Abstract: LCA aircraft is having fuel tanks in the structure build, CFC wings and Drop tanks. Draining fuel is one of the frequent activities in military aircraft and defueling needs to be done efficiently without spilling on the ground. Hence a dedicated simple tool was required to be developed for ease of use in assembly shop. The new tool is designed to draining the residual fuel inside aircraft wing tanks and drop tanks. Regular activity of fuel drain was. carried out by removing the drain valve fitted to bottom of wings and drop tanks. Frequent removal and installation of drain valve will reduce the life of the component. The new tool provides a solution for this tedious work and can defuel wing tanks and drop tanks without removing drain valve
DESCRIPTION
TECHNICAL FIELD
The invention describes a tool to defuel the residual fuel from aircraft fuel tanks and drop tanks without frequent opening of Non-return Valve/Drain Valve in LCA aircraft.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
To defuel the ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) from aircraft wing fuel tanks and drop tanks drain
valve has to be removed. Frequent installation and reinstallation of valve will cause damage to
the drain valves made up of plastic material. Hence it was essential to design a common t'ool
which properly fits to the valve at different locations of wing and drop tanks to drain out fuel.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
‘
The fuel drain valve fitted to wing and drop tank is to'be opened to dry out the residual fuel
available after flight activities. In some cases this fuel needs to be drained completely to carry
out repair and other works. For draining this fuel, the drain valve is removed completely from
the thread fitting. A special tool is being used for this purpose. Frequent removal of valve may
cause démages to structure as we" as to the valve. This may cause fuel leakage during testing
or flight. The new tobl designed can fit intp the drain valve and make opening for fuel drain.
Horizontal pin at the top of the plunger of the tooi can hold the tool to body of the valve. This
can ensure hand free operation of defueling. Operator can do parallel activities during the dry
out of fuel in different tanks.
PROCESS DETAIL DESCRIPTION
Tool was designed to accommodate the internal dimensions of drain valve, tool was fabricated
with Aluminum alloy material to reduce the weight. Cross pin was shrink fitted to the plunger of
the tool to avoid dislocation (Tool drawing is attached in annexure-Ill). Cross pin of the tool will ensure proper engagement to the drain valve. Knurling was carried out at bottom portion of
the tool to have enough grip to operate. Fuel will pass through the plunger down to the main
body through the holes provided.
