Abstract: During the process of aircraft overhaul; several units are required to be dismantled from the aircraft. Gear Box Assembly (2) is one of the units required to be disassembled from the aircraft. Removing GBA (2) is mandatory during overhaul. The present process is time consuming, and also damage prone and required special skills for removal of shaft (6) in GBA(2). To address this a portable device specially designed for removing spline shaft (6) of GBA (2) in aircraft is evolved. Use of the evolved tool has greatly enhanced the shaft removal process efficiency and also mitigated risks due to damage of GBA (2) and its shaft (6) by adopting universal process for removing the shaft in aircraft.

Device for Removal of Spline Shaft of Gear Box Assembly in Aircraft
1. Title of the invention
Title of invention: Device for the removal of spline shaft of Gear Box Assembly in aircraft
2. Field of invention:
The present invention relates to an apparatus for the removal of shaft which connects Aircraft Gear Box Assembly (GBA) to pumps mounted on it.
3. Background of invention
Aircrafts are overhauled after predetermined no. of flights for its life extension. During the process of overhaul, several units are required to be dismantled from the aircraft. GBA is one.of the units required to be disassembled from the aircraft.
GBA (2) is a gearbox assembly that forms part of a gas turbine engine (1). It drives the various accessories viz. fuel pumps (3), hydraulic pumps (5j, generator (4) etc. that are otherwise essentia! for the operation of engine of the aircraft where it is mounted. During dismantling of aircraft all the pumps are to be removed from it. The schematic view of GBA with mounted pumps is shown in the fig. no. 1.
Splines (6) are grooves or teeth on a shaft that match up with groove or teeth on another component to transmit torque. While removing the spline shaft from GBA (2) for dismantling as mandatory requirement for overhaul. The removal process is very time consuming due to interference fits, dirt and corrosion in shaft and also requires operator with special skill to do the job. Also a defined process is not available for removal of shaft, which results in damage of shaft and gear box assembly; resulting in non-availability of gear box for aircraft which in turn increases aircraft down time.
4. Prior art description and their limitation
Presently there are three jaw and four jaw pullers available for the removal of threaded shafts. The inventions in the related field are US 20150101168A1 and US 3087236A .But for the removal of spline shafts there is no specific tool.
5. Summary of the present invention
To address the above problem a special tool is designed. The shaft puller device described herein includes ' two separate plates (15) & (16) that are attached with screw (10) & (11) .On each plate studs (7) &(9) are mounted on plate (15 )&(16) . A groove (8) made on the plate so that shaft can be inserted in that. The shaft to be removed is inserted in the groove. After that screws of plates are tightened. After insertion of shaft in the slot studs (13) are tightened with the help of rotating pins 16). A force mounted on the clamping device allows a force to be applied on the shaft in a direction parallel to the axis of shaft. Clamping force provided by the two fastening members combines the tool and shaft into one integrated unit. When the studs are tightened the shaft tend to remove out from the body of AAGB saving time and efforts.
The device and process will be applicable for other aircraft's having AGB and their accessories.
6. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF DRAWING
Drawing for AGB connected to various accessories
In the schematic drawing Gear Box assembly with pumps mounted on it is shown which are attached with spline shaft. The spline shaft is to be removed from the newly devised tool.
Drawing for the newly devised tool used for the removal of shaft.
Figure no. 2 & 3 consists of plate, studs, screws and rotating pin. There are two holes (10) & (11) on the side of the plate .They are attached through screws.,A groove (8) and (12) is made on the plate in which shaft (6) can be inserted. There are two holes on the opposite sides of plate in which two studs are mounted, There is a hole on the stud in which a pin (16) for rotating is attached. The device evolved was. used in a fighter-aircraft. It was found that the shaft removal using the evolved tool was less.fatigue as compared to existing procedure. Also, No damage to the shaft and the body of AGB and shafts was noticed. The process adopted with the device resulted in time and cost saving. The use of device and process is easy, universal and eco-friendly.
