Abstract: The present disclosure provides a method of casting ribs on a substrate, said method comprising acts of, mounting applicator comprising plurality of nozzles and polymer filled into the applicator, placing the substrate below the nozzles of the applicator, applying pressure onto the melt polymer to cast plurality of polymer ribs of predetermined shape on the substrate, and cooling the substrate casted with ribs.
Description:SAME AS UPLOADED , Claims:1. A battery separator, comprising:
a substrate; and
a plurality of ribs disposed on the substrate.
2. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the ribs comprise discontinuous ribs.
3. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the ribs comprise discontinuous longitudinal ribs, discontinuous diagonal ribs, dispersed dots, dispersed beads, vertical intermittent ribs, horizontal intermittent ribs, straight dash ribs and dots, horizontal dash ribs and dots, and/or intermittent zig zag ribs.
4. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the ribs are sinusoidal.
5. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the ribs comprise a polymer.
6. A battery separator as in claim 5, wherein the polymer comprises polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene, and/or vinyl acetate.
7. A battery separator as in claim 5, wherein the polymer is a hot melt polymer.
8. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the substrate is wet laid.
9. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the substrate is a glass mat.
10. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the ribs are adhered directly onto the substrate without an intervening adhesive layer.
11. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the substrate includes a first side and a second side, and wherein the ribs are disposed on both the first side and the second side.
12. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the substrate includes a first side and a second side, and wherein the ribs are disposed on only the first side.
13. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the ribs have a predetermined shape.
14. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the ribs have a thickness of greater than or equal to 0.48 mm and less than or equal to 2.02 mm.
15. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the ribs have a width of greater than or equal to 1.08 mm and less than or equal to 2.34 mm.
16. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the battery separator has a basis weight of greater than or equal to 200 gsm and less than or equal to 303 gsm.
17. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the battery separator has a volume porosity of greater than or equal to 53% and less than or equal to 70%.
18. A battery separator as in claim 1, wherein the battery separator has an electrical resistance of greater than or equal to 0.01 ?·cm2 and less than or equal to 0.116 ?·cm2.
