Abstract: 20 Case 153-5736 Abstract DYES IN SALT FORM A compound of formula I F-(R1-A+)m [R2-(R3-)n]p (I) in which F is the radical of a dyestuff or pigment molecule free of sulphonic acid groups; R1 is a direct bond or a bridging group; R2 is a C8-24 aliphatic group; preferably C8-24alkyl or C8-24alkenyl; R3 is a group of the formula -COO-, -SO3-, -PO3- or -PO2-; A+ is a group containing a sterically hindered ammonium or immonium group; m is 1, 2, 3 or 4; n is 1, 2 or 3; and p is 1, 2, 3, or 4 with the proviso that n x p = m.

1. A compound of formula I

in which
F is the radical of a dyestuff or pigment molecule free of sulphonic acid groups;
Ri is a direct bond or a bridging group;

A* is a group containing a sterically hindered ammonium or immonium group;

2. A compound according to claim 1 in which F is F' where F' is a radical derived from a dyestuff or pigment of the azo, anthraquinone, phthalocyanine, perylene, indigo, thioindigo, quinacridone, dioxazine, isoindoline, isoindolinone or diketopyrrolo-pyrrole series.
3. A compound according to claim 1 in which R1is R1' where R1' is a divalent


4. A compound according to claim 1 in which R2 is R2" where R2" is derived from
any fatty acid, oleic acid or a nionosulphonic acid, monophosphonic acid or
monophosphinic acid of a C8-24 aliphatic group.
5. A compound according to claim 1 in which A+^ is A+ where A+ is a group of
the formulae a) to e)

in which

one group R13 is selected from hydrogen, methyl and ethyl and the other group R13 is selected from hydrogen, methyl, ethyl and phenyl;

6. A compound according to claim 5 in which A+ is A+2 where A+2 is a group of
formula a)

where R11 and R12 are as defined in claim 5.
7. A process for the preparation of a compound of formula I comprising reacting
one mole of a compound of formula II

where A1 is a group containing a sterically hindered amine or imine group with a protonatable nitrogen atom,
with p moles of an acid of formula III

where the other symbols are as defined in claim 1.
8. A colored polymeric composition comprising

i) a polymeric material and
ii) 0.01 to 5% of a compound of formula I (based on the weight of polymeric material present) or precursors for forming a compound of formula I during the formation of the polymneric composition.
9. A process for coloring a substrate comprising applying a compound of formula
I according to claim 1 to that substrate.
10. A process according to claim 9 in which 0.01 to 5% of a compound of formula
I defined in claim 1 is applied to the substrate
11. A process according to claim 10 in which the substrate is a polyolefin.
12. A process for the prepration of a compound of formula I,
substantially at harait daseribad and illustratad with
examplas.
