Custard Apple Seed Extractor

Abstract: The present invention relates to the development of custard seed extractor which separates the seeds from the custard apple pulp. Separation of seeds from the pulp of custard apple is a major constraint in processing of custard apple. Present practice of removing seeds from pulp of custard apple is manual which increases microbial load, dis-colouration of pulp due to longer expose to air and time consuming. The custard apple seed extractor comprises of a brush type roller rotating inside perforated cylinder. De-seeded pulp is passing through the perforation of sieve and collects at the bottom of the machine. The seed outlet to collect the custard apple seeds separated from its pulp is provided at lower end of perforated cylinder. The slope is provided to the machine with the horizontal so that this slope helps the seeds to travel easily towards the seed outlet by the gravity.

COMPLETE
The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.

Field of Invention:
The present invention is related to fruit seed extracting device. More particularly the present invention is related to the device for extracting the seed from the pulp of custard apple fruit.
Background of the present invention:
The custard apple fruit is mostly used as a dessert fruit for its delicious taste and nutritive values. The pulp is used in preparation of ice-cream and beverages. As the main season of harvesting for the fruits is very short, there is usually glut leading to wastage and distress sale. Storage of the fresh fruits of custard apple has limitations, since it is perishable, and cold storage is not promising because of the development of unattractive brown colour on the skin which decreases its market value.
Therefore, pulp preservation is preferable. Separation of seeds from the pulp of custard apple is a major constraint in processing of custard apple. Present practice of removing seeds from pulp of custard apple is manual which increases microbial load, dis-colouration of pulp due to longer expose to air and time consuming. However, there are few fruit specific machines available in public domain that extracts seed from the pulp and/or fruit of Grape, tomato, pomegranate and raisin. Fruit seed extractor as disclosed by patent No. US.1083918 provides an inexpensive instrument by means of which seeds can be extracted from fruit with minimum loss of the meat of the fruit. But this seed extractor is more especially intended and designed for extracting pineapple seeds from its fruit. The disadvantage of this knowledge is that it removes the seed one by one from the fruit meat and not from pulp (more pasty).
Another document No. US.1834097 educates on automatic fruit juice, pulp and seed extractor wherein an apparatus is designed to be automatically operated, preferably by coin control, for the purpose of extracting the juice and seeds from oranges, grapefruit, lemons and similar fruits which are provided with a rind, skin

or covering capable of being firmly held by a chuck. But this apparatus is more complex and bulk and is intended especially for extracting juice from citrus fruits though it simultaneously extracts seeds from the juice and/or pulp mainly by automatic pressing and not by shearing action.
None of the prior art educates on the machine/device for separation of seed specifically from the pulp/fruit of custard apple. Therefore, the attempt has been made to develop a machine that extract the seeds from the custard apple fruit as herein described.
Objectives of the present invention:
The major objective of the present invention is to provide a seed extractor for custard apple fruit.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a machine which will not only extract the seeds from the custard apple fruit but also dispose of the pulp without deteriorating its quality.
Brief description of the figures:
The objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent when the disclosure is read in conjunction with the following figures, wherein
Figure 1 shows the schematic view of the custard apple seed extractor in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 shows the exploded view of the brush type roller of the separation chamber in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 3 shows the side view of the brush type roller shown in figure 2.

Figure 4 shows the exploded view of the tapered shaped perforated sheet metal cylinder having inside it a concentrically placed rotatable roller as the another embodiment of seed separation system.
Detailed description of the present invention:
Referring to figure 1, the custard apple seed extractor [13] comprises of a feed hopper [1], separation chamber (7) provided with chute (12) and seed outlet (6), suitable power source (14) and power transmission unit to the separation chamber. This whole assembly is mounted on a single sturdy frame (11) constructed out of stainless steel SS 304 angles. The feed hopper (1) is fitted at the top side of a separation chamber (7) wherein the seeded pulp is fed the machine through feed chamber (1) for the separation of pulp and seed in the separation chamber constructed out of SS 304 sheet (7). The separation chamber comprises of a brush type roller (3) rotating inside perforated cylinder (2.) inside the separation chamber (7). A chute (12) is provided at a bottom side of the separation chamber (7) for collection of de-seeded pulp and seed outlet (6) is provided on the side of the separation chamber (7) at its bottom edge. The seed outlet (6) to collect the custard apple seeds separated from its pulp is provided at lower end of perforated cylinder (2). The slope of 15 to 25 degrees is given to the said separation chamber (7) with the horizontal so that this slope helps the seeds to travel easily towards the outlet (6) by the gravity. The separation of seeds takes place based on the set clearance between the roller (3) and the perforated cylinder (2). The specific clearance according the seed size is given between the roller and perforated cylinder to separate the seeds from custard apple pulp. The said clearance between the sieve and the roller is optimized based on the physical properties of the seed.
For the operation of the seed extractor (13), an electric motor (14) is provided. The said motor (14) is fitted to the frame structure (11) with suitable means in such way the output shaft of the motor is in alignment with the roller shaft (4) of the separation chamber (7). The output shaft of the motor has a pulley (9) which is coupled through the V-belt drive (10) to the pulley (8) provided on the roller

shaft (stainless steel] (4), thus making the roller (3) to rotate when the electric motor (14) is put ON. Custard apple fruits are cut into two halves and seeded pulp scooped out. The seeded pulp is fed in hopper (1) which is de-seeded inside the separation chamber (7). The de-seeded pulp comes out through pulp chute (12) and seeds are collected at outlet (6).
In another embodiment of the present invention, the separation chamber consists of tapered shaped perforated sheet metal cylinder made up of SS 304 grade (2) having inside it a concentrically placed rotatable roller (3). The perforation of the cylinder is slotted type. The said roller (3) consist of bristle (15) which fixed on the surface of roller (16), the said roller being fixed on the horizontal shaft (4) being rotatably fixed on support structure (11) and is driven by a prime mover (14). The bristle (15) of the said roller (3) is made up of nylon material. The said perforated cylinder is divided into two halves and coupled together by fixing means for easy dismantling and cleaning of the roller after the operation of the machine.
The custard apple seed extractor of the present invention as herein described is very useful for the small farmers and entrepreneurs. The seed extractor is very easy to manufacture and operate. The most important technical advantage is that the separation of the seed and pulp by extractor is more hygienic than the manual separation method. The washing and cleaning of the machine is easy as it can be dismantled easily after the operation.
It should be understood that the present invention is not to be limited by the exact details of the illustrated embodiment. However, it is to be taken as the preferred example of the invention and that various changes may be resorted to by a person skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. Also, the terminologies used herein are for the purpose of description and should not be regarded as limiting.
