B) BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
Method and apparatus for making spiral garland
Patent No: US 6260342 B1, Jul 17, 2001.
In this patent, a machine is provided for forming a decorative twisted spiral garland from at least
one continuous ribbon web, and a pair of continuous wires. One or more ribbon webs are guided
to the outside of a pair of elongated threaded rods which are respectively disposed on opposite
sides of and generally parallel to a main axis. The rods form part of a loop frame which is rotated
about the main axis to wind the ribbon webs around the rods in a series of continuous loops and
draw the webs from supply reels, while the rods are simultaneously rotated about their own axes
to advance the ribbon loops along the main axis. A wire supply rotates in synchronism with the
loop frame, guiding a pair of wires into paths respectively on opposite sides of the ribbon loops
and thence along the main axis between pinch rollers for pulling the wires longitudinally along
the axis. The rotation of the wire supply twists the wires and the ribbon loops to form the
garland. The final shape of the garland is determined by the amount of twist imparted to it, which
can be controlled, in part, by collecting the garland in a rotating drum to partially “untwist” the
garland. Filaments may also be guided from supply reels rotating with the loop frame into paths
inside the loops, so as to be twisted with the ribbon loops, the twisting drawing the filaments to
the axis in the finished garland.
Edge-folded garland
Patent No: US 5500258A ,Mar 19, 1996
In this patent , a tinsel-type garland has outwardly-directed reflecting surface areas created by permanently creasing the free ends of the tinsel needles to form tabs bent at an angle of approximately 90-degrees from the shank of the needle. The formation of these tabs orients their surface approximately tangent to the radial array of needles and, thus, faces a plurality of reflective surfaces directly toward the viewer. Only a small additional amount of material is needed to form the tabs which aid in obscuring the center core of the garland. Hence, less compacting of the web may be needed, thus offering an additional cost saving by reducing the amount of material needed to visually fill out the garland. This construction provides a distinctive appearance, especially when mirror-like, highly-reflective metallic web material is used to form the needles.
Garland maker
Patent No: US 5194063 A, Mar 16, 1993
In this patent , a garland making device which comprises an arm rotatable about an axis formed by a stand securable to a work surface, the arm being rotatable by a crank. There is associated with and rotates simultaneously with the arm, a spool to feed a core cord or wire to an operator who adds sections of garland to the core at any desired rate of formation. The arm also provides and feeds from an independent source and by rotation of the arm wire which is wrapped by the arm around the foliage and core.

Synthetic fur garland and method of making same Patent No: US 4673599 A , June 16 , 1987
In this patent, Fur garland is prepared by cutting strips crosswise to the length of pelted knitted pile fabric, applying spray contact adhesive to the lengthwise edges of the plush pile, pulling on the strip lengthwise causing the knitted body to curl into a tubular shape adhesively attaching the edges together forming a plush garland, attaching tubular force fit interlocks on both ends of the garland allowing the garland to be connected in a continuous length.
Decorative sheeting and garland Patent No: US 3637452 A , Jan 25 ,1972
In this patent, Decorative polymer sheeting comprising a longitudinal web portion positioned centrally widthwise thereof, a multiplicity of elongated strips integral with said web portion and extending outwardly from both sides thereof and a permanent crease on each strip extending over a substantial portion of its length is continuously made by passing a continuous thin, deformable
polymer sheet through a die in which a pair of elongated blades repetitively cuts slits in the sheet thereby forming the strips and a pair of creaser punches which move in unison with the blades longitudinally creases each strip as the next following adjacent strip is being cut by the blades.
Machine for manufacturing chenille and garlands Patent No: US 3330103 A , Jul 11 , 1967
Machines for manufacturing chenille and garlands are already known which comprise a device for producing `a tube from lamentary or band-shaped winding material using two parallel pairs of wires or threads, each of which consists of a core wire or thread extending through the tube and an outer wire or thread, and a device for twisting the pairs of wires or threads around sections of the winding material, which are formed by cutting open the tube and for drawing off the pairs of wires or threads. In such machines, the winding material for producing the tube is wound directly on the parallel-running core wires. During the drawing-olf operation the core wires carry the tube with them and deliver it to a cutting device. Subsequently, the core wires are twisted together with the outer wires or thread. Thus, the core wires serve at the same time as conveying means for the tube.
