DESC:FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the field of speed limit alert system for road transport vehicles. More particularly, the present invention relates to the field of driver assist speed limit alert system for road transport vehicles in response to the speed limit restrictions prevailing on the different road sections.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
A vehicle speed governer is a device used to control the speed of the engine in order to limit the vehicle speed to the pre-specified value. Strigent speed practices are followed to pre-set the speed limits (i.e, static speed limit) in vehicles and the static speed limits vary depending on the type of vehicle. A typical speed limit alert/speed governor installed in the vehicle is to alert the driver and to control the vehicle speed based on the factory set value (i.e. 80 kmph/static speed) as per rules of Road Transport Authority.
Conversely, speed limits vary depending on the type of location such as intercity roads, express roads, state and national highway roads and vehicle type (i.e, Two wheelers, Commercial vehicles, Passenger vehicles, etc.,). Therefore, static speed limits fail to suite different road speeds due to dynamic road environments. In the light of the above, vehicle drivers are instructed to maintain speed limits based the locations and vehicle types by providing them with sign boards to give information about the speed limits.
The speed limit sign boards are installed at different locations on the road sides in order to notify the driver of the vehicle to provide instructions on the speed limit. Although the sign boards provides information of speed limit applicable to the particular stretch, drivers may neglect the speed signboards inadvertently/intenionally. Some drivers may rash drive (80 kmph or according to the vehicle type) inspite of that he/she knew the city speed limit and thereby resulting accident.
On the other hand, if speed of the vehicle is pre-set and limited to lower speeds by using governor device/speed limiting device, then transportation may not effective due to the constraint lower speeds which further decreases the transport efficiency. Automated driving system can be installed in vehicles to control the speed limit but such system cannot be adapted in dynamic roads and leads to increase in expense of the vehicle.
Accordingly, there exist a need for a low cost driver assist speedlimit alert system for road transport vehicles to assist the drivers for providing information on the speed limit restrictions prevailing on different road sections.

DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
According to the primary embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a driver assist speed limit alert system (100) for road transport vehicles which provides alert on speed limit to the drivers from the speed limit sign boards using radio frequency. The invention uses Bluetooth (BLE) enabled speed limit sign boards as shown in figure 1. Normally, the speed limit sign boards (101) are installed on the sides of the road to notify the driver of the vehicle on the speed limit prevailing in that particular section of the road. A transmitter device (102) is installed in the speed limit signboards (101) containing the speed limit data of the section of road which is configured through a mobile or handheld device with authentication through server (140) (for example, 45kmph speed limit). As shown in figure 1 and 2, the transmitter device (102) comprising a Bluetooth Low Energy enabled device (103) powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (104) which is provided to supply power to the transmitter device (102). Further, a mini-solar panel (105) is fixated on the speed limit signboard (101) to recharge the lithium-ion battery during the daylight.
A Bluetooth enabled Driver Information System [DIS] is integrated and disposed inside a vehicle (110). The transmitter device (102) in the speed limit signboards (101) is configured to transfer dynamic speed limit information wirelessly to Bluetooth enabled integrated Driver Information System [DIS] (111a). Initially, the transmitter device (102) is pre-configured with factory set value. The speed limit information in the transmitted device (102) is modified based on the speed limit signboards (101) by configuring the data through mobile or handheld device. The Bluetooth enabled DIS (111a) is configured to wirelessly receive the dynamic speed limit information from the transmitter device (102) while the vehicle (110) reaches the vicinity of the respective speed limit signboards (101).
An Engine Control Unit [ECU] (112) is fitted to the vehicle (110) and is configured with the Bluetooth enabled DIS (111a) through a Control Area Network [CAN] (114). Further, a speed sensor (113) is disposed inside the vehicle (110) and connected to the ECU (112). The speed sensor (113) acquires the current vehicle speed of the vehicle during driving and transfers the current speed information to the ECU (112).
As the vehicle approaches the speed limit signboards (101), the ECU (112) compares the dynamic speed limit information received from the transmitter device (102) in the speed limit signboards (101) and current speed of the vehicle through the speed sensor (113). The Bluetooth enabled DIS (111a) provides visual and audio alerts of the dynamic speed limit information based on the inputs provided by ECU (112) to the driver of the vehicle if the vehicle speed is more than the permitted speed stipulated by the respective speed limit signboard (101).
As shown in figure 3 and 4, according to another embodiment of the present invention, a standalone Bluetooth enabled module (111c) is installed in the vehicle (110). The Bluetooth enabled module (111c) is configured to the DIS (111b) through the Controller Area Network (CAN) (114). The standalone Bluetooth enabled module (111c) is configured to wirelessly receive the dynamic speed limit information from the speed limit information transmitter device (102) fitted in the speed limit sign boards (101). The dynamic speed limit information is acquired by the DIS (111b) from the Bluetooth enabled module (111c) is further transferred to the ECU (112) for comparing the speed limits.
As illustrated in figure 5, the current speed limit exceeding the dynamic speed limit is shown in different color and an audio alert is also provided by the DIS (111a or 111b). Further, the current speed limit of the road is also displayed for information to driver in the DIS (1111a or 111b).
As shown in figure 6, assuming that the speed of the vehicle exceeds the dynamic speed limit, the DIS (111a or 111b) provides visual and audio alerts of the dynamic speed limit information based on the inputs provided by ECU (112). On the course of driving the vehicle (110), when the vehicle (110) approaches different speed limit signboards (101) in the road, the ECU (112) compares the dynamic speed limits of the particular signboards (101) with the current speed of the vehicle and alerts the driver through the DIS (111a or 111b). Further a Bluetooth enabled user device (120) with a Global System for Cellular network [2G/3G/4G/5G] (130) of the drivers is wirelessly connected to the Bluetooth enabled DIS (111a) or DIS (111b) through the Bluetooth enabled module (111c). The driver is alerted through Bluetooth enabled user device (120) by the DIS (111a or 111b) if the vehicle speed exceeds the dynamic speed limit.
Further, the user device (120) is connected to a server (140) in which the event of speed limit violations are stored in the server (140) with location and time stamp by the user device (120) through the Cellular network [2G/3G/4G/5G] (130).
