Abstract: Design and development of special sleeve for holding micro boring head on face plate housing of horizontal boring machine substituting the machine spindle which normally does such job but developed axial and longitudinal play due to long use, leading to error beyond limits of tolerance. One sleeve (01) having the same outside dia and depth as the parallel inside hole and depth of boring head (02) on face plate is used as holding arrangement for the micro boring head (03). The micro boring head having an outside taper of given dimension perfectly fits into inside taper of the said sleeve (01). The micro boring head (03) holds the micro boring bar (04) and cutting tool (05) for boring precision micro holes within desired level of accuracy.
FIELD OF INVENTION:
The invention generally relates to a horizontal boring machine and
particularly to an attachment of the same machine used for boring micro holes with
desired accuracy. Normally such precision jobs are done by the machine spindle. But
due to prolonged use such spindles develop some axial and longitudinal play leading
to errors beyond specified limit.
BACKGROUND:
Horizontal boring machine uses its spindle for boring micro holes of desired
accuracy. But due to prolonged use such spindles develop axial and longitudinal play
leading to errors in bored holes beyond limits of tolerance. Such problem has serious
consequences as it leads to loss of quality, machine idle time and upsets the
production schedule. This problem possibly could be solved by using costlier CNC
machine. However, this would substantially add to running cost. This problem was
solved in the present invention by designing an attachment which helps to use the
existing boring machine for the same purpose without sacrificing efficiency and
avoiding machine down time. The attachment made it possible to utilize the boring
head on the face plate of machine instead of the spindle as an holding arrangement of
micro boring head. Precisely this attachment is a sleeve outside dia and length of
which perfectly fits with the boring head on the face plate in one hand and the inside
taper of the same fitted with the outside taper of the micro boring head on the other.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION.
One object of the invention is to add a new feature to the machine to restore
one lost function of the machine due to prolonged use over a very long length of time.
Another object of the invention is to revitalize the same machine without
compromising quality and save major financial investment.
Still another object of the invention is to rule out any slippage in the production
schedule on account of outage of the machine and avoid loss of costly production
time.

DESCRIPTION:
In the present invention, boring head on the face plate of the machine (02)
has been used as an holding arrangement of the micro boring head (03) with the help
of the specially developed (01) sleeve, the subject of present invention. Boring head
on the face plate has parallel inside hole of a given diameter & depth and the micro
boring head (03) has a given tapered holding arrangement. As such micro boring
head cannot be directly mounted on the face plate (normally micro boring head is
mounted on the spindle). So for holding micro boring head a sleeve has been
designed & dimensioned so that it has an outside diameter & depth which matches
with the given diameter & depth of boring head of the face plate (fig 2). Inside taper
of the sleeve as shown in fig (2) has been so designed as to match the outside taper
of the micro boring head of figure (4). The sleeve is clamped at one end in face plate
housing in locked position and the other end houses the micro boring head as shown
in fig(3). Micro boring bar (04) along with cutting tool which is used in conjunction
with micro boring head is shown in fig 5. Boring head on the face plate was brought
exactly on the axis of the spindle and locked in position to avoid any shifting during
drilling & boring operation.
WE CLAIM:
1. An attachment for a horizontal boring machine comprising a sleeve (01) fitted
to a boring head on a face plate housing of horizontal boring machine in one
end, and to a micro boring head (03) of the said boring machine on the other
end for boring precision holes within close range of tolerance, thereby
substituting the function of the spindle of said boring machine.
2. The sleeve (01) as claimed in claim 1 has an outside dia and depth that
perfectly matches with parallel inside hole and depth of the boring head on
face plate (02) so that it can hold the micro boring head (03) on the face plate
housing.
3. The sleeve as claimed in 1 & 2 has an inside taper which is identical with the
outside taper of the micro boring head (03), so that the micro boring head
perfectly fits into the sleeve (01).
4. The sleeve as claimed in claim 1 is suitably locked inside the face plate housing
to prevent any shifting or slide during drilling & boring.
5. A sleeve (01) to be used in a horizontal boring machine for mounting micro
boring head (03) on the face plate housing, in replacement of the spindle with
other arrangement as substantially described herein with accompanying
drawings.
