[0003] Suicide means taking one's own life voluntarily. Due to various reasons many individuals commit suicide and a very common method of committing suicide is by hanging oneself from ceiling fan. Ceiling fans are available in almost all living rooms, bed rooms, study rooms, hostel rooms and hotel rooms. Since these fans are easily available and when person who decides to commit suicide in a state of deep depression, has a sudden impulse to end his/her life immediately. Suicide is the leading cause of death amongst youngsters, according to a report in the medical journal the lancet. A majority of the suicides are by men, and many choose to hang themselves from ceiling fans. It is well known that ceiling fan is misused as one of the means for committing suicide. A person hangs himself/ herself to the ceiling fan by using rope or by any means and commit suicide. As the Ceiling Fans are available and easily accessible in most places. A recent research showed that around 34% of suicide in India takes place by hanging from ceiling fans. However, people ending their life by hanging themselves from fans, especially women and students, are often heard and the same has been happening for decades. Most suicide attempts are caused by study-related stress and burden of family expectations. Nevertheless no formal statistic confirms it, a cursory look at the cases show that a lot of students take the extreme step by hanging themselves from the ceiling fans of their hostel rooms or study rooms.
[0004] Despite awareness measures, counseling being available for students, the word either never gets to the student or students simply does not seek help. Therefore, there is a dire need of an anti-suicide device for celling fan to reduce or eliminate the suicide attempt by using a ceiling fan. Further, there is a dire need of a suicide prevention device used with conventional ceiling fan that stopping access to methods of committing suicide is a step towards preventing suicides.

[00062] With reference to FIG. 6, a ceiling fan (not numbered) that is suspended from a ceiling (90) comprises a motor (91) and blades (not shown). The ceiling fan is attached to the ceiling (90) by a suspension device (not numbered) that comprises a ceiling bracket (80), a support rod (81), and a hemispherical connector (82) and bolts (83). The ceiling bracket (80) is bent to form two mounting feet (not numbered) and an inner cavity (not numbered). The ceiling bracket (80) is attached to the ceiling (90) by screwing the bolts (83) through the mounting feet and into the ceiling (90). The ceiling bracket (80) has a bottom (not numbered) and a through hole (not numbered) defined through the bottom and communicating with the inner cavity. The hemispherical connector (82) has a convex bottom (not numbered) and is rotatably mounted in the through hole before the ceiling bracket (80) is attached to the ceiling (90). The convex bottom of the hemispherical connector (82) extends partially out of the through hole. The support rod (81) has a top end (not numbered) and a bottom end (not numbered). The top end of the support rod (81) is connected to the hemispherical connector (82). The bottom end of the supporting rod (81) is connected to the motor (91) to suspend the ceiling fan from the ceiling (90). When the motor (91) rotates the blades, a torsional force will be created by the rotation and transmitted to the ceiling bracket (80) through the support rod (81). The rotation will also cause vibrations if the blades are even slightly unbalanced. Installing the blades so the blades are perfectly balanced is extremely difficult to achieve in a mass production environment. Consequently, vibrations of some degree will always be generated by the rotation of the blades and will be transmitted to the ceiling bracket (80) in a longitudinal direction. When the support rod (81) is long such that the motor (91) is far away from the ceiling bracket (80), the transmitted vibrations and forces caused by the blades will be amplified at the ceiling bracket (80). Long-term vibrations and torsional forces on the ceiling bracket (80) loosen the bolts (83) and fatigue the ceiling bracket (80).
[00063] FIG. 6B illustrates overall assembly of the proposed anti-suicide device, in accordance with an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 6B, a spring (602) can prevent fan from hitting the head. The clamp or clamping mechanism (606) can have spring or spring mechanism (602), if someone above 20 kgs or pre-determined weight tries to hang from the fan, the spring (602) simply comes down and the fan drops preventing the student from hanging.
[00064] In an embodiment, when a user tries to hang him, user body weight breaks the clamping mechanism (606) in milliseconds to prevent spine damage or the tightening of the noose, and ensures electricity is completely cut off. It simultaneously sets off a loud alarm alerting others. The spring (602) prevents the fan from hitting the head of the person and causing any damage.
[00065] In an embodiment, the existing clamp inside the fan cup that holds up the fan can be replaced with the clamping mechanism (606) to which one end of spring or spring mechanism (602) is fixed, with the other end is fixed to the hook in the ceiling.
[00066] In an aspect, the spring mechanism also enables to trigger a siren or alarm or other communication means at the same time when the detaching of the rubber element (102) occurs. In an aspect, the alarm or other communication means can be connected so as to warn about the suicide attempt. . In another aspect, the spring mechanism restricts the conventional ceiling fan falling down and touching to the ground surface, however, the clamping device allows the rubber disk (104) to be detached from the rubber element (102) while a force is applied in downward direction (towards gravity).
[00067] In an exemplary embodiment, the clamp can have the spring mechanism, if someone above 20 kgs tries to hang from the fan, the spring simply comes down and the fan drops preventing the student from hanging. At the same time a siren attached inside the cup also goes off, alerting the authorities. The proposed anti-suicide device can attach to a siren as well because they didn't want the user to try out any other method of suicide, because this didn't work.
[00068] In an exemplary embodiment, the proposed anti-suicide device can also include other features attached such as an alerting system that would send a signal to the front desk or directly to the person in charge and also send information to a nearest CCTV camera so the authorities would know where exactly the suicide attempt had taken place.
[00069] It may be appreciated that, a ceiling fan (not numbered) that is suspended from a ceiling comprises a motor and blades (not shown). The ceiling fan is attached to the ceiling by a suspension device (not numbered) that comprises a ceiling bracket, a support rod (a hemispherical connector and bolts. The ceiling bracket is attached to the ceiling by screwing the bolts through the mounting feet and into the ceiling. The ceiling bracket has a bottom (not numbered) and a through hole (not numbered) defined through the bottom and communicating with the inner cavity. The hemispherical connector has a convex bottom (not numbered) and is rotatably mounted in the through hole before the ceiling bracket is attached to the ceiling. The convex bottom of the hemispherical connector extends partially out of the through hole. The support rod has a top end (not numbered) and a bottom end (not numbered). The top end of the support rod is connected to the hemispherical connector. The bottom end of the supporting rod is connected to the motor to suspend the ceiling fan from the ceiling. When the motor rotates the blades, a torsional force will be created by the rotation and transmitted to the ceiling bracket through the support rod. The rotation will also cause vibrations if the blades are even slightly unbalanced. Installing the blades so the blades are perfectly balanced is extremely difficult to achieve in a mass production environment. Consequently, vibrations of some degree will always be generated by the rotation of the blades and will be transmitted to the ceiling bracket in a longitudinal direction. When the support rod is long such that the motor is far away from the ceiling bracket 604, the transmitted vibrations and forces caused by the blades will be amplified at the ceiling bracket 604. Long-term vibrations and torsional forces on the ceiling bracket 604 loosen the bolts and fatigue the ceiling bracket.
[00070] In another aspect, the conventional fans can be fitted with the clamping mechanism (anti-suicide device) having a spring mechanism, according to the present invention, that lets the fan drop when a person tries to hang from it and it also sets off a siren at the same time.
