An Improved Dressing Device For A Cylindrical Grinding Machine

Abstract: According to the invention there is provided an improved dressing unit which is configured such that instead of straight body parallel to the base it is machined in taper portion in such a way that the dressing point of the dressing unit is capable of approaching the grinding wheel without fouling with the shaft. Thus, the requirement for removing of the job every time is avoided whenever dressing is required and setting time is saved. The invention further enables grinding of the shaft with the dressing unit disposed on the grinding machine during the grinding operation.

Specification

-2-
FIELD OF INVENTION
The invention pertains to the field of grinding operation using cylindrical grinding
machines. This grinding machine is used for the grinding of pump shafts to
achieve required degree of accuracy and surface finish. A dressing unit is
generally supplied with the grinding machine which plays key role in maintaining
the quality of the grinding wheels used in the grinding machine.
BACK GROPUND OF INVENTION
While carrying out the grinding operation, periodic dressing of the grinding wheel
is required whenever the quality of the grinding wheel deteriorates. A 'dressing
unit', is supplied along with the machine which is used for this purpose. The
grindable shaft is required to be unloaded from the grinding machine ever/time
when the wheel is to dressed. Due to repeated unloading and loading of the
pump shaft during the grinding operation, a possibility to develop a Yun-out' on
the shaft cannot be avoided which in turn leads to run out on rotor and
consequent deterioration of pump performance.
Further, due to a number of settings involved, the cycle time is more and results
in delayed job completion. In existing design, the body height is more than the
gap between the shaft and the bed of the machine, the shape of the body is
straight and it fouls with the shaft. Accordingly, the dressing unit cannot be
disposed on the machine bed during the grinding operation.

-3-
OBJECTS OF INVENTION
It is therefore an object of the invention to propose an improved dressing unit
adaptable to the grinding machines which eliminates the problems of prior art.
Another object of the invention is to propose an improved dressing unit
adaptable to the grinding machines which is enabled to enter from under the
shaft and reach the grinding wheel for dressing.
Yet another object of the invention is to propose an improved dressing unit
adaptable to the grinding machines which eliminates repeated loading and
unloading of the grindable shaft during grinding operation.
A still another object of the invention is to propose an improved dressing unit
adaptable to the grinding machines which reaches the grinding cycle time and
improves the quality of grainding.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
According to the invention there is provided an improved dressing unit which is
configured such that instead of straight body parallel to the base it is machined
in taper portion in such a way that the dressing point of the dressing unit is
capable of approaching the grinding wheel without fouling with the shaft. Thus,
the requirement for removing of the job every time is avoided whenever dressing
is required and setting time is saved. The invention further enables grinding of
the shaft with the dressing unit disposed on the grinding machine during the
grinding operation.
