Abstract: 1. A breather system for an internal combustion engine comprising a breather chamber provided with a plurality of deflector ribs, said chamber receiving oil mist carried by the camshaft operating chain; a member forming an enclosure for sealing the said chamber, the ribs being opened at suitable locations to allow fumes to reach the top surface of the said chamber; a hole provided at the topmost point of the said chamber; and a tube whose one end is connected to the hole, with its other end connected to the air filter of the said engine, for enabling the suspended impurities in the fumes to be filtered off and the residual filtered air to be released to atmosphere.
This invention relates to a breather system for an internal combustion engine.
A breather system is normally provided in the engine gear box or crankcase to allow oil mixed fumes to escape to atmosphere or re-circulate in order to avoid pressure buildup in the gearbox or crankcase. Such pressure buildup is likely to result in failure of oil seals resulting in oil leakage.
The breather systems known to the art usually contain small openings in the gearbox, crankcase or in the cylinder head, at different locations, to allow the fumes to pass through.
The fumes are then carried through a tube which is open to to atmosphere.
For a scooter type vehicle with automatic transmission the breather cavity is provided in a cylinder head which necessitates a separate cylinder head cover with breather incorporated along with other elements such as gasket, cover, fasteners, among others. Apart from this the breather is located away from the air filter mounted on the engine requiring longer breather tubes for connection to the air filter.
It is therefore an object of this invention to propose a breather system for an internal combustion engine wherein the fumes are efficiently dealt with and have a reduced travel path thereby reducing the number of parts and simultaneously achieving cost reduction.
The breather system for an internal combustion engine, according to this invention, comprises a breather chamber provided with a plurality of deflector ribs, said chamber receiving oil mist carried by the camshaft operating chain; a member forming an enclosure for sealing the said chamber, the ribs being opened at suitable locations to allow fumes to reach the top surface of the said chamber; a hole provided at the topmost point of the said chamber; and a tube whose one end is connected to the hole, with its other end connected to the air filter of the said engine, for enabling the suspended impurities in the fumes to be filtered off and the residual filtered air to be released to atmosphere.
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example, and not by way of limitation one of possible embodiments of the breather proposed herein.
The breather chamber B is provided by the side of the crankshaft operating chamber E. The said chamber has a plurality of deflector ribs D. The deflector ribs D are inclined towards the bottom so as to facilitate the dripping of oil droplets. OnVy the fames are allowed to escape to the eitrnosphere through the opening provided on the ribs. The chamber B receives oil mist carried by the cam shaft operating chain C.
A member M forms an enclosure for sealing the said chamber B, The ribs D are open at locations to alfow fumes to reach the top surface T of the chamber B. A hole H is provided at the topmost point V of the said chamber. A Cube J has one end JI connected Co Che hole H with the other end J2 thereof connected to the air filter of the said engine. Consequently the oil fumes are not only efficiently dealt with, filtered and the residual filtered air sent to atmosphere but the travel path of the fumes from the point of generation to the point of exhaust of the filtered air is substantially reduced to result in overall economy of the said svstem.
It will be appreciated that various other embodiments of the breather system proposed herein aie possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention.
We Claim:
1. A breather system for an internal combustion engine comprising a breather chamber provided with a plurality of deflector ribs, said chamber receiving oil mist carried by the camshaft operating chain; a member forming an
enclosure for sealing the said chamber, the ribs being opened at suitable locations to allow fumes to reach the top surface of the said chamber; a hole provided at the topmost point of the said chamber; and a tube whose one end is connected to the hole, with its other end connected to the air filter of the said engine, for enabling the suspended impurities in the fumes to be filtered off and the residual filtered air to be released to atmosphere.
2. A breather system for an internal combustion engine substantially as herein described with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawings.
