[003] Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to communication receivers, and more specifically to recovering symbols when a receiver has a priori knowledge of some bits of a received data unit.

[005] Symbols are the basis for transmission of digital data in many communication systems. A symbol represents the basic unit which is used to modulate a carrier signal, with the resulting modulated signal being then further processed for transmission according to the pertinent communication technology. A symbol can contain one or more bits of data. ,CLAIMS:I/We Claim:
1. A receiver comprising:
a demodulator to generate an unmapped symbol encoded in a received signal according to a symbol constellation; and
a symbol de-mapper configured to:
determine whether a bit value constituting bits of the unmapped symbol is known a priori; and
if the bit value is known, to generate a de-mapped symbol representation for the unmapped symbol from a sub-region, wherein the sub-region is a constellation map of the symbol constellation constrained by the bit value.
