Cosmetic Composition Comprising Acidic Polysaccharides, Preparation And Uses Thereof

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a cosmetic formulation with moderate to high concentrations of high molecular weight acidic polysaccharides, which is stable and does not suffer from phase separation. The present disclosure also provides a general method of preparing phase stable formulations for cosmetic use which are tolerant to phase separation up to extended periods of time.

Specification

Claims:1. A stable cosmetic composition comprising:
a. pectin;
b. acacia gum;
c. at least one neutralizing agent;
d. at least one divalent calcium species;
e. at least one chelator; and
f. at least one cosmetically acceptable excipient,
wherein pectin, acacia gum, at least one neutralizing agent, and at least one divalent calcium species total sum weight concentration in said composition is in the range of 0.1-3.5%, said at least one chelator weight concentration in said composition is in the range of 0.025-0.1%, and pectin to acacia gum w/w ratio in said composition is 3:1 to 5:1 .

2. The composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein pectin to acacia gum w/w ratio in said composition is 4:1.

3. The composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said pectin is low methoxyl pectin.

4. The composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein
a. at least one neutralizing agent is selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine, diethanolamine, and monoethanolamine; and
b. at least one chelator is selected from the group consisting of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS), and 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP).

5. The composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said at least one cosmetically acceptable excipient is selected from the group consisting of:
a. at least one polymer having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.005-5%;
b. at least one emollient having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.001-10%;
c. at least one emulsifying agent having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.01-5%;
d. at least one preservative having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.001-2%;
e. at least one thickener having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.005-5%;
f. at least one humectant having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.01-10%;
g. water to make up to 100%; and
h. combinations thereof.

6. The composition as claimed in claim 5, wherein
a. at least one polymer is selected from the group consisting of at least one starch, at least one modified starch, at least one gum, at least one carbomer, at least one silicone based polymer, at least one acrylate, and at least one cellulose based polymer;
b. at least one emollient is selected from the group consisting of panthenol, tocopherol acetate, octyldodecanol, hexyl decanol, oleyl alcohol, decyloleate, isopropyl stearate, isopropyl palmitate, isopropyl myristate, hexyl laureate, dioctyl cyclohexane, PPG-15 stearyl ether, isohexadecane, stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, at least one mineral oil, at least one ester,at least one alcohol, at least one essential oil or extracts thereof, at least one silicone oil, at least one linear polydimethylsiloxane, at least one cyclic polydimethylsiloxane, and at least one volatile silicone;
c. at least one humectant is selected from the group consisting of at least one polyol, at least one biopolymer, at least one silicone oil, at least one silicone polymer, at least one cyclized derivative of silicone, at least one silicone, and at least one acrylate polymer;
d. at least preservative is selected from the group consisting of at least one paraben, 2-phenoxyethanol, sodium metabisulfite, sodium benzoate, benzyl alcohol, ethyl hexyl glycerin, at least one formaldehyde-releasing agent, at least one alkyltrimethylammonium bromide, and at least one haloalkynylcarbamates;
e. at least one emulsifying agent is selected from the group consisting of at least one oxyalkylenated fatty acid ester of at least one polyol, PEG-100 stearate & glyceryl stearate, at least one oxyalkylenated fatty acid ester of sorbitan, at least one oxyalkylenated (oxyethylenated and/or oxypropylenated) fatty alcohol ether, at least one alkoxylated or non-alkoxylated sugar ester, at least one sorbitan ester, at least one ester of at least one diacid, at least one ester of at least one fatty alcohol, at least one acrylate, at least one PEG based emulsifier, at least one polyglyceryl based emulsifier, at least one silicone, and at least one silicone dimethicone; and
f. at least one thickener is selected from the group consisting of at least one alkyloamide, carbomer, , cetearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, gelatin, at least one gum, at least one starch,at least one modified starch, magnesium aluminium silicates, ozocarite, paraffin, tragacanth,sodium alginate, and sodium acrylates copolymer (and) paraffinumliquidum (and) PPG-1 trideceth-6.

7. The stable cosmetic composition as claimed in claim 6, comprising:
a. sodium polyacrylate (and) dimethicone (and) cyclopentasiloxane (and) trideceth-6 (and) PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 1- 4%;
b. disodium EDTA having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.05-0.1%;
c. isopropyl palmitate having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.5-5%;
d. pectin having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.05-2.5%;
e. acacia gum having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.01-1%;
f. triethanolamine in quantity sufficient to neutralize the solution of pectin and acacia gum to pH in the range of 5.5-6;
g. calcium chloride having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.01-0.05%; and
h. water to make up to 100%.

The stable cosmetic composition as claimed in claim 7, further comprises at least one excipient selected from the group consisting of glycerin having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 1-10%, tocopherol acetate having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.01-2%, D-panthenol having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.05-5%,caprylic/capric triglyceride having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.5-5%, phenoxyethanol having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.05-2%; fragrance having weight concentration of 0.05-2%, and combinations thereof.

9. A method of making a stable cosmetic composition as claimed in claim 1, said method comprising:
a. contacting pectin and acacia gum in a w/w ratio in the range of 3:1-5:1 with water at a temperature in a range of 25-32°C and for 15-60 minutes to obtain a mixture A, wherein in mixture A, pectin and acacia gum to water w/w ratio is in the range of 1:10-1:150;
b. adding at least one neutralizer in quantity sufficient to mixture A to obtain a mixture B having a pH in the range of 5.5-6;
c. adding at least one divalent calcium species to mixture B to obtain a mixture C which is a clear gel; and
d. adding mixture C into said cosmetic base to obtain a stable cosmetic composition.

