Blade Tip Vertical Grinding Fixture For Hp Turbine

Abstract: The grinding fixture designed and manufactured for mounting the High-Pressure Turbine Rotor in vertical axis. The arrangement for mounting the rotor vertically consists of base plate, locating hub, centralizing rod and holding cap. Centralizing rod passes through one end to other end of assembly making it easier to set up before grinding. It holds the rotor assembly firmly on vertical position when blade tips are being ground with grinding wheel. It prevents wobbling of rotor during grinding in order to produce dimensionally correct part. The complete fixture arrangement is easily detachable and very easy to install.

Specification

1. Title of the invention
Title of invention: Blade tip vertical grinding fixture for HP Turbine
2. Field of Invention
The present invention relates to manufacturing, repair, overhaul of Gas Turbines.
3. Background of invention
Presently high-pressure Turbine blade tip grinding is being done in horizontal direction which requires specialized fixtures and machineries and involves high cost due to specific infrastructure requirements.
In the present prevailing system, there is requirement of heavy fixture specialized for grinding job only. The surface finish of the blade tip is not so smooth and give appearances of grinding mark as belt grinder removes the material from the blade tip. Further time taken to grind is more.
4. Summary of the present invention
The grinding fixture is required for mounting the High-Pressure Turbine Rotor in vertical axis. The arrangement for mounting the rotor vertically consists of base plate, locating hub, centralizing rod and holding cap. Centralizing rod passes through one end to other end of assembly making it easier to set up before grinding.
5. Brief description of drawings - FIG-l schematically illustrates the parts of the
fixture.

6. Detailed description of invention
Construction:
Locating Hub (1) is rigidly fixed (bolted) to a heavier base plate (2) which in-turn is mounted on the machine base plate. Centralizing rod is attached to locating hub through screw threads. Holding cap get fitted to the component being ground after component is mounted on the locating hub.
Function:
This fixture is designed to hold the turbine rotor in vertical position rigidly over base of machine to prevent eccentric movement of HP turbine blade during grinding. Base plate being heavier and attachable to machine base to ensure erect mounting of the part and centralizing rod of the fixture is attached to the base plate ensure accurate mounting of rotor shaft forward end on the . hub. Rear end of the shaft is screwed to top holding cap which is mounted over centralizing rod. This ensures maintaining concentricity between forward and rear end of the shaft before grinding. Washer and nut help in holding cap in position during grinding.
