Abstract: The invention relates to design and development of a chemical cabinet to provide safe and ventilated storage of chemicals. The storage structure should be a sturdy and resistant to acids, solvent spill and rusting with proper ventilation of fumes from chemicals and having maximum utilization of foot print area with adjustable storage for various packaging sizes of standard chemical packaging.
TITLE OF THE INVENTION
Development of a chemical cabinet to provide safe and ventilated storage of chemicals
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to chemical cabinet for storage of chemicals efficiently
and safely in the working area where the chemical fumes, if not removed properly, can
affect the air quality.
More particularly the present invention relates to development of a storage structure
that provides safe and ventilated storage of chemicals.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The invention has evolved by working experience in chemicals area where chemical
fumes attack all the structure apart from the polypropylene (PP), Teflon structures.
Also, as some working quantity of chemicals is required in the area, storage capability
has to be established in the area.
Apart from that, the space constraint and the need for an economic solution paved the
way to the invention.
Various chemical cabinets are available in the market that can store chemicals safely in
the working area. Patent search has also been carried out for related products and
ideas. The idea claimed in the patent application is distinct from the prior arts or the
available product in the following regards.
1. Support structure is unique as it is both low cost and acid/ rust resistant. In some of
the prior products available, the support structure is metallic which makes it susceptible
to rusting and damage especially in case of chemical spillage and the structure
fabricated completely from plastic are considerably expensive.
2. The ventilation scheme is unique to ventilate all the shelves and reduce the footprint
area for a cabinet with similar capability. The double walled structure at the back for
ventilation in prior art uses larger quantity of expensive PP and increases the footprint
area.
The ventilation schemes in the prior art use perforated racks that reduces the strength
of the racks or demands a thicker sheet which increase the cost of the product.
Also, in case of spillage, bottles stored in the lower section may become contaminated.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
The object of the present invention is to facilitate storage of chemicals efficiently and
safely in the working area where the chemicals fumes, if not removed properly, can
affect the air quantity.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention is born out of the necessity to provide an economic solution to storing
chemicals in the working area. The invention constitutes:
1. The concept of creating a cheap, sturdy and acid resistant structure by completely
encapsulating mild steel (MS) support structure in polypropylene (PP) sheets.
2. The concept of fume ventilation scheme by creating air draft without perforating the
racks or providing a double walled structure at the back is unique.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
1. The cabinet will have body frame and support structures including removable racks
made up of mild steel (MS) which will be entirely sealed by polypropylene (PP) welded
sheets so that no metallic part is exposed.
2. The thickness of PP sheet for walls and racks will at least 5mm.
3. The cabinet will have a provision at the top for connection to 5-7 inches diameter
(OD) ventilation exhaust line.
4. The front door(s) will be side hinged and with transparent glass panes so that the
contents of the shelves are visible, as shown in Figure (1). Stiffeners may be provided
in glass panes for support. All the hinges will be externally mounted such that the racks
may be removed from the cabinet without any hindrances.
5. There will be support on both sides of the cabinet at 6 different heights for resting
the removable racks, as shown in the Figure 2.
6. There will be vents on both sides of the cabinet at the heights shown in the Figure 2.
The dimension of the slot will be 30cm (L) x 2 cm (H). The slots will be covered by an
awning to direct the air flow.
7. There will be 3 removable shelves in the cabinet which will be able to support no
less than 50 kilograms each. The floor of the cabinet will be able to support 100
kilograms.
8. The racks will have no less than 1/16" MS sheet totally embedded in PP sheets from
all sides such that MS sheet is not exposed from any side.
9. The dimension of each rack is 70 cm x 40 cm with 5 cm wide, 60 cm long slot at the
back for ventilation as shown in Figure 4. There will be an elevated structure at the
back of the rack(s) to keep bottles from blocking the slotted area.
10. The maximum outside dimensions of the cabinet will be 100 cm (L) x 60 cm (W) x
220 cm (H), excluding the duct for connection to the exhaust. The size ensures that the
racks are not too long so that the sagging may take place and that maximum quantity
of chemicals is stored at a comfortable working height.
WE CLAIM
1. A chemical cabinet to provide safe and ventilated storage of chemicals comprising:
a body frame;
a plurality of support structures;
a plurality of removable racks characterized in that the removable metallic racks are
entirely sealed by polypropylene (PP) weld sheets so that no metallic parts remain
exposed.
2. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the thickness of polypropylene
(PP) sheet for walls and racks shall be at least 5 mm.
3. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the top of the cabinet has
provision for connection to a 5-7 inch diameter (OD) exhaust line for ventilation
purpose.
4. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the front doors shall be side
hinged and front face equipped with transparent glass panes for easy visibility of the
contents inside.
5. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the glass panes are supported
by stiffeners.
6. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the hinges are externally
mounted so that the racks can be removed from the cabinet without any hindrance.
7. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the sides of the cabinet are
provided with plurality of supports for resting of the removable racks.
8. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the sides of the cabinet are
provided with vents, in which the slots are covered by an awning to direct the air flow.
9. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the racks are made of 1/16" MS
sheets totally embedded in poly propylene sheets from all sides such that MS sheet is
not exposed from any side.
10. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the rack of the cabinet is
equipped with slots on the rear portion for proper ventilation.
11. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein elevated structures are provided
in the rack before the slots to keep the bottles from blocking the slotted area.
12. The chemical cabinet as claimed in claim 1 wherein height, length and width and of
the cabinet are maintained within a range of 180cm-220cm, 80cm-120cm and 60cm -
80cm respectively and 03 number of shelves for avoiding sagging and for ensuring
maximum working space at a comfortable working height.
