas in the direction. As shown in FIGS. 7 and 9 , the venting parts 500 and 600 located close to the first end plate 301 may be formed to discharge gas in the direction of the second end plate 302 located further away. Although not shown, the venting part 500 may be additionally formed adjacent to the second end plate 302 . In this case, the additionally formed venting part may be formed to discharge gas toward the first end plate 301 .
[68]
Venting units 500 and 600 are formed at positions corresponding to the portion where the cell terrace 116 is located, and the first end plate 301 is positioned opposite to the reference portion of the battery cell stack 120 . Since it is closer than 302, when the gas is discharged in the direction of the first end plate 301, high-temperature heat, gas, and flame are emitted to other battery modules adjacent to the first end plate 301, and to the other battery modules. may cause damage. In order to prevent this, it is preferable that the venting parts 500 and 600 are formed to discharge the gas in the direction of the second end plate 302 . This will be described again with reference to FIG. 10 below.
[69]
7 and 8, the venting unit 500 according to the present embodiment has a hole structure formed in the side portion of the module frame 200, and unlike the venting unit 400 according to the embodiment described in FIG. 5, the module frame ( 200) A hole may be formed to be spaced apart from the end of the side part by a predetermined interval. Furthermore, the venting part 500 according to the present embodiment may have a hole structure that obliquely penetrates the side part of the module frame 200 . In this case, the hole structure may have an inclination direction closer to an end plate positioned further from the venting part 500 among the first end plate 301 and the second end plate 302 .
[70]
Specifically, the inner inlet of the obliquely penetrating venting part 500 may be formed closer to the first end plate 301 than the outer outlet, and the outer outlet may be formed closer to the second end plate 302 than the inner inlet. .
[71]
Through the above structure, it is possible to naturally impart direction to the heat or gas discharged through the venting unit 500 . That is, it is possible to induce the gas to be discharged in the direction of the second end plate 302 located further away, thereby preventing damage to other battery modules adjacent to the first end plate 301 .
[72]
In addition, the venting unit 500 according to the present embodiment does not require a separate additional space as a perforated hole structure, and has the advantage of providing the directionality of the discharged gas simply by passing through the module frame 200 . have.
[73]
Next, referring to FIG. 9 , the venting part 600 is formed on the side surface of the module frame 200 and faces an inlet 610 and an inlet 610 facing one side of the battery cell according to the stacking direction of the battery cell stack. It may include an outlet 620 for discharging the gas introduced through, and a connector 630 connecting the inlet 610 and the outlet 620 .
[74]
The outlet 620 may be formed in a direction perpendicular to the inlet 610 . In addition, the connection part 630 may have a shape protruding from the side surface of the module frame 200, and may be formed to be inclined.
[75]
According to the structure as described above, the venting unit 600 according to the present embodiment may more reliably guide heat or gas inside the battery module toward the second end plate 302 . That is, it has an advantage that the directionality of heat or gas can be more reliably provided. In addition, the connection part 630 may serve as a kind of cover to prevent foreign substances from entering the battery module.
[76]
On the other hand, there is no particular limitation on the number of the venting units 400 , 500 , and 600 according to the embodiment of the present invention described above, and may be one or may be configured in plurality. However, when a plurality of venting parts 400 , 500 , and 600 are formed, a direction perpendicular to the side of the module frame 200 is arranged to correspond to the position of the cell terrace 116 constituting the battery cell stack 120 . can be arranged accordingly. Here, the direction perpendicular to the side of the module frame 200 means a direction parallel to the z-axis in FIG. 5 .
[77]
Referring back to FIG. 3 , the module frame 200 according to the present invention may have a structure of a mono frame or a structure in which an upper cover is coupled to a U-shaped frame. First, the mono frame may be in the form of a metal plate in which the upper surface, the lower surface and both sides are integrated, and may be manufactured by extrusion molding. Next, in the case of a structure in which the upper cover is coupled to the U-shaped frame, the lower surface and both sides may be formed by coupling the upper cover to the upper side of the U-shaped frame, which is an integrated metal plate, and may be manufactured by press molding.
[78]
5 or 7, the venting parts 400 and 500 of the hole structure may be applied to both a mono frame manufactured by extrusion molding or a U-shaped frame manufactured by press molding. On the other hand, as shown in FIG. 9 , the venting part 600 having a protruding structure is easier to implement in a U-shaped frame manufactured by press molding rather than a mono frame manufactured by extrusion molding. However, in forming the venting part 600 of the protruding structure, a hole is formed in the side part of the module frame 200 and the connection part 630 and the outlet 620 are joined to the side part of the module frame 200. can do. In this case, the venting unit 600 is also applicable to a mono frame manufactured by extrusion molding.
[79]
10 is a top plan view of the battery pack 1000 according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[80]
Referring to FIG. 10 , the battery pack 1000 according to an embodiment of the present invention may include two or more of the battery modules 100a and 100b described above.
[81]
The battery modules 100a and 100b may be accommodated in the pack frame 1100, and may be mounted together with various control and protection systems such as a battery management system (BMS) and a cooling system.
[82]
The first battery module 100a and the second battery module 100b may each have openings 320a, 330a, 320b, and 330b formed on one side facing each other.
[83]
Specifically, the first end plate 301a of the first battery module 100a and the second end plate 302b of the second battery module 100b may face each other. In this case, the terminal bus bar opening 320a and the connector opening 330a may be formed in the first end plate 301a, and the terminal bus bar opening 320b and the connector opening 330b in the second end plate 302b. ) can be formed.
[84]
The battery modules 100a and 100b according to the present embodiment may reduce heat, gas, and flame emitted through the openings 320a, 330a, 320b, and 330b by providing the above-described venting portion on the side surface of the module frame.
[85]
In addition, the venting parts 500 and 600 shown in FIGS. 7 and 9 may be provided in the first battery module 100a, and accordingly, the second battery module 100b is located in a direction opposite to the direction in which it is located. It can induce gas and flame to be discharged. That is, damage that may be applied to the second battery module 100b may be minimized.
[86]
The battery modules 100a and 100b according to the present embodiment may be spaced apart from the side part 1110 of the pack frame 1100 .
