THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION PARTICULARLY DESCRIBES THE INVENTION AND THE MANNER IN WHICH IT IS TO BE PERFORMED
FIELD OF THE PRESENT INVENTION:-
The present invention is related to the automotive body systems. More particularly the present invention is related to the dual side opening door hinge for vehicle wherein door hinge act as a door hinge and also as a lock to lock the door of a vehicle.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION:-
It is an object of the invention to provide a hinge for dual side opening door to automobile vehicle so as to open door from either side for better ergonomics. It is also object of the invention to make assembly of door to the body is easier and the time taken for the assembly is also less.
It is also object of the invention to eliminate use of separate door latch system by integrating latch within hinge.
STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION:-
Accordingly the invention provides a dual side opening door hinge comprises of a door mounted and a body mounted hinge; the said body mounted hinge which is fitted to the body has a locking part, with pair of engaging teeth at distant on the external surface, able to revolve about the axis, mounted over a shaft held between a pair of mounting brackets, to be locked to the door mounted hinge; the said door mounted hinge consists a semicircular shape member having pivot at both ends rigidly held a by bracket, a pair locking arm, having curvature that of the said semicircular member with rounded free end provided with notch near to the said free end, pivoted to the said pivot of the door mounted hinge at both ends with a spring bias between the locking arm and the door mounted hinge so as to keep locking arms fully aligned to the said door mounted hinge so as the said teeth engaging to the said notch to prevent locking part release normally; a pair cable engaged to the said locking arms connected to the door opening handles, provided t at inside and outside to the door of vehicle, enabled to actuate for moving locking arm away from
alignment, against spring bias, for disengaging of locking tooth from the notch so as to release from the said locking part

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT INVENTION:-

Current vehicles have door which can be opened about a hinge axis in one side and the latch is placed on the other side of the door.
Referring to figures 1 to 3, in the model shown below, the door can open on either side of the door and can lock on the either side. The hinge which is shown below can acts as a door hinge as well as a door lock.
The invention comprises of a door mounted and a body mounted hinge. The body mounted hinge which is fitted to the body has a locking part called lock where the door mounted hinge gets locked. The lock in the body mounted hinge can also revolve about the axis of it. The locking part of the door is locking arm which is pivoted to the door mounted hinge. A spring is connected to the locking arm and the door mounted hinge.
Referring to figures 4 and 5 a dual side opening door hinge comprises of a door mounted and a body mounted hinge; the said body mounted hinge which is fitted to the body has a locking part 1, with pair of engaging teeth 12 at distant on the external surface, able to revolve about the axis, mounted over
a shaft 10 held between a pair of mounting brackets 2, to be locked to the door mounted hinge. The said door mounted hinge consists a semicircular shape member having pivot 17 at both ends rigidly held a by bracket 6, a pair locking arms 3, having curvature that of semicircular member with rounded free end provided with notch 13 near to the said free end, pivoted to the said pivot 17 of the body mounted hinge at both ends with a spring bias between the locking arm and the door mounted hinge so as to keep locking arms fully aligned to the said door mounted hinge so as the said teeth 12 engaging to the said notch 13 to prevent locking part release normally. A pair cable 4 engaged to the said locking arms connected to the door opening handles provided at inside and outside of vehicle, enabled to actuate for moving locking arm away from alignment, against spring 9 bias, for disengaging of locking tooth 12 from the notch so as to release the said locking part.
The said locking part 1 of body mounted a cylindrical shape with pair of said engaging teeth 12 at distant formed on external surface and having internal diameter having partial segmental cut at opposite mounted over the said shaft 10 having a pair of ribs 11 at opposite to restrict the over rotation of the lock. The said locking part of body mounted provided with internal partial segmental cut to open the door preferably with a rotation through 70 degrees.
The locking arm 4 consists of a base, identical to the shape of semicircular door hinge tip, provided with a single pivot 15 to fit into the gap between pair of pivots 17 provided at the said hinge tip and a rounded and curved free end with notch 13 facing to opposite lock arm 4.
The spring bias held between a pair of spring holder plates 18, 16 fixed to the said door hinge and locking arm 4 respectively. The said bias spring 9 is tension spring.
The said inside handle 7 and out side handle 8 made of plate type with top pivoted and the outer cable fixed to the inner handle 7 and inner of cable fixed to the outer handle 8.
The free end of lock arm is provided with cable holding slot 18 for attaching cable inner wire.
The figures 6 to 15 illustrates all features of invention as described above as figures are self illustrative .