10. A method of making a stable cosmetic composition as claimed in claim 8, said method comprising:
a. contacting pectin and acacia gum in a w/w ratio of 4:1 with water at a temperature in a range of 25-32°C and for 15-60 minutes to obtain a mixture A, wherein in mixture A, pectin and acacia gum to water w/w ratio is in the range of 1:10-1:150;
b. contacting triethanolamine with mixture A to obtain a mixture B having pH in the range of 5.5-6;
c. contacting calcium chloride to mixture B to obtain a mixture C which is a clear gel; and
d. incorporating mixture C into a cosmetic base comprising: (a) sodium polyacrylate (and) dimethicone (and) cyclopentasiloxane (and) trideceth-6 (and) PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone; (b) disodium EDTA; (c) isopropyl palmitate; and (d) water to obtain said stable cosmetic composition.

11. A method of stable incorporation of high molecular weight acidic polysaccharides in cosmetic formulation(s), said method comprising:
a. obtaining at least one high molecular weight acidic polysaccharide;
b. obtaining at least one neutralizing agent;
c. obtaining at least one divalent calcium species;
d. contacting said at least one high molecular weight acidic polysaccharide with at least one neutralizing agent to obtain a mixture A, wherein pH of said mixture A is in the range of 5.5-6;
e. contacting at least one divalent calcium species with mixture A to obtain a mixture B, wherein at least one divalent calcium species weight concentration in said mixture B is in the range of 0.01-0.05%; and
f. contacting said mixture B with a cosmetic base comprising at least one ingredient to obtain a cosmetic formulation, wherein said cosmetic base essentially comprises at least one chelating agent,
wherein said at least one high molecular weight acidic polysaccharide weight concentration in said cosmetic formulation is in the range of 0.1-3%, and at least one chelating agent weight concentration in said cosmetic formulation is in the range of 0.025-0.1%.

12. The method as claimed in claim 11, wherein
a. at least one high molecular weight acidic polysaccharide is selected from the group consisting of pectin, and acacia gum, said at least one high molecular weight acidic polysaccharide having weight concentration in cosmetic formulation in the range of 0.1-3%;
b. at least one neutralizing agent is selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine, diethanolamine, and monoethanolamine, said at least one neutralizing agent having weight concentration in cosmetic formulation is in the range of 0.001-0.2%;
c. at least one divalent calcium species is selected from the group consisting of calcium chloride, calcium bromide, said at least one divalent calcium species weight concentration in cosmetic formulation is in the range of 0.005-0.25%; and
d. cosmetic base comprises at least one excipient selected from the group consisting of:
i. at least one polymer having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.005-5%, selected from the group consisting of at least one starch, at least one modified starch, at least one gum, at least one carbomer, at least one silicone based polymer, at least one acrylate, and at least one cellulose based polymer;
ii. at least one emollient having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.001-10%, selected from the group consisting of panthenol, tocopherol acetate, octyldodecanol, hexyl decanol, oleyl alcohol, decyloleate, isopropyl stearate, isopropyl palmitate, isopropyl myristate, hexyl laureate, dioctyl cyclohexane, PPG-15 stearyl ether, isohexadecane, stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, at least one mineral oil, at least one ester,at least one alcohol, at least one essential oil or extracts thereof, at least one silicone oil, at least one linear polydimethylsiloxane, at least one cyclic polydimethylsiloxane, and at least one volatile silicone;
iii. at least one humectant having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.01-10%, selected from the group consisting of at least one polyol, at least one biopolymer, at least one silicone oil, at least one silicone polymer, at least one cyclized derivative of silicone, at least one silicone, and at least one acrylate polymer;
iv. at least one preservative having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.001-2%, selected from the group consisting of at least one paraben, 2-phenoxyethanol, sodium metabisulfite, sodium benzoate, benzyl alcohol, ethyl hexyl glycerin, at least one formaldehyde-releasing agent, at least one alkyltrimethylammonium bromide, and at least one haloalkynylcarbamates;
v. at least one emulsifying agent having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.01-5%, selected from the group consisting of at least one oxyalkylenated fatty acid ester of at least one polyol, PEG-100 stearate & glyceryl stearate, at least one oxyalkylenated fatty acid ester of sorbitan, at least one oxyalkylenated (oxyethylenated and/or oxypropylenated) fatty alcohol ether, at least one alkoxylated or non-alkoxylated sugar ester, at least one sorbitan ester, at least one ester of at least one diacid, at least one ester of at least one fatty alcohol, at least one acrylate, at least one PEG based emulsifier, at least one polyglyceryl based emulsifier, at least one silicone, and at least one silicone dimethicone;
vi. at least one thickener having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.005-5%, selected from the group consisting of at least one alkyloamide, carbomer, cetearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, gelatin, at least one gum, at least one starch,at least one modified starch, magnesium aluminium silicates, ozocarite, paraffin, tragacanth,sodium alginate, and sodium acrylates copolymer (and) paraffinumliquidum (and) PPG-1 trideceth-6;
vii. at least one chelator having weight concentration in said composition in the range of 0.025-0.1%, selected from the group consisting of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS), and 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP);
viii. water to make up to 100%; and
ix. combinations thereof.
