Bogie Mounted Brake System For Freight Carriages

Abstract: The Bogie Mounted Brake System being very compact and highly efficient, would require less space in the under frame of the wagon, lower costs by eliminating a large number of linkages like pin, levers, connecting rod, etc and also saves considerable time while the wagon are overhauled during routine maintenance, particularly at the time of replacement of worn out brake shoes. Both sides centrally placed brake cylinder provide equally distributed loading on the brake beam.

Specification

Bogie Mounted Brake System:
• The present innovation relates to an improved rail brake system for
use of railways. It is a unique brake system designed by Stone India
Ltd to be used in goods train, wagon of Indian Railways.
• It integrates various components of conventional brake system like
brake cylinder, slack adjuster and various levers.
• Brake cylinders are mounted close to the wheels.
• Brake cylinders acts as slack adjuster to adjust the slack also.
Working Principle:
• Air is supplied to Brake cylinder at 3.8 Kglsq cm.
• Bell crank levers will rotate on the hinge pin on beam.
• With the help of push rods the beams will move apart until brake is
applied.
• If there is any slack difference from the required slack Brake cylinder
will pay-outl pay-in and the slack will be adjusted.
• For releasing the Brake, the Brake cylinder pressure will be reduced.
Merits over conventional Brake system.
• External Slack Adjuster is eliminated.
• Instead of mounting on under frame, Brake Cylinders are mounted
close to the wheel thus reducing the number of levers and pins and
increasing the efficiency of brake application.
• The Brake shoe wear is uniform (Play is allowed).
• High friction composite brake shoe of 'K' type has been used.
• Reduced Braking distance (increased COF of 0.25 from 0.12).
• Reduced weight from 9 Kg to 3 kg (Material CI to Composite
material).
• Reduced noise during Braking

We Claim:

1. Instead of mounting on Under frame Brake Cylinders are mounted on
two bogie of Wagon and close to the wheel, thus reduces the number
of levers and pins.
2. Most efficient Brake System due to reduction of joints.
3. Both sides of the bogie the brake cylinder is used, thus providing
uniform distribution of the load on the brake beam.
4. Due to less number of joints play of brake block is allowed resulting
in uniform brake shoe wear.
5. Slack adjusting is integrated.
6. Use of composite brake shoe reduces weight of brake shoe.
7. Reduced noise during braking.