This dual opening hinge is placed on either side of the door. During door closing, the locking arm of the door mounted hinge gets locked to the lock of the body mounted hinge. During door opening, the locking arm gets widen which unlocks it from the lock in the body mounted hinge and now the door is free to open. This widening of the locking arm is because of the cable connected to it from the outer handle. Another dual hinge which is fitted on the other side of the door now acts as a hinge for door opening. In that hinge the lock in the body mounted hinge revolves about its axis to act as a hinge. The ribs provided in the body mounted hinge restrict the over travel of the lock. For example if the door is to open till 70 degree means, then the ribs in the body mounted hinge allows the lock to rotate 70 degree and not more than that. The rib in the body mounted hinge and the under cut which is in the inner side of the lock are made based on the degree of rotation of door
The lock of the body mounted hinge and the door mounted hinge form a higher pair. Friction between these two objects should be less since those two form a rotating pairs. The material in which the lock to be made should have a self lubricating property. Otherwise steel should be coated with the self lubricating material like PTFE {Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) a synthetic fluropolymer of tetrafluoroethelyne that finds numerous applications. The best known brand name of PTFE is Teflon by DuPont Co} to reduce friction between the higher pairs. Those regions in the dual hinge which form a higher pair, it is better to coat those regions with material like PTFE which is having self lubricating properties to reduce friction during the rotation of the door mounted hinge inside the body mounted hinge. The part of the body mounted hinge which rest on the top surface of the door mounted hinge (locking arm) also forms a higher pair. So those regions of the contact between the door mounted hinge and the
body mounted hinge are also coated with the self lubricating materials like PTFE to reduce friction between them.
The advantage of using this dual side door hinge is that the door can be opened on either side of the door. Ergonomics is better in this system. Assembly of door to the body is easier and the time taken for the assembly is also less. A separate door latch system which is used in all vehicles is eliminated since lock for the door is integrated within the hinge. Door hinge and the door lock are integrated. Ergonomic wise the present invention is superior than the other prior art systems. It eliminates the need of door latch.
WE CLAIM:-
1. A dual side opening door hinge comprises of a door mounted and a body mounted hinge; the said body mounted hinge which is fitted to the body has a locking part, with pair of engaging teeth at distant on the external surface, able to revolve about the axis, mounted over a shaft held between a pair of mounting brackets, to be locked to the door mounted hinge; the said door mounted hinge consists a semicircular shape member having pivot at both ends rigidly held a by bracket, a pair locking arm, having curvature that of the said semicircular member with rounded free end provided with notch near to the said free end, pivoted to the said pivot of the door mounted hinge at both ends with a spring bias between the locking arm and the door mounted hinge so as to keep locking arms fully aligned to the said door mounted hinge so as the said teeth engaging to the said notch to prevent locking part release normally; a pair cable engaged to the said locking arms connected to the door opening handles, provided t at inside and outside to the door of vehicle, enabled to actuate for moving locking arm away from alignment, against spring bias, , for disengaging of locking tooth from the notch so as to release from the said locking part.
2. A dual side opening door hinge as claimed in claim 1 wherein the said locking part of body mounted a cylindrical shape with pair of said engaging teeth at distant formed on external surface and having internal diameter having partial segmental cut at opposite mounted over the said shaft having a pair of ribs at opposite to restrict the over rotation of the lock.
3. A dual side opening door hinge as claimed in claim 2 wherein the said locking part of body mounted provided with internal partial segmental cut to open the door preferably with a rotation through 70 degrees.
4. A dual side opening door hinge as claimed in claims 1 to 3 wherein the said locking arm consists of a base, identical to the shape of semicircular door hinge tip, provided with a single pivot to fit into the gap between pair of
pivots provided at the said hinge tip and a rounded and curved free end with notch facing to opposite lock arm.
5. A dual side opening door hinge as claimed in claims 1 to 4 wherein the said spring bias held between a pair of spring holder plate fixed to the said door hinge and locking arm.
6. A dual side opening door hinge as claimed in claim 5 wherein the said spring is tension spring.
7. A dual side opening door hinge as claimed in claims 1 to 6 wherein the said lock of the body mounted hinge and door mounted made of steel with coating of Poly-tetra fluoro ethylene (PTFE).
8. A dual side opening door hinge as claimed in claims 1 to 7 wherein the said inside and outside handles made of plate type with top pivoted the outer cable fixed to the inner handle and inner of cable fixed to the outer handle.
9. A dual side opening door hinge as claimed in claims 1 to 8 wherein the said free end of lock arm provided with inner wire of cable attaching slot.
