Abstract: An electric vehicle drive system comprising: an electric vehicle power conversion device (11) an HB (2) that cuts off current that flows between a catenary line (50) and the electric vehicle power conversion device (11) and an EGS (4) that grounds the HB (2). Provided in the electric vehicle power conversion device (11) are: a smoothing circuit section (16) comprising a filter capacitor (16a) that receives and stores power supplied from the catenary line (50); an INV (12) that converts DC voltage from the smoothing circuit section (16) to AC voltage and drives an electric motor (7) which is the load; an LB (3) that cuts off a power supply path between the HB (2) and the INV (12); and a BCH circuit (14) that consumes surplus power that cannot be regenerated on the catenary line (50) side. The EGS (4) is configured as a triple pole single throw switch and when the opening/closing contact in the EGS (4) closes a brake resistor (15b) provided in the BCH circuit (14) is joined into an opening/closing contact section (5) in the EGS (4) so as to be electrically connected between the positive and negative electrodes in the filter capacitor (16a).
