Electric Drive Automatic Gull Wing Door System For Pixy Smart Car

Abstract: An Electric Drive Automatic Gull-Wing Door System is developed, which is used in a Smart Car named PIXY. This special type of door works on electricity and receives commands from Smart Car Control System (SCCS) through Bluetooth short range wireless communication technology. Gull-wing doors are special type of automotive doors that are hinged at the top side of vehicle on the roof rather than left and right sides of the vehicle. The gull-wing doors open upwards. Conventional car doors are hinged at the side vertical pillars of the vehicle and the doors swing outward in a horizontal plane on the other hand gull-wing doors swing upward in vertical or in the both horizontal as well as in vertical planes. Gull-wing doors have also been used in aircraft and spacecraft designs. The design and architecture of gull-wing doors require little side-clearance to open and allow much better entrance/egress than conventional doors.

Gull-wing doors are special type of automotive doors that are hinged at the top side of vehicle on
the roof rather than left and right sides of the vehicle. The gull-wing doors open upwards.
Conventional car doors are hinged at the side vertical pillars of the vehicle and the doors swing
outward in a horizontal plane on the other hand gull-wing doors swing upward in vertical or in
the both horizontal as well as in vertical planes. Gull-wing doors have also been used in aircraft
and spacecraft designs. The design and architecture of gull-wing doors require little sideclearance
to open and allow much better entrance/egress than conventional doors.

technology. Figure 1 shows the parts of Electric Drive Automatic Gull-Wing Door System.

The Automatic Gull-wing door system is powered by the Gearbox with electric drive motor,
which is mounted on the roof of the vehicle as shown in figure 1. One end of metal arm having
end ball joint is connected with the outer gear (Drive gear) of the gearbox and another end is
connected with the gull-wing door. Gas spring is fixed to tolerate the heavy weight of the door as
shown in figure 1.
The Gearbox with electric drive motor is very important part of the system. Electric motor
delivers very high torque at 25 RPM at 12 Volt DG power supply. The gearbox reduces the
electric motor's 25 RPM with the ratio of 1:10. The drive gear delivers a very high torque
sufficient to swing the door at angular speed of 2.5 RPM. The components of the gearbox are
shown in the top view in figure 2.

Working of Electric Drive Automatic Gull-Wing Door System
Electric Drive Automatic Gull-Wing Door System receives the door open and door close
commands from a GUI based Smart Car Control System (SCCS) through Bluetooth short range
wireless communication technology. The Doors can also be operated through manual buttons.
The angle of door open and door close positions can be set through manual adjuster micro
switches. The gas spring attached to each door is used to tolerate the weight of doors. The door
open and close mechanism is explained in following figures. On pressing OPEN or CLOSE
button on SCCS, a command goes to Bluetooth enabled gearbox to drive the electric motor to
open or close the doors respectively. The electric motor of the gearbox rotates clockwise and anti
clockwise directions to rotate the drive gear at 2.5 RPM. The drive gear rotates clockwise and
anti clockwise directions with heavy torque to swing the doors in upward and downward
directions.
PRIOR ART AND PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED
The Gull Wing Doors existing in the market are either operated manually or works on hydraulic
system. The existing Gull Wing Doors does not have RFID system for the secure and automatic
operation of opening and closing of the doors and also does not have the facility to operate
remotely through Android smart phone or tablet. The Gull Wing Door which I developed is An
Electric Drive Automatic Gull-Wing Door System, which is being used in a Smart Car named
PIXY. This special type of automatic Gull-wing door system is powered by the Gearbox with
electric drive motor and receives the commands from RFID system to open and close the doors
automatically in a secure way. These doors can also be operated through Android smart phone or
tablet, in addition manual push buttons are also available. The design and architecture of these
doors require little side-clearance to open and allow much better entrance/egress than
conventional doors.

Claims:
1. I clainr that, Bluetooth enabled Gull Wing Doors can be operated automatically through
Android Smart Phone and manual push buttons.
2. I claim that, the inbuilt RFID system of frequency 13.56 MHz enables doors OPEN and
CLOSE through contact less RFID smart card.
3. I claim that, the Gear Box designed for Gull Wing Doors, reduces the electric motor's
RPM by the ratio of 10:1 in order to deliver high Torque and smooth operation of the
doors.
4. I claim that, single electric motor is used to operate both the doors simultaneously.
5. I claim that, two parallel gas springs are fitted in each door to tolerate the weight of the
door.
6. I claim that, a special bar type hinge which is mounted on the roof for each door is
designed and developed.
7. I claim that, LED lights and warning light-indicators which are fitted on each door glows
automatically while opening the door,
8. I claim that, a bilingual (English and Hindi) welcome message plays while opening the
doors.
9. I claim that, the tension of drive chain in the gear box is easily adjustable.
10.1 claim that, the angle of door open and door close positions can be set through manual
adjuster micro switches.
