TECHNICAL FIELD
[002] The present subject matter described herein generally relates to a portable jig for drilling machine and more specifically it relates to a drilling machine jig for onboard drilling of a bolt.
BACKGROUND
[003] Castle nut and bolts are installed in a thrust block and EPM assembly of a submarine. For locking of castle nut with the bolt a locking pin is inserted through the grooves of the castle nut and through a hole in the bolt. However during installation of equipment the grooves of the castle nut and hole of the bolt may not align to insert the locking pin hence it is a requirement to drill the hole on the bolt after installation of the equipment. Further, it may not be possible to drill the bolts in assembled condition using a drilling machine as the space for drilling the bolts is very limited and confined. Even if the operator tries to drill the holes by holding on a vice in the limited space, it might get slight mismatch at the time of assembling it to its respective position. In the conventional method, after assembling the castle nut with the bolt, marking for hole is done on the bolt. The castle nut is then removed and the hole is drilled on the marked position. In this case there may be mismatch of the hole axis.
[004] Thus, there is a need of an apparatus or device that may help in drilling the holes with precision, reduce time taken to drill for each bolt, reduce man power and man days, and drill bolts at its prior location.

[0014] As discussed above a bolt fastened with a castle nut needs to be drilled onboard after getting marking for the hole to be drilled. However it may not be possible to drill the bolts in assembled condition using a drilling machine as the space for drilling the bolts is very limited and confined. The present subject matter discloses a portable jig to hold a drilling machine to drill hole in the bolt while the bolt is assembled with the castle nut. The portable jig comprises of a jig plate to secure the drilling machine and the castle nut. The jig plate comprises a side portion configured to receive a tightening bolt. The jig plate further comprises a round bush to receive the castle nut wherein the castle nut is securing the bolt to be drilled. A slot is formed in the jig plate to secure the drilling machine wherein the slot is positioned between the side portion and the round bush. A drilling bit of the drilling machine is aligned with a groove of the castle nut by adjusting the round bush and feed is provided to the drilling machine by rotating the tightening bolt and hence a hole is drilled in the bolt while the bolt is assembled to the castle nut.
[0015] Hence the present subject matter provides advantages such as reduced time and less human efforts to drill a hole on a bolt fastened with a castle nut over the conventional method.
[0016] Referring now to figure 1, a portable jig 100 for a drilling machine 102 is shown. The portable jig 100 comprises a jig plate 110. The jig plate 110 comprises a side portion 112, a round bush 118 and a slot 116. The side portion 112 is configured to receive a tightening bolt 114. The round bush 118 holds a castle nut 106 at a desired orientation. A screw 120 is provided on the round bush 118 to lock the orientation of the castle nut 106. In assembled condition a bolt 108 is fastened with the castle nut 106 and the bolt 108 is required to be drilled in that position. The slot 116 is formed in between the side portion 112 and the round bush 118. The drilling machine 102 is secured in the slot 116 as shown in figure 2.
[0017] Now referring to figure 2, the drilled machine 102 secured in the portable jig 100 is shown. The drilling machine 102 is configured to slide to and fro in the slot 116 to drill a hole in the bolt 108. The castle nut 106 is secured in the round bush 118 and the bolt 108 is assembled with the castle nut 106. In the assembled condition a hole is needed to be drilled in the bolt 108 to insert a lock pin. The round bush 118 of the jig plate 110 is rotated to align a groove 106a of the castle nut 106 with a drill bit 104 of the drilling machine 102. The screw 120 may be screwed to fix the orientation of the castle nut 108 with respect to the drill bit 104. The tightening bolt 114 may be operated to provide feed to the drilling machine 102 so as to finish the drilling of hole in the bolt 108. As the tightening bolt 114 is operated, the drilling machine 102 slides in the slot 116 of the jig plate 110. The tightening bolt 114 also provides support to the drilling machine 102 during the drilling operation to prevent vibrations of the drilling machine 102.
[0018] In an embodiment of the present subject matter, the drilling machine 102 is an angular type drilling machine to enable the operation to be performed in a limited and confined space.
[0019] In an embodiment of the present subject matter, the portable jig 100 may be aligned in any orientation based on the position of the castle nut 106.
[0020] In an embodiment of the present subject matter, the drill bit 104 is chosen based on the required size of the hole to be drilled.
[0021] In an embodiment of the present subject matter, the jig plate 110 is made of a metal.
[0022] Exemplary embodiments discussed above may provide certain advantages. Though not required to practice aspects of the disclosure, these advantages may include the following.
