Containers For Storing Transporting And Using Fluids, Particularly Liquids

Abstract: A synthetic polymeric thin walled container, having half fluted bellow type side walls, each of the flutes being slanting in the operative upward side and flat on the downward side so that in the non filled configuration of the container the container can be folded along the flutes to reduce the effective volume occupied by the container.

THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION PARTICULARLY DESCRIBES
AND ASCERTAINS THE NATURE OF THIS INVENTION AND THE
MANNER IN WHICH IT IS TO BE PERFORMED:-

This invention relates to containers for storing, transporting and using fluids, particularly liquids.
Particularly, this invention relates to containers of synthetic polymeric material which are reusably utilized for storing and transportation of liquids and fluids particularly for medicinal and pharmaceutical use. Although the containers of this invention are specially designed for storing and transporting pharmaceutical fluids, the containers can be also used for transporting other fluids like drinking water and juice or juice concentrates.
One problem associated with bottles for transporting fluids is that the bottles bulk is acceptable when the bottles are full but in the reverse direction when the empties have to transported to the filling station, the empty bottles/containers occupy a lot of space.
An object of this invention is to provide a container, typically a bottles that can load a full quantity of liquid/fluid but can be collapsed to occupy a smaller volume in its inoperative configuration.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of this invention, there is provided a synthetic polymeric thin walled container, having half fluted bellow type side walls, each of the flutes being slanting in the operative upward side and flat on the
2

downward side so that in the non filled configuration of the container the container can be folded along the flutes to reduce the effective volume occupied by the container.
The invention will now be described with reference to the
accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the container of this
invention in its operative filled configuration; and
Figure 2 shows the container of figure 1 in its in operative
configuration with the body of the container flattened to occupy
reduced space as shown in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, a container in accordance with this invention is indicated generally by the reference numeral 10.
The container 10 is defined by a side wall 12, a base 14 and a mouth end 16. The side wail of the container 10 has flutes defined by a slanting region 18 and a straight region 20. The container therefore has half fluted bellow type side walls 12, each of the flutes being slanting in the operative upward side and flat on the downward side.
The container 10 can be extended into its operative position as
seen in figure 1 or can be flattened to its in operative position as
seen in figure 2. In the non filled configuration of the container
the container can be folded along the flutes defined by the
slanting member 18 and the straight member 20. The angle
3

between the slanting member 18 and the straight member is acute and typically below 30 degrees. It is obvious that the volume occupied by the container in figure 2 is much less than that seen in figure 1.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of this invention the body of the container 10 is of a transparent or translucent synthetic polymeric material. The cap 16 for the container 10 can be sealed with a rubber bung so that the container can be used for transporting and storing pharmaceutical fluids or can be of the twist type for transporting and storing fluids such as purified drinking water.
While considerable emphasis has been placed herein on the structures and structural interrelationships between the component parts of the preferred embodiments, it will be appreciated that many embodiments can be made and that many changes can be made in the preferred embodiments without departing from the principals of the invention. These and other changes in the preferred embodiment as well as other embodiments of~the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein, whereby it is to be distinctly understood that the foregoing descriptive matter is to be interpreted merely as illustrative of the invention and not as a limitation.

I Claim:
1. A synthetic polymeric thin walled container, having half
fluted bellow type side walls, each of the flutes being
slanting in the operative upward side and flat on the
downward side so that in the non filled configuration of the
container the container can be folded along the flutes to
reduce the effective volume occupied by the container
2. A synthetic polymeric thin walled container as claimed in
claim 1, in which the angle between the slanting and straight
side of the flute is acute and typically 30 degrees or less.
3. A synthetic polymeric thin walled container as described
herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
