It is to be understood that the singular forms "a," "an," and "the" include plural referents
unless the context clearly dictates otherwise.
By the term "substantially" it is meant that the recited characteristic, parameter, or value need
not be achieved exactly, but that deviations or variations, including for example, tolerances,
measurement error, measurement accuracy limitations and other factors known to those of
skill in the art, may occur in amounts that do not preclude the effect the characteristic was
intended to provide.
This inventionrefers to an automatically reclosable bundling system which encloses a bunch
of cylindrical articles like cigarettes packed within a box and gives the consumer the choice
of moving between the closed and open state with a single action articulation of the box.
Thus the automation of bundling opening-closing achieved in the proposed invention is
technologically far more advanced than a standard static bundling used in flip top boxes.

The bundling system comprises of a strip of bundling material having strategically placed
serration pattern, covering an inner container containing the cigarettes which can articulate
with respect to an outer container. To access the cigarettes the consumer has to articulate the
inner container with respect to the outer container. The arrangement of the bundling material,
inner and outer containers are such that in process of articulation of the inner container for the
first time, the bundling top tears off with a sound (sound of freshness) in flaps along the
serration pattern and gives way to the cigarettes for accessing. While closing, the inner
container has to be articulated in reverse and the bundling flaps automatically reclose the
cigarettes.
This novel bundling system can be applied to any shape of outer and inner boxes with
cuboidal cross-sections with various edge/corner profiles like rounded, bevelled etc. The
boxes and bundling system can be created entirely with or combining different materials with
suitable strength properties like paperboard, plastics, metals etc.
The non-obvious feature of the proposed invention is a technologically advanced automated
bundling opening-closing mechanism.
The inventive step here is to replace the traditional practice of cigarette bundling with an
automatic bundling system whose opening/closing movements are integrated with asingle
action opening/closing movement of the cigarette pack, wherein the first opening being with
a burst tearing of the bundle to communicate freshness.
The proposed invention is for providing the consumers of cigarettes and the likes an
opportunity to keep the cigarettes enclosed till the last cigarette is consumed through an
automatically reclosable bundling.
The bundling material of the present invention may be formed of any suitable sheet material
including, but not limited to, paperboard, paper, wax paper, glassine, metallised paper, metal
foil or plastic film.
The bundling system for enclosing a bunch of articles like cigarettes in accordance with the
present invention comprises an internal container for holding the bunch of articles like

cigarettes having its top side defining an access opening. There is also an outer container for
holding said internal container. The bundling sheet is having plurality of serrated
identifications thereon defining a plurality of panels and said bundling sheet having a
plurality of crease lines along which the bundling sheet is folded.
The bundling sheet folded along said crease lines and placed over the internal container
covering the access opening and extending substantially through top, front and back surfaces,
a pair of said panels (3 and 14) glued to said inner container and a pair of panels (1 and 9)
glued to internal surface of said outer container. The internal container articulable with said
outer container and on a first time articulation leading to tearing along said serrated lines thus
separating said bundling sheet in multiple parts forming at least one flap over the access
opening.
This bundling system is made from material like paperboard, paper, wax paper, glassine,
metallised paper, metal foil or plastic film and the like having substantially high crease
retention property. The internal container on substantially upward articulation leads to
opening of flapsand on downward articulation leads to folding back of the flap. The outer
container optionally comprising a lid means on its top to secure said flap.
The lid means integrated to said outer container and adapted to open and reclose on
articulation of said inner container with respect to said outer container. The internal container
articulable with said outer container by actuating said inner container on an actuating surface
optionally from either side openings or through push from bottom mechanism or pull from
top mechanism. The actuating surface is having substantially high friction to facilitate
gripping for causing articulation.
The bundling sheet in this embodiment as shown in Fig 1, has serration lines (2, 7) running
through vertical and horizontal directions dividing the bundling in several surfaces (1, 3, 5, 6,
8, 9 etc).
As shown in fig. 2 & 3, the bundling sheet when folded along the horizontal crease lines, the
sheet forms an inverted 'U' and placed over the internal container of cigarettes (12) covering

the cigarette access opening extending through the top, front and back surfaces. Panels 3 and
14 of the bundling material are glued (10) on the inner container (12).
Fig. 4 shows the placement of the inner container and bundling material inside the outer
container wherein panels 1 and 9 of the bundling material are glued (11) to the internal
surfaces of the external container (13).
When the internal container (12) is actuated with respect to the outer container (13) as shown
in fig. 5 for the first time, the serrations along lines 2 and 7 are torn and the bundling material
is separated in multiple parts. One part comprising panel 3, 5 and 14 remains stuck with the
internal container; other two parts comprising panels 1, 6 and 8, 9 respectively remain stuck
with internal surfaces of the outer container (13). As the internal container moves up/down
the flaps 6 and 8 automatically opens/closes over the cigarette access opening.
Fig. 6 shows the opened bundling with flaps 6 and 8 fully opened and cigarette access area
exposed. When the internal container is moved down, bundling flaps 6 and 8 are folded back
automatically covering the cigarette access area top.
The bundling mechanism as herein above explained can be incorporated in any packaging
structure/system wherein it has an arrangement of an internal container slidable with respect
to an outer container. Thelid can be placed from any other edge of the outer carton, or it may
take a flip top hinged lid or any other suitable construction.
Although the aspects herein are described with various specific embodiments, it will be
obvious for a person skilled in the art to practice the embodiments herein with modifications.
However, all such modifications are deemed to be within the scope of the invention.
It is also to be understood that the description is intended to cover all of the generic and
specific features of the embodiments described herein and all the statements of the scope of
the embodiments which as a matter of language might be said to fall there between.
