Controlling Fluctuating Surface Effects Of Turbulent Spots In A Transitional Boundary Layer
Abstract: ABSTRACT CONTROLLING FLUCTUATING SURFACE EFFECTS OF TURBULENT SPOTS IN A TRANSITIONAL BOUNDARY LAYER An aerodynamic body (100) of a machine and a method for controlling fluctuating surface effects of turbulent spots in a boundary layer transition region of the aerodynamic body (100) are disclosed. The aerodynamic body (100) comprises a surface (102) which is in contact with fluid during the operation of the machine, a primary region (104) of distributed roughness, and a boundary layer transition onset region. The surface (102) has a leading edge (106). The primary region (104) is located a first distance from the leading edge (106). The method involves disposing a control strip (108) close to the transition onset region and at a second distance from the leading edge (106) to control the level and spectral distribution of the skin friction/surface heat transfer fluctuations (to cause either their suppression or aggravation) associated with the turbulent spots in a boundary layer transition region.
