FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention is directed to body side engine mount system of vehicle.
*
BACKGROUND/PRIOR ART
In order to .maximize the payload area (load bearing area), engine is under
hanged from the side rails of the vehicle with the help of two mount brackets
and one sub member. Now, reference may be made to fig. 1. Out of tw.) mount
brackets (1,2) for mounting engine, one bracket (1) is placed on left side and
another bracket (2) is located on right side of the vehicle with the sub member
(3) in between. One end of each of the mount brackets (1, 2) is held by the sub
member, other end of which is mounted on body side long member (Ai, A2) as
shown.
In addition to the above, there is provision of a side support bracket (4, 5)
adjacent to each of the mount brackets (1, 2) so as to strengthen the engine
mount arrangement of vehicle. Similarl to main engine mount brackets (1,2),
these side support brackets are mounted on the sub member at one end and
on the body side long member (Ai, A2) at other end.
All the brackets are made of sheet metal and the sub member is a tubular
member.
However, the aforesaid engine mount system does not possess enough strength
to withstand heavy load of the engine acting thereon.
-3-
Therefore, it causes high stress concentration at the mounting location (Mi, Ma)
of the mounting brackets which is highly prone to failure.
In the current circumstances, a robust body side engine mount system is
required to be devised which can sustain engine load without failure.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
Primary object of the present invention is to provide body side engine mount
system of vehicle which obviates shortcomings of prior art.
Another object of the present invention is to provide body side engine mount
system of vehicle which is not complicated in design.
Further object of the present invention is to provide body side engine mount
system of vehicle which leads to reduction in stress concentration at the engine
bracket mounting location.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide body side engine
mount system of vehicle which possesses higher load carrying capacity to avoid
failure.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to this invention, there'is provided body side engine mount system of
vehicle comprising an engine mount bracket between auxiliary support bracket
and side support bracket on both sides of the vehicle, wherein said brackets
are held by means of sub member on engine side and secured to the long
member on body side of vehicle.

DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE
ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
The present invention provides teaching regarding a technology pertaining to
novel body side engine mount system, which imparts more strength and adds
more stiffness to the structure, where engine is mounted.
-5-
Now, reference may be made to fig. 2 illustrating engine mount system.
According to this, an engine mount bracket (1', 2') is positioned between
auxiliary support bracket and side support bracket (3'& 4', 5'& 6') on both left
and right side of the vehicle.
As best seen in the figure, all the brackets are supported by means of sub
member (S') at one end and by body side long member (Bi, Ba) at other 'snd.
The sub member is a tubular part. The brackets are preferably made of sheet
metal without restricting scope of the invention to the same. Thus other
materials readily apparent to a person skilled in the art are understood to be
within purview of the invention.
Now various brackets of the invention will be described hereinundcr:-
Body side engine mount bracket (2') on right hand side of vehicle comprises a
single structure, base of which is substantially having a channel section as
shown in fig. 3A in place of a bracket (B) provided in prior art. According to
prior art, the bracket (B) is a single piece including base {B') having angled
configuration, which is bolted to bottom surface of the long member (L) at two
points as in figure 3.
The aforecited engine mount bracket has been optimized in order to accomplish
the desired level of strength and stiffness so as to keep the stress values within
the safe limits.
According to the present invention, base of the bracket(S) is extended towards
the side face of the long member (L) of vehicle so as to establish contact with
bottom surface as well as side surface of the long member as in fig. 3A.
-6-
Thus, the base (S) is having substantially a channel section in longitudinal
direction thereof. Here, the base of bracket (S) is connected to the long member
by fastener such as bolt.
The base of the bracket is bolted to the bottom surface of the long member al
atleast three points and to the side surface at atleast two points as shown. In
the invention, more number of bolting points is provided to bear the engine
load and at the same time for even distribution of said engine load onto the
long member. The bracket is having two side members (Si, S?) facing each
other, wherein one end of the bracket is closed by a member (Ci) in proximity
to the sub member and another end of said bracket (C2) is open towards the
long member (L). All the members are mounted on the base constituting a
single piece.
The thickness of the bracket (2') i,s reduced approximately by 25%, therefore its
weight is comparable to that of the available bracket (B, fig. 3)-
The other engine mount bracket (1') on left hand side confirms to the shape of
a channel as indicated.in fig. 4. One end of the bracket is closed which is
adjacent to the sub member and other wider end of which is open and base of
the same in bolted to the bottom surface of the long member. The bracket is
held to the sub member with the help of its side members as illustrated.
The auxiliary support bracket (3') at/in proximity to the end of the sub member
is also a single structure, for which reference may be. made to fig. 5.
This is located on left hand side of vehicle. The bracket confirming to shape of
channel, one side face (Fi) of which is a straight member and other side face
comprises an angled member (F2), wherein the width of the bracket increases
towards the long member of vehicle as shown.
-7-
The wide base end of the bracket is secured to the bottom surface of long
member by atleast two fasteners like bolts maintaining required gap
therebetween. This increases load bearing area with even distribution of load.
Now reference may be made to fig. 6 for an auxiliary support bracket (5') at/in
proximity to end of the sub rriember (S'), in which said bracket is placed on
right hand side of vehicle.
Said bracket (5') constitutes an elongated bracket with the shape of a channel,
which is having an angled sectfon as shown in its longitudinal direction. It
includes a base (1") integrated to two side members (2", 3").
One end of the bracket is secured to the sub member, other end of which is in
connection with the bottom surface of the long member by means of bolting
atleast at one location.
For side support bracket (4', 6') reference may be made to fig. 7 and 8. Both the
brackets with the configuration of a channel having substantially U-Section in
transverse direction which are bolted to the bottom surface of the long member
atleast at one bolting point. The left hand side bracket (4', fig. 7) is closed at
one end near to the sub member and open towards the long member. The right
hand side bracket (6', fig. 8) is open at both ends as shown.
The brackets are longer (in the longitudinal direction) as compared to prior art,
so as to close the gap between the sub member and long member of vehicle.
This is because the sub member is shifted towards rear end of the vehicle as in
fig. 9 in order to reduce the gap between engine mount bracket (1', 2') and
respective side support bracket (4', 6'). The provision of reduced gap results in
effective load sharing between the engine mount bracket and side support
bracket on both
wrnrn^

sides (Left Hand Side and Right Hand Side) o£ the vehicle as compared to the
prior art. This adds significantly to the stiffness with reduction in the stress
level. • -••;
All the aforesaid brackets are held by the sub member on engine side and
bolted to the long member on body side of vehicle.
The newly devised body side engine mount system of vehicle eventually leads to
reduction in stress concentration at the location of engine bracket mounting
(NT, M"). Further, it contributes to load carrying capacity of the system, which
in turn prevents mechanical failure thereof.
Advantageous Features:
- Adds to stiffness of the system
- Enhancement in the load bearing capacity of the system
- Reduction in stress concentration at the engine bracket mounting
location
- Prevents mechanical failure of the system thereby avoiding maintenance
cost and increasing useful life span
- Customer satisfaction.
It is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications,
adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant embodiments
