Abstract: An electrically activated silver zinc primary battery having 38% to 42% KOH solution as electrolyte and a Gas Generator of 2400 cc working at 28V, 4 A DC.
This invention relates to electrically activated silver zinc primary battery.
The battery proposed herein is of primary reserve type i.e. all the cells are in the dry charged condition requiring only the addition of the electrolyte for activation. This is a single shot device, i.e. it can be used only once.
The electrically activated silver zinc primary battery, according to this invention, has 38% to 42% KOH solution as electrolyte and a Gas Generator of 2400 cc working at 28V, 4 A DC.
The system consists of Silver Oxide as Positive electrode and porous metallic zinc as the Negative electrode. The battery assembly as per Fig-1 consists of 53 Nos. of cells connected in series, stack housed in a plastic casing. All the plastic casings are connected to form a mono block. (2)
The electrolyte is a 38 % to 42% potassium hydroxide solution (KOH) for activating the battery contained within the battery in a rubber bladder kept in a metal housing. Two frangible Teflon diaphragms are assembled in one metallic housing arrangement. The same is assembled in Bladder housing Sub-assembly and connected to cell monoblock using suitable piping. The cell mono block & electrolyte housing are housed in an outer container (1 & 3) made of alloy steel with proper immobilization using epoxy and / or foaming compound. Battery is provided with electrolyte trap with absorbent material to absorb excess KOH and provided with a relief valve (33) set at a pressure of 4ksc (Nom.) to bleed the battery inside pressure.
The electrolyte housing is provided with a heater arrangement and thermostat to heat the electrolyte when the battery is stored / used at temperatures below + 18°C.
The battery contains a gas generator (4) of capacity 2400 cc which operates on providing a DC supply of 28 V, 4 Amps. When the gas generator is energized gas at high pressure gets released. This pressurizes the bladder & in turn pressurizes the electrolyte. The electrolyte under pressure pushes the diaphragm against knife & diaphragm gets punctured thus admitting the electrolyte to the cell mono block. The output wires from the battery are suitably terminated in hermetic connector fixed at the battery cover.
The battery box & cover (1 & 3) are tightened with screws and gasket to achieve hermeticity (leak proof enclosure).
